Just curious if I can find some new gems by asking this...What band/artist are currently loving that is lesser-known?
In case you have some that are not totally metal, I'd be interested in that too. But I am primarily looking for some new metal to listen to. Thoughts? |

Hmmm...I can't say I really listen to any bands that are too obscure.
Maybe Canadian prog/power metal band Borealis? |

Recent thrash metal stuff I dig a lot:
Vektor. http://www.metalmusicarchives.com/vektor--outer-isolation.aspx I have a review there. 2 albums, the play tech speed back death thrash metal (!!), which basically means they blend the aforementioned extreme genres into Vektor thrash. Very precise playing, a very extreme voice (Schmier on steroids), very unique. Nekromantheon. Norwegian thrash metallers who worship 1983-86 Slayer and blend it with all the fine 80s dark and extreme thrash (which means it will include black - 80s - and deathrash stuff.) A simpler way to put it would be to say that they got inspired by bands like Aura Noir and the Fenriz-supported taste and did their own take on that, which in my view is better than both their inspirators. Loved it, my favorite this year. Try Rise, Vulcan Spectre, The Usurper Command from their latest or Divinity of Death from the album of same name. Deathhammer. Another Norwegian band, old school as well, this time less refined than Nekromantheon but oozing character. The vocals are particularly spectacular with banshee wails and extreme screaming.Speed, black thrash. Fullmoon Sorcery! Aggression: Tech thrash from Spain, which looks to the 88-92 era of technical thrash, incorporates influences from the funkier and groove oriented bands (and the latter includes Coroner btw), with great musicianship and songwriting. +1 to Psychotic Waltz, especially to the first two albums (emphasis on Into the Everflow, an all-time favorite). |

sounds good indeed, I'll have to look for them. As a band name, it sounds like a name for a punk band though.

Of the top of my head for something more obscure, Devoid of Grace (http://www.metalmusicarchives.com/devoid-of-grace.aspx). I had the urge to listen to their album Psychotic Journey this week, as it's quality, straight-up, no-BS death metal. Their album used to be available for free download on their site, but it appears their old site has been taken down.
