So what metal and hard rock albums have we got to look forward to in 2016?

For deffinite they'll be new albums from...

Megadeth
Blood Ceremony
Jess And The Ancient Ones

And possibly...

Metallica

Having a bit of a mental block at the moment so what else?

Just added this one to MMA actually.

Their last album proved to be quite a turning point for me in really getting to like death metal. Their line-up has largely changed since but I'm really excited for this one.

Avantasia. I really liked the last one too, so I'm hoping this delivers as well.

Anthrax
Purson

And hopefully Metallica, but who really knows when they'll finally put out a new album. LOL

I'll certainly check out that Obscura album.

I'd forgotten about the new Anthrax.

it could be late 2016 or early 2017 for metallica according to Kirk Hammett.

Forgot that Purson is working on a new album, that's also in my anticipated list.

Oh, I believe Artillery is working on a new album as well.

Really? Why the hell does it take them so damn long to put out albums now? Are they working with Axl Rose? If it's 2017, it'll be nine years since Death Magnetic. This is the same band which produced four of the cornerstones of thrash and an amazing covers EP inside five years in the 1980s. Now it seems to take them twice that time to produce something we all hope will be amazing, but will probably be disappointing. Again.

Right, rant over. Time for a cup of tea and something relaxing to listen to. Dayglo Abortions, I think.

Yeah I'm pretty hyped for that new Purson album too. Their last one has been one of my favourite non-metal albums. I loved the new single too.

New Borknagar:

Out January 22nd. Borknagar are one of those bands I don't listen to that often but I've enjoyed most of their albums a fair bit. The last one was definitely one of the stronger recent ones so I've got high hopes for this.

New Exmortus:

Out January 8th. I think the art of this and their last one are rather cheesy but I really enjoyed Slave to the Sword (2014), so this is quite high on my hype list.

^Yeah, both of those should be really good. I heard one song from Borknagar and it was awesome, and two songs from the Exmortus album and they were both about on par with their last album. I'm also looking forward to new Avantasia, though I'm a bit concerned by some of the guests. Also new Dream Theater, though The Astonishing is a truly awful name.

A few more I'm looking forward to, though they apply more to me than anyone else here I'm sure:

My most anticipated. I'm sure it'll be great.

Kinda nervous about this, but hopefully it's good.

Loved their last album, despite not liking them much before. This one has an interesting cover, at least.

I know, ridiculous isn't it. As I haven't been excited by a Metallica album this century yet I'm passed caring how long it takes. Death Magnetic was okay but inferior to so many other albums released at the time. They need to come back with a killer to regain a lot of the respect they've lost.

Record stores used to have midnight openings for Metallica album releases. I went to three- the two loads and Garage Inc. It doesn't happen any more. Well, there's no record stores any more I suppose!Big smile The last one I can recall for Metallica was St. Anger, and hardly anyone turned up. It didn't happen for Death Magnetic, and then the earthquake in 2010 knocked over all the record stores bar one.

Vektor.
Toxik (gotta be this year)
Dark Angel

Psychotic Waltz, also gotta be this year:
PW facebook, May 2nd: "Don't worry we are still working here..."

Also, a few days after Mike Clift died in an accident (the guy who did their artwork on the first two+plus demos and shirts) this was posted:

Quote Bittersweet reunion at the practice room tonight. This room is hallowed ground. Not only for the genius music created there, but for the lifelong friendships that were forged. These guys are my FAMILY. We go back 30+ years, have travelled the world, and still call SD home...well, except for Devon Graves who is following his path, teaching and making music in Austria. Much love to you, my friend. Psychotic Waltz OFFICIAL was my first foray into the music industry...how many people do you know, in this industry who are still the best of friends after all these years? I LOVE these guys. Tonight we gathered to remember our brother, Michael Clift, aka ‪#‎PirateMike‬, the 6th member of PW. There were beers, tears, and memories shared. But as Mike himself would want...the band played on...
The new tunes are DOPE, trust me...Actually got goosebumps listening. It was like it all came full circle. PW fans are going to be FUCKING STOKED on this new material. But for tonight, let us just remember our fallen brother, and send love, light, and prayers to his family and friends. Especially his daughter. We love you, Mike. We miss you, you will forever live on in our hearts, and on our walls, which are blessed to be adorned with your art

I personally am looking forward to the next Dream Theater album. I love the last 2 with Mangini Smile

Theocracy should have a new one out, they've been in the studio since this past summer. Original drummer has rejoined them (to make the album, not sure on being the permanent drummer)

Hopefully Wintersun - Time II will be out in 2016…

And come on, Seventh Wonder's new album should be out sometime, they only released a video of one of the new songs a year ago. Yeah, I know Tommy's been busy with Kamelot, but the darned album should be done.

