Which genre list would people like to see next? Based on my own comfort zone's I'm thinking maybe folk metal (which doesn't seem to get much love around here to me), but I don't mind tackling something else if preferred. Or maybe another collab would like to make another one? We don't have any of the following yet:

Alternative
Avant-Garde
Doom
Folk
Glam
Gothic
Groove
Sludge
Symphonic
Hard Rock
Hardcore/Crust

This is the longest challenge yet. It's also more of a personal one though. I've been building it on and off since I started with these lists and finished it today.

This is my CD collection, up to date as of today. For that obvious reason I will not fill this one in myself, as my score would obviously be 100%.

Note that the criteria is different on this list, I'm asking how many we have in common, as in you also physically own it (though not necessarily on CD).

^ I own 179 from your collection Adam. Quite a lot I guess when you consider the amount of albums out there. A few bands like Running Wild that you have a lot of, I have nothing by them so that lowered the score somewhat.

Running Wild has become one of my favourite bands in quite a relatively short time but most of those albums were bloody difficult to find at a reasonable price.

^ I can imagine. amazing how many albums there are out there that are out of print and every so often they get a re-release in a small quantity.

Posted By: adg211288
Date Posted: 12 Jun 2016 at 10:36am
Even more amazing how many that are considered classics aren't on the market right now. Running Wild's Black Hand Inn being one of them. I was lucky there, it only took me about a year to find it. A Facebook friend who was a member of Heavy Metal Haven recently posted a picture of his copy and I learned it's taken him 12 years to find a decently priced copy.

That's a beast of a list Adam.

This may sound strange, but I'm not sure I can accurately go through it. I have so much music in my house and a lot of it is boxed up due to lack of space to display it all (in fact even more is packed up right now because of the decorating we've just started) that I honestly sometimes find an album that I forget we even had in the house (my collection as saved on RYM is most definitely not complete - and I have almost 1000 CDs alone catalogued there!).

I'll have a go later all the same, but may have to keep coming back to that one!

I've been thinking I may have fun putting a list together. Out of the remaining genres, I could do either symphonic or gothic if you're fine with that.

I have a wants list that'll never be fulfilled as I'm adding faster than I buy sometimes and quite a few on there are albums that are unavailable and I'm holding out for a copy at a sensible price. some have been on there ages.

It would drive me mad not being able to display all my collection. Can understand though once it gets to a certain size. I'm a way off hitting the 1000 mark yet.

Of the two I'm more knowledgeable about symphonic but I've no objection if you want to take it on. I'm sure we know a lot of the same albums actually.

I'm the same. I actually have two CD wishlists on Amazon. One for the ones I really want and one for the ones I'd like but am holding on for a bargain price on. The former seems to always get stuff added to it more often though.

Okay, I'm going to do Symphonic first, since it should be easy to get 100 albums for that in no time. I'll do Gothic as well at some point, though that one may need to reuse some bands multiple times to get the full 100.

Went through Adam's collection.

I scored an unexpectedly high 481 (75%)! I knew Adam and I had similar taste, but I wasn't expecting that many in common. Maybe I buy too much music.

Only got 9% (60) on that one. I've heard a lot of those, but only own 60 of the many I know.

Okay, I already ran into some problems with the list challenge site. Right now, I tried using our site logo as the list image, like Adam has done for his lists, but it's saying it's not big enough, so how do I make it work? Also, is it possible to rearrange the list order after I add albums in, or should I just add everything in alphabetically?

ps: Making lists on RYM is so much easier than this.

Download this one, it's the exact one I use so should work:

As for order, there is a Sort A - Z tool near the top of the page you make a list on.

Thanks. I actually just figured out how to rearrange it myself: Just drag the albums you want to move. I still prefer RYM, though, simply because I've used its list making system so many times now. I needed to know about that, because I want to get all the more popular bands out of the way first so I know exactly how many slots I have to add in more obscure bands.

Yeah, I suspect my love of obscure symphonic metal will keep my score on top. Also, this confirms that when I eventually do the gothic list, I'll need to repeat a few bands, because if I was struggling a bit to fill out a symphonic list, gothic will only be much tougher. Though in retrospect, I would have had no problem at all if I had included symphonic power metal albums, but I felt that would have been cheating, so for example, that explains the Amberian Dawn and Nightwish albums I picked.

Posted By: Unitron
Date Posted: 12 Jun 2016 at 6:18pm
Only got 5% on symphonic, I don't listen to a whole lot of symphonic metal. I really like Epica and Tarja, but the albums you picked for them are ones I've never heard. LOL

169. I love looking through other people's collections! There's huge gaps I consider it essential to be filled, and a lot of other stuff I wouldn't touch with a shitty stick! Dunno if I could do mine. Last time I updated it, over a year ago, it was about three times the size of that and has grown considerably since. And there's lots of stuff I'd be embarrassed to show off.

