very honorable mentions

Sodom
Tankard
Pantera
Forbidden
Saxon
Yngwie Malmsteen
Obituary
Doro
Boulevard
Cinderella
Magnum
Dio
Black Sabbath
Death

and many others

you can mention others as well, especially in the hard rock/heavy/doom territory, even some thrash (I  might learn something new).

I actually thought twice before going on with the 90s because some subgenres will be left out as I listen to (very) little extreme metal bands/albums. So that's why they are not there.
Someone knowledgeable with these extreme genres should take care of that I guess.

So for the fun of it, vote and briefly (or not) explain your choice.

Wow even more of my favorites on this list. I thought I would have voted Psychotic Waltz, but then I saw Seasons in the Abyss, and I couldn´t help myself. Yes I admit it, I´m an incurable Slayer fanboy Embarrassed

Blind Guardian - Tales from the Twilight World but since it was not included (?!?)...guess I'll vote for Painkiller as a second choice.

Yet another nearly impossible poll. LOL

For me it's a big tie between Judas Priest, Slayer, Annihilator, Megadeth, and Anthrax.

I'm going to have to think about this one.

Hard not to vote Rust in Peace.   Runners-up Painkiller and Seasons in the Abyss.

Just had to vote for Anthrax, this poll was extremely difficult though.

Rust in Peace by far.

Has to be Rust in Peace. But there are so many classics on that list. Painkiller, never, Neverland, The American Way, Seasons in the Abyss, The Eye, Twisted into Form, Tales from the Twilight World, A Social Grace, Lights...Camera...Revolution, Coma of Souls, Persistence of Time, played to death the lot of them.

Fantastic albums not mentioned and further proof that we are still during metal's peak years. Making a top 20 of any of these years would be a REAL bitch.

Gamma Ray's debut is a fantastic record, a great shame that it gets overlooked so much.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EyyvsMC7vXc

Artillery - By Inheritance (one of the best metal albums ever recorded. Yes. That good)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U5nl4P4CUkI

Lethal - Programmed (if you like Queensryche this is a must. Incredible vocals)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ndifLvsHdYc

Bathory - Hammerheart. Really, really special stuff here:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LEuezn8lXqA

Vicious Rumors - Vicious Rumors
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DGbk1qj9EI4

Riot - Privilege of Power (GODLY)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tGwZ-bKT3YI

Realm - Suiciety
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U4zo0ZVftBw

Sanctuary - Into the Mirror Black
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i9fSLtNzRwQ

Atrophy - Violent by Nature (I prefer their debut but there are some amazing moments here, like the following song)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KAa6fSQ0ITo

Exhorder's classic: Slaughter in the Vatican
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RgLoFEU5mI8

Mekong Delta - Dances of Death (favorite MD album along with Music of Erich Zann)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O24PIlnfXvU

Ah, yes, tech-thrash was doing very well in 1990...
Obliveon - From this Day Forward
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rM4YYKVQUt0

Anacrusis - Reason (not their best but still great tech thrash, shame about the production, I urge everyone to look into Hindsight, the re-recordings of their first two albums)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ShCOCFxPDO0

Secrecy - Art in Motion
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m6rq8-7vNTI

Demolition Hammer - Tortured Existence (thrash classic, aka as deathrash by some)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2dqN9O2uSTs

Speaking of deathrash:
Sadus - Swallowed in Black
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iTTAkxnFDwQ

Aggressor - Neverending Destiny (GREAT deathrash)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pH7N4xkPqiA

Master - Master
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kJsT5XN82KU

Merciless - The Awakening
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WSopXxLi-Hk

tech-deathrash? Hellwitch!
Hellwitch - Syzygial Miscreancy
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qwO7K9Rk2gA

But of course 1990 was a great year for old school death metal (aka, the best death metal there is). Deicide and Death have been mentioned but this monumental piece has not:
Entombed - Left Hand Path
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D6exw6xT0oo

Then a couple of oddities that deserve a mention:

Warrior Soul - Last Decade Dead Century (since bands like FNM and King's X have been mentioned, I take the liberty to include this fantastic and extremely underrated band that never quite fit in any box: hard rock, punk, metal, alternative, all of the above)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GaDsh0IZ020

Similarly, Primus - Frizzle Fry
Mr Les Claypool. I love him and want to bear his children.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kU0WbFBMwzs

Alice in Chains - Facelift (GREAT album)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Opzq-hxYgfE

Grunge, schmunge though, I have to close with pure heavy metal to make a statement! :P
Leather Leone is a goddess. Chastain!
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Py030IPP06A

What a year...

Dream Theater - Images And Words

Sticking with the list, I guess i'd go with the Megadeth, though Extreme's album is up there in my favorite albums.

I won't vote yet, because there's actually a couple albums on there I'll be listening to during my current big four thrash run (Seasons in the Abyss needs a revisit, and I've never heard Persistence of Time.) Right now  it's probably between Painkiller and Never, Neverland, with the latter probably winning, but I won't vote just yet.

My bad, I thought this about 1990's albums, not the year 1990 itself.

I feel like an idiot now Ouch