I forgot about this.
Them is a new band featuring Symphony X's bassist and it's total King Diamond worship, basically sounds like a cross between King Diamond (Conspiracy era?) and Symphony X. They've released one song, which got me really excited, I lost count on how many KD trademarks they incorporated in here (plus that Halloween pre-chorus) but it's really good. Looking forward to it. Way better than Attic, Portrait and the rest.

Ooh! A new Myrath album is coming out early 2016.

They did a gofund thing to make a huge video, from what I'm hearing. A 30+ second clip up on youtube.

Lokking forward to the new Serenity too. Hopefully their original guitarist leaving last year won't be the death knell of the band, as he was the primary writer of the music.

So far the only 2016 releases I have are:

Serenity - Codex Atlanticus
Dream Theater - The Astonishing

I like the Serenity, the new guitar player does fine. The songwriting, for the most part, is fine. I do think that the symphonic/orchestra parts are taking over Serenity's sound too much though. They need to go back to that really huge, guitar-centric sound/production that Fallen Sanctuary & Death and Legacy both had. I'd give it a solid 3 stars, definitely worth picking up if you are a fan of Serenity, but it's not as good as their first 3 albums. Maybe better than their last album War of Ages, though.

The new Dream Theater…….excellent playing (as usual), really great production, you can even hear John Myung very clearly. Less metal/heavy rock, and much much more a progressive sound. I don't want to say it's a '70s prog rock sound, but it does have a bit of '70s prog feel to it, even if the music sounds more modern.

That said, I think it's an album I won't listen to much. It's just not keeping my interest for the most part. Disc 1 has 20 tracks, but many of them are interludes/segues into the next track, and not much 'song' going on. Even the few longer songs on disc 1 sometimes seem as they are cut off abruptly and on to the next track. Disc 1 is therefore more like 1 long song, split into 20 parts. Disc 2 is more song oriented, a few interludes, but mainly songs on the 14 tracks. Disc 2 keeps my interest a bit longer. I would bet that live, played front-to-back, complete with visuals, The Astonishing will be great in concert. As a complete album though, I'd give it 3.5 stars. Again, an album every Dream Theater fan should own. Casual DT listeners should maybe skip it though.

^ Don't think I'm going to buy this new Dream Theater album, bits I've heard just don't impress me and I've bought every one of them on release since the first album. There's just so many better bands out there doing prog metal and I rarely listen to DT albums these days much after the initial honeymoon period.

I got the new Myrath this past Friday, and it's excellent. It's not as guitar-heavy as 'Desert Call', it's much more in the vein of 'Tales Of The Sands', with more keyboards and middle-eastern symphonic elements. I think the songs are better on this new album 'Legacy' than they were on 'Tales Of The Sands'. Legacy has gotten several listens from me already, and I loved it from the outset Smile

I'm really digging the newest Avantasia album, Ghostlights. There's more shred and metal in it than the last few releases, while keeping the same basic style. Good Stuff Smile

So far for 2016, I have:

Amon Amarth - Jomsviking
Anthrax - For All Kings
Avantasia - Ghostlights
Beyond The Black - Lost In Forever
Circus Maximus - Havoc
Dream Theater - The Astonishing
Eternity's End - The Fire Within
Headspace - All That You Fear Is Gone
Megadeth - Dystopia
Myrath - Legacy
Redemption - The Art Of Loss
Serenity - Codex Atlanticus

There's quite a few planned/rumoured releases this year that got me excited.

Testament I believe are going to release a new one this year.
There's the possibility of a new Solution .45 as well, they mentioned in an interview that they had material for two albums for last years Nightmares In The Waking State - Part 1 but didnt want to release a double album so they were holding on to the rest of the material. Its just hints but I really hope it means we get a new one later this year.
Winterhorde have mentioned that the new album is already recorded and that they are looking for a label or distributor or something. But then, this wouldnt be the first time they promise to release new material...
Judicator have announced that the new album, The Last Emperor will be released this year. Considering that their last album is one of my top albums of last year, I'm fairly hyped for this one.
Lascaille's Shroud, as Adam already mentioned, is out this year. Pretty excited for that one as well.
The new Chthe'ilist album, Le Dernier Crépuscule is already out and is a strong contender for a spot on the Top 2016 releases.
Avantasia's Ghostlights has gotten a few spins already, pretty solid stuff much like their last release before it.

