Symphony X from the selection. Not the best of these years for me though.

Best of 1996 for me would be Grave Digger - Tunes of War, followed by Kvist - For kunsten maa vi evig vike.

Other worthy 1996 albums for me:

Ancient Wisdom - For Snow Covered the Northland
Gorefest - Soul Survivor
Iced Earth - The Dark Saga
Opeth - Morningrise
Stratovarius - Episode

As for 1997, best for me would have to be Gamma Ray - Somewhere Out in Space, but a very honorable mention to Iced Earth - Days of Purgatory. Probably be #1, but they seem to consider it a comp. My favourite Iced Earth release though.

Others:

Borknagar - The Olden Domain
Foo Fighters - The Colour and the Shape
Iron Savior - Iron Savior
Stratovarius - Visions
Within Temptation - Enter

Stratovarius is more like a guilty pleasure for me so that's why they don't make the polls.

I rarely listen to prog-death Opeth, not being much into growls but they're always be in the worthy mentions list. The musicianship is great but I sometimes struggle with the growls. Embarrassed

I listened to Iced Earth a bit a few years ago, maybe I'll give them another chance.

Symphony X for me as well. Hard to say what my actual favorite from that year is, though from the poll I also like Therion, Helloween (one of my favorite of theirs with Deris, actually), Bruce Dickinson and Pain of Salvation, out of Adam's additional albums I like Grave Digger and Stratovarius (especially Visions), and I also have a few of my own honorable mentions:

In Flames - The Jester Race, Whoracle
Rage - Lingua Mortis
Rhapsody - Legendary Tales

"The Politics Of Ecstasy" for me. It´s one of my favorite Nevermore albums. Absolutely crushingly heavy, yet still melodic, and technically very well played/sung. Brilliant album to my ears...

you've just described perfectly the reason why I like Nevermore, I could not have said it better myself.

BTW, if you miss Nevermore, make sure you listen to Van Williams new band called Ghost Ship Octavius.

Voted Helloween, though I do have higher rated albums from these years.

Symphony X for me. I've got albums by most of those bands in my collection but surprisingly few from those years.

Also not on the list that I rate...

Pantera - The Great Southern Trendkill
Opeth - Morningrise and My Arms Your Hearse
Rush - Test for Echo
Soundgarden - Down on the Upside
The Gathering - Nightime Birds
