CD players are driving me insane of late.

I had a Sony unit for about a year which was a lovely little CD/tape combo, but after a year the thing started randomly skipping CDs. I still have it as a cassette player (though I only own one cassette).

I then had a CD only unit made by Bush, but this only lasted about a month before developing the same problem. Back it went.

I then had a unit made by Phillips. It didn't skip, but the speakers vibrated like hell on certain kinds of music (usually softer/acoustic parts) and it forced a little pause in between each track making it an altogether useless unit for playing albums where the tracks are supposed to flow together like Ayreon's The Theory of Everything. Back it went.

My current and most recent disaster is a mini hi-fi unit made by Duronic. It arrived just this Friday and I played my copy of the new Iced Earth album on it three times without issue, but now it randomly can't seem to play CD's without catching (not skipping like the Sony and Bush machines, I'm talking all audio just completely cutting out). I can take the same CD out and put it back in again and then the machine will play fine, so it's a completely random issue. So back its going, again.

Can anyone recommend a CD player that is available on the UK market and is in the price range of up to £50 (approx). I don't require it to be a fancy digital radio or have any other features; it just needs to play CD's.

Dunno. I stick all my CDs into my computer and then run it through a late-90s Sony stereo. The speakers are like brick shithouses, so they don't vibrate. It's a 5 CD changer, which still works, but why bother when I can cue things up through media player. The tape decks don't work, but I got a Philips portable thing a few years back which will rip tapes and CD to MP3. Um, so you can probably ignore this entire post.LOL

I don't know what the UK market's like, but I have a 3-in-one combo vinyl-CD-cassette player from Crosley. It unfortunately can't plug into a home stereo system, but the speakers on it work pretty well as far as CD's go. The only downside is that it has a hard time reading burnt copies and the volume can only get so loud. It's lasted me a good several years though.

We get Crosley here. My Dad had one a while back but it was used when he got it and unfortunately it didn't last long.

^ From what you're describing I'm guessing  you're not looking for a stand alone CD player as part of a Hi-fi? If you are though have you considered 2nd hand like in the link below. Marantz make pretty good gear and you'd get more for you're money...

I don't like buying second hand electronic goods, for lack of guarantee on them. Buying new from either Amazon or Argos I've had a no questions asked easy and free return option for the last three disasters.

I'm beginning to think that they simply don't make these things like they used to.

I'm currently making do with my LG DVD player (which has been used far more for this than DVD's) which isn't bad but it does mean running two lots of electricity since I need the TV on for that to work. So it's not a permanent solution.

That also depends if you have a decent TV soundwise. Some TVs are crap.

This one isn't bad, actually. I've had terrible ones previously though.