And finally (for now at least), Gorillaz are supposed to release a new album this year. This is possibly the album that I am most excited for this year.

Bayley's current bassist who recorded on this album is one of my best mates. Use to play in a band with him back in 2009 and we've been friends ever since.

I hate him now though (professional jealously) coz he tours all over the world with Bayley and his backing band Absolva.

As for my contribution to this thread... there's plenty of bands I love that have or will release an album this year.

But there's only one that I'm genuinely pumped for, more than any other...

A new Testament album would be very welcome, the last 2 in particular have been excellent!

Leif Edling is one of the most consistent and generally awesome musicians in metal, with a big number of awesome releases with Candlemass, Krux and Avatarium. Now, there's a new project coming along, called Doomsday Kingdom and I am very excited about it because it features one of my favourite vocalists right now from one of my favourite bands, Niklas Stalvind from Wolf.

Speaking of Leif Edling, arent Candlemass scheduled for a new release?
After hearing their cover of Entombed's To Ride, Shoot Straight And Speak The Truth I'm quite excited to hear more from their current vocalist.

Finally got my Beyond The Black - Lost In Forever cd in the post. It had to be shipped from overseas so I waited a couple of weeks for it.

Excellent album, even better than their debut album from last year, imo.

I was a bit worried about it, since the musicians are different on this album. On the debut it was just hired guns, with Sascha Paeth, the producer, on lead guitar (he produces Kamelot and a couple other bands as well).

Now, there is a real, permanent band behind Jennifer Habin. And they sound pretty good on this new album. The songs are even better, not sure if that has to do with the band members or not.

Definitely check it out if you like Evanescence, Delain, and similar bands.

another disappointment for me came from Witchcraft; I found their new album Nucleus uninteresting, even dull.

^ Some of the shorter songs were pretty good but the 2 longer ones, particularly Breakdown dragged and went nowhere.

This one as well. Been waiting since 2010 for these guys to release a new album.

The Jelly Jam will release their 4th album, entitled Profit, in May. For those who don't know, Jelly Jam is Ty Tabor (King's X), John Myung (DT) and Rod Morgenstein (Dixie Dregs, Winger).
Glad to see they're back. Sure, their music is not very different from King's X, but it's very enjoyable (at least for me).

Woohoo!

As far as I'm concerned, 2016 for metal can be summed up by this:

Damn, Amazon are informing me the vinyl version wont be out until April 15th now. I suspect it's more a case of Rise Above records aren't letting them have any until then as some places seem to have shipped it already.

Dropping in May:

I had a promo already though. Big smile Some pretty epic sounding stuff here. Basically tech death meets prog meets symphonic black metal.

I hate it when release dates suddenly get pushed back especially when you know other places are shipping it already. That happened with the first Saille album. I think the UK release date for that got knocked back about three times before the distributor allowed it to be sold.

That Enthean album sounds cool.

I was giving it a blast in the car until the damn MP3 player I bought a few days ago gave up on the first day of using it. Angry

I ordered that Eternity's End cd based on the review on the MMA front page, plus going to youtube and checking out a couple of songs.

Some excellent power metal from a bunch of death metal guys. Who woulda thunk it?

ARGH! Still the video is not available where I am. It's driving me nuts, most people have commented that it's a great song that reminds them of the Corbin (aka GODLY) years. I don't expect anything like Distant Thunder or Nosferatu but if it's as good as Trinity of Heresy, I'll be very happy.

Yeah and they already released a track, called Iron Maiden. Which is very appropriate since it is a Flotsified version of The Trooper. It's actually pretty great!

You need to listen to No Place for Disgrace ASAP. There is no consensus on which of the first two is the greatest album but there is an overwhelming agreement that both fucking RULE.

It's just a pity that copies of the original No Place for Disgrace are getting hard to find because of that 2014 re-recording.

Been listening to 'Gygax - Critical Hits' lately. Pretty good heavy rock album, came out in January, and they aren't on the MMA site yet.

Upon further research, the singer was in the now-defunct hard rock band Gypsyhawk. Both bands have a similar style.
