Black metal all the way. It can sound pretty ridiculous too though, but that goes for most genres.

Addition of the word dark in poll title gives it to doom

Undoubtedly, it's doom. To be more precise, sludge-drone-doom, to my mind it's the most evil subgenre of all (i have recently made a poll on it). Bands like Moss, Unearthly Trance, Monarch cannot be beaten in this sense. And not black metal at all, the most evil black metal bands sound empty and ridicilous compared to the bands I have mentioned.

I'm going to have to give it to doom actually. Funeral doom acts like Esoteric, Catacombs, Evoken really do that dark atmosphere really well.
Bethlehem's Dark Metal album also helps. |

It depends, but generally black metal tends to be the most focused on being evil and scary as fuck.

doom,
black metal is definatly more focused on being dark and evil, but i think doom pulls off the whole dark evil atmosphere better.

Doom metal definitely. I'm not sure why people think black metal is "dark". Black Metal for the most part is just silly. Sorry but all the makeup and outfits aren't threatening, they look like a kid dressing up for halloween.

It's true that the panda masks come across as being very silly. I listened to a lot of black metal earlier this year - just to gain more insights nito the genre - and, I must say, that there is some really interesting stuff in that part of the metal universe. I don't know if I think it sounds evil, but it can definitely be very expressive.
But it all really depends what is meant by "evil". Death metal tends to have a sense of brutality to it that is unmatched even in grindcore I think, while doom metal tends to express depression and melancholia and similar emotions. I don't think that doom sounds evil, but it can definitely be very oppressive and dense, which I love, by the way. I don't know if black metal sounds evil, but many of the aesthetics that are embraced in black metal can definitely be, well, the only word I can think of is "unpleasant" (not in the sense that it is bad, but in the sense that it is dark, tense, and intense). |

I would say it is most positively undeniable definantly even. I would not recommend clicking on these if you dislike rather...... extreme cover art.... and for this one, a nice little story. And for some great extra bonus, read the lyrics on MA from the Ayagoyamugs cd. "On May 15, 2003, about 200 copies of the CD Avagoyamugs were seized by customs officers because of the extreme cover artwork and printed lyrics about child pornography and other illegal acts. The three members of the band were each fined $500 under the Customs Act in the Burnie Magistrates Court.
Byard was charged with importing a prohibited import, selling a prohibited import, advertising a prohibited import, and possessing a child abuse product, while Studley and Rice were both charged with importing a prohibited import, selling a prohibited import, and advertising a prohibited import. The three were convicted on all charges in the Burnie Magistrates Court, with Byard being fined a total of $2500, and Studley and Rice both being fined a total of $1250 each. Avagoyamugs was classified "Exceeding Level 3" by ARIA (the only such CD to date) and the seized CDs were destroyed." Edited by Sheavy - 14 Jun 2012 at 11:52am |

Oh yeah, there are lots of silly lyrics and artworks abound in extreme metal, and I must admit that I am generally not interested in that sort of stuff.

Your problem is that you're focused on what they're wearing and not what they're playing. Fucking dark. Of course, not all black metal bands' purpose is to sound dark.

I don't like it either. Just sayin' Brutal Death and Goregrind tend to go hand in hand in terms of brutality.
