Hey, if there's one thing I love about music, it's the epic songs. Here, I'm drawing a line in the sand and saying anything above 13 minutes is an epic. Why 13 minutes? Really not sure, it just feels right to me and I think this thread should have some sort of "requirement" to be an epic. I mean, if you MUST add some 12 minute song I guess it's okay, but 13 is the mark at least for me. Also, I understand if you can't post them in order. I'm going to attempt that in a sec, but I know it's going to be hard. Oh, and of course, keep it metal!
Well...let me give this a shot: 8. Anesthetize - Porcupine Tree 7. Blacklake Nidstang - Agalloch 6. Crimson - Edge of Sanity 5. Chaining the Katechon - Deathspell Omega 4. Dark City Dead Man - Cult of Luna 3. Third Eye - Tool 2. The Mighty Masturbator - Devin Townsend 1. The Manifold Curiosity - Kayo Dot Okay...that list was WAAAAAAAAY too hard to make. Even after all that deliberating, I'm not sure if this is how I like it, but I'm pretty sure I would always use the 8 songs...just maybe a different order. Oh well, look forward to seeing some lists!

I used to love long epic tracks, but these days Im usually more interested in more compact complex tracks. There are of course exceptions. I cant think of a list right now but Id probably include some Deathspell Omega tracks even though Im sure most people would just call them long and not necessarily epic.

Nah, I can understand that. 'Tis why I like Cynic so much: sure their songs are short, but there's a lot of content for them. I don't think one feels repetitive. And I think Deathspell Omega is epic, at least.

1. Meshuggah - I. Hands down
2. BTBAM - Ants of the Sky 3. Moonsorrow - Jst Syntynyt / Varjojen Virta 4. BTBAM - White Walls 5. Dream Theater - Octavarium 6. Vektor - Accelerating Universe 7. Dream Theater - The Glass Prison 8. Blind Guardian - And Then There was Silence I didn't have a lot of "metal" epics compared to prog epics. I guess that's why my list is so proggy. Not like it's a bad thing |

Lost respect for these archives when I saw Creed added, among other bands. Not going to be foruming here anymore. You can keep my reviews if you want.

I'll come up with a list eventually, but I can tell you right now that The Dwelling by Sabbat is number one.

In no real order, here's the rest: #2 "In My Dungeon!" by Kataxu Symphonic black metal awesomeness that builds up to one EPIC outro! #3 "HeliO)))sophist" by Sunn O))) My favorite song by the band. #4 "The Garden" by Cathedral Why it took Cathedral so long to make something this amazing is beyond me. Numbers 5-8 are yet to be determined. |

I wouldn't know about a top 8, but as far as Metal epics go I would go with Dream Theater's "Octavarium" as my favourite, though that one is hardly metal at all. Anyway, I know more Prog Epics than Metal Epics (oh yeah, and for me to consider a song epic, it would have to be at least 15 min long, but that's just me).

13 minutes??? That's enough time for like 20 songs! Haha!
Can't think of any songs I know that take that long and that I like... Maybe Mastodon - Hearts Alive?

I'll name 7:
7. Naked City Leng Tch'e Hard to call this 'epic' so much as an overwhelming dirge. 31 minute drone doom classic that predates Earths genre making album by a year. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9MUIqYHzgk4 6. Orthrelm OV. Controversial choice, I know. People hate this album a lot. And rather then argue for it anymore, it's probably just best to let the whole 45 minutes speak for itself. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e2EGKt8yONI 5. Monolithe, Monolithe I. 52 minute funeral doom beast.Took me a while to get into, but it's well worth it. Their 50 minute sequel is also worth your time. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bVgom0T_tXo 4. Wyrd Heathen. 51 minute Pagan Black metal epic. There's a few flaws, but nowhere near fatal ones. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jh8fo6AhhQA Top Three are split for top spot. Edge of Sanity Crimson. People know about this one. No need to repeat the praise that's been said. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FRfXfB28c94 Sabbat The Melody of Death Mask. A classic black metal album that runs just under an hour in a single track. Epic is an understatement. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YLKWB5rofsg Ictus Imperivm. Politically direct death metal/metalcore (apparently) album of a single 39 minute track in spanish. Fantastic album, heard it 20 times through at least, and it doesn't get old. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tYim-vVdqFg |

I literally once had a list on RYM with more than 150 entries, but I deleted it one night cuz I'm a moron. I'll probably remake another one someday once my ban lifts up.
