As a companion to my death metal poll, here is a black metal version.
I didn't actually know about a couple of these options but they were mentioned on the MMA pages so I thought I'd list them. I also included a few notable hybrids.
And yes the Black Metal option itself means the basic, traditional form of the genre as started in Norway. Not so called first wave black metal than could mean anything.
Mine is atmospheric black metal.

Not really sure i have a favorite but avant-garde BM bands like Deathspell Omega and Dodheimsgard seem to be near the top of my list so i'll just go with AG since it covers a lot of unknown territory

Industrial Black Metal is my favorite. Next I'd say black-thrash metal or melodic black metal.

Atmospheric followed by AG for me (two very different styles)

Atmospheric in general for me. Cosmic BM is actually a specific variation of that, which I'm a big fan of though, so I'm kinda tempted to put my vote there instead.
I enjoy most forms of black metal, but there are a few I haven't really explored too much, such as depressive BM or industrial BM.

I recommend starting with Samael or Dodheimsgard. Samael's Passage would probably be the best start as it combines industrial and symphonic.

In the absence of crust black metal, I went with progressive black metal. ;-)

Very rarely do I listen to black metal, but if i do, it is Ved Buens Ende, which is said to be post black metal, or avant garde if you like.

I like the black metal stuff made by Mories de Jong a lot - De Magia Veterum and Cloak of Altering. It's technically avant black but quite unique and I don't really like other avant black bands except for A Forest of Stars which is "kinda" avant. I like some post-black like Fen, but most of the movement leaves me cold. So, hell if I know!

I had to draw the line on the options somewhere, but yes, that probably should have been there...
Okay you caught me, I forgot another one. I should have just added an Other option it seems.

Post-black metal would be atmospheric black metal, not avant-garde.

It seems like you can actually vote more than once on this poll so I voted for both normal black metal and atmospheric black metal.

I actually thought that option was a to let people change their vote rather than vote on more than one.

Went for progressive black metal in the end - most of the other contenders for my favourite (atmospheric, psychdelic, avant-garde etc.) tend to bleed into progressive black metal so it seemed like the common factor.

So where would you factor in old shit, like Bathory (first four albums)?

(Epic) atmospheric black metal (Summoniiiiiing!), followed by Viking metal

I would imagine that would be good old fashioned tagless black metal

This is sort of confusing since there's so much overlap. What would qualify as black speed? Some of these aren't even on rym

I'm pretty sure by Black/speed Ashley means blackened speed metal.

You're right though, there is a lot of overlap here. Some of these options could in fact mean the same thing.
As Adam said a few posts back, Cosmic Black Metal is just atmospheric black metal. It just as a spacey theme to it which may include space ambient elements, but at the end of the day it's still atmospheric black metal. So is blackgaze really, though it's at the lightest end of that spectrum. To be honest a lot of Black/Sludge would also fit as atmospheric black metal as most such bands draw on post-sludge.
So called War Metal is a black/death hybrid so is basically the same as voting for Black/Death as it's written here. I'm presuming that like with Black/speed metal the black/death metal option means blackened death metal though. Of course none of those sounds are really types of black metal, but other genres influenced by black metal.
I'm not convinced on this black 'n' roll option though. The only bands I have heard called that are Kvelertak and Vreid. Kvelertak isn't even considered to be (primarily) a black metal act by most accounts, whereas Vreid is definitely melodic black metal. At the very least, it's not a developed style like death 'n' roll is.

Being no expert on BM I'm struggling a bit with the large choice of subs but I guess it would be straight BM or prog BM.

I'd recommend anyone who is interested in but struggles with black metal to try out the melodic black metal bands. They tend to be more riff driven and with better production than other types.

I forgot, I'm male. I only have about a 16 colour palette, so black metal it is! Erm, and I voted for it four times. Not trying to skew the survey, it just kept giving me the option...

I thought that option being turned on would allow people to change their mind, rather than keep voting over and over.
Serious fault in the system, that. I shan't be using it again whenever I next make a poll.

Black metal is one area of metal that my wife and I differ greatly on. I don't dislike it as such but I've never been as into it as Nicole. In fact Nicole often finds various black metal bands that I just don't know what to make of. Came in from work recently and she was listening to a band called Todesstoß and my reaction was literally 'what the fuck is this?'
I do quite like some of the atmospheric black metal acts though, so I voted for that.

That Todesstoß is some dark stuff though. New territory for me even. I recommend it though.

Yeah I was surprised by that album too as I don't usually go in for the depressive black metal stuff (though I've found two decent dsbm albums this year so far as it happens).
Their previous release is also pretty good but very different. Much more avant-garde.