I just shoved everything on mine so long as I still owned it. There's a fair bit of stuff on there that is from my early years discovering music that I no longer listen to. There's even one on there that I have never listened to (unwanted present).

Folk metal has never seemed to get much love around here, so I'm not shocked by the low scores people are getting.

Mind you, making the list made me realise there's a lot of well regarded bands/albums I haven't even heard yet (And also how much work the sub-genre needs Embarrassed).

I got 59/100, and I purposely left out Limp Bizkit. After all, we don't want to scare people away do we? LOL

Got 11. Wasn't expecting much though there were a couple of artists I do know that weren't there (Breed 77, Stone Sour) and one represented by an album I haven't heard (A Pale Horse Named Death).

Yeah, I also realized that I missed another quite popular band, Staind. I was just trawling through the alternative metal band list on the site and picking random ones along with albums I already knew.

I'm pretty sure some of the lists I've made have the odd major omission too. I wouldn't worry about it too much. Just save them for part 2 (I do actually have a black metal part 2 in the works already, as well as 2016 so far part 2).

Still to do the test, but would it not have been easier to do a search on the top 100 rated albums on MMA rather than randomly trying to select? Sounds a hard way to do it.

For the record, I'd have included LB. They may be shite but they sell a shed more discs than most bands do.

True, going through the top-rated would be a lot easier, maybe I'll do that next time I make a list.

18/100 on groove metal.

2/100 on symphonic. Didn't expect to do well on this one but there's another 10 or so bands that I have albums of in my collection, just not the ones on the list.

3/100 on folk. Not surprised really.

15/100 on alternative.

I'll be honest guys I use RYM as a secondary source to make my lists and then just add anything missing from MMA before publishing. Good way to find missing bands too. For example (for folk):

https://rateyourmusic.com/customchart?page=1&chart_type=top&type=album&year=alltime&genre_include=1&include_child_genres=1&genres=folk+metal&include_child_genres_chk=1&include=both&origin_countries=&limit=none&countries=

This is my CD collection, up to date as of today. For that obvious reason I will not fill this one in myself, as my score would obviously be 100%.

Note that the criteria is different on this list, I'm asking how many we have in common, as in you also physically own it (though not necessarily on CD).

Just a note here that new lists are in production, albeit slowly. There will be a second 2016 list at some point once enough albums are added (it's about 25% of the way there so far). I expect the next major genre list put up will be for doom metal.

Is this all based on a physical collection or does it include digital too?

Digital too. My younger brother gets a little obsessive about some bands, even ones he doesn't really know, and he gives me a shitload of stuff.

Okay, here's a list of my music collection. I did leave out some of the Classical music I have, as I couldn't find the proper images.

158. Great collection, very diverse. I think you can tell a lot about a metal fan by the non-metal music they have. There's some surprises there, and gaps which I would have considered essentials to be filled, but each to his own!

I've got a handful of classical stuff, some of which I didn't put on my list either, because I couldn't find images, but it's something I'd like to explore further.

Thanks, I've noticed very few metal-heads listen exclusively to metal. Most seem to at least enjoy classic rock and punk as well. While most of it is metal, I do enjoy a wide-range of music. I think the only genres of music that I don't like at all are Pop and Avant-Garde (The genre, I like stuff that is avant-garde). Even Country, which I usually hate, I don't mind some Johnny Cash from time to time.

What did you find surprising and gaps to be filled? I already know I'm missing some classic Morbid Angel, Napalm Death, Nasum, Black Flag, Broken Bones, and Nuclear Assault, but extreme metal and hardcore punk isn't easy to find for decent prices around here. Wink

I was just thinking about being a bit of a completist myself, like getting hold of all the Iron Maiden, Judas Priest and Big Four albums.Smile

And if you can handle Johnny Cash, have you tried Rebel Meets Rebel? It's Pantera minus Phil, with a bloke called David Allen Coe on vocals:

And David Allen Coe himself (he did two underground albums of dirty songs, one of which is now considered racist. It's not this one):

And of course, Kevin Bloody Wilson (a lot of bad language...):

I know a bit about country if you want some serious, non-boring suggestions too.

It's been a while now since I last released a List Challenge but obviously in case anyone missed them there was:

Collabs Top 2016 albums:

http://www.listchallenges.com/metal-music-archives-collaborators-top-albums2016" rel="nofollow - http://www.listchallenges.com/metal-music-archives-collaborators-top-albums2016

And an update to my personal collection list, which itself is almost 50 CDs out of date already, but won't be re-posted a third time until I hit at least 800.

Coming soon:

2017 in Metal (so far), to be published at the end of June featuring albums from the first half of the year.

Doom Metal, coming as soon as I finish it, since this genre hasn't been done yet.

24% for me on doom. There's a lot of bands on there that I've heard/own different albums other than the ones on the list though.

I must have missed the top 100 of 2016 before - on that I scored 48.
