In what area?
Rhythm Guitar - Hetfield Lead Guitar - Mustaine Vocals - Hetfield Songwriting ability - I'll give it to Mustaine since he wrote most of Megadeth's stuff single-handed. Personality - Not too big on either one. Better frontman - Hetfield Better band - Hetfield
I can't think of anything else now, but I'm gonna go with Hetfield.

It's a tough one. First instinct would be to go with Hetfield on the basis that I've listened to Metallica a lot longer than Megadeth and know their albums better. That said from what I know of Megadeth they have the stronger discography. Yet I prefer Hetfield's voice even though I thought his vocals were rather bad on Death Magnetic.
I really cannot call this one. It's a tie from me I'm afraid.

How could anyone vote Hetfield above anyone? Mustaine FTW!
------------- Lost respect for these archives when I saw Creed added, among other bands. Not going to be foruming here anymore. You can keep my reviews if you want.

Because I like him more. Seattle '89 is proof enough, though I prefer him pretty much all around. Mustaine has written some good material as well and is at least a technically admirable guitarist, but when I saw Megadeth live last summer his voice was in an absolutely horrendous condition. Hetfield isn't at his best either, but he's not that bad.

I like God.
So Hetfield is the only logical choice.

Sorry man. Maybe I'm being a bit vague.
Who do you prefer overall?

Okay, I guess that if I have to pick one I'd have to go for Hetfield, but that's only because my knowledge of Megadeth is a bit lacking outside of the three albums I've got. My answer might be completely different once I've heard a few more Megadeth albums.

I like Mustaine more as a whole, even though I prefer Metallica over Megadeth.

James Hetfield by miles.
I'm a huge fan of Megadeth, and Dave Mustaine is still an awesome guitarist etc, but there's mainly two reasons why I don't like him much:
1. The whole Metallica rivalry. He got kicked out of a band and it took him 25 years to get over it. On the Some Kind of Monster scene he's all like 'Do you know how hard it was for me?' etc whinging and whining... seriously, fucking man up. There are thousands, possibly millions of bands who would kill for a quarter of the success Megadeth has had, and he could never get over being kicked out of Metallica. And at the end of the day, he only had himself to blame for it.
2. He did a signing at a music event a few years ago for Marshall amps, I waitied about 2 hours, and to be honest he just seemed like a dick. It's understandable, that maybe he was just having a shit day, or obviously it's hard to keep smiling and stay motivated for such a long time, but either way when you've waited so long to get a few seconds with one of your heroes, you just don't really expect them to be so miserable.
Also, James Hetfield is basically God. The guy seems awesome in pretty much any video or picture you see of him, and has tonnes more character and charisma.
Both bands kick ass, but definitely going with Hetfield on this one.

As a guitarist, Mustaine by miles (though over time I've come to realize James is surprisingly good, and probably the most musically gifted in the band).
As a vocalist, James is obviously better. Oh and this doesn't have anything to do with the music but personality wise...only the most hardcore of fanboys can't admit that Mustaine is an ass of epic proportions. I love him but good lord man!

Dave Mustaine
well, Hetfield was better than Dave in the 80s, both as a singer and songwriter. But in the 90s and 00s, Dave is the winner, did a much better work than Hetfield, especially as a songwriter. Hetfield's vocals deteriorated after Load, his vocal performances got worse and worse and his songwriting isn't that great anymore (see Reload, such a patchy, uneven album and St Anger was pretty bad). People say Death Magnetic was great but both Endgame and The System Has Failed are just better IMO.

I posted this five years ago (wow, time flies) and my opinion has changed. Actually neither of these two impress me these days. Dave's vocals have got bad as well, even worse than Hetfield's. Supercollider was just as bad as St Anger. I've grown to like Load/Reload more so I wouldn't be so harsh on 90s Metallica. I still think Death Magnetic is rather uninspired, terrible drumming and the production was poor (which I never understood how can the most famous metal band out there have such crappy sound on an album).

Well Hetfield is a better singer by far - both good guitarists but Metallica haven't released a great album for 24 years. In that time Megadeth have released a few. Mustaine wasn't a particularly endearing character in his past but he seems to have improved with age. Overall though I'd give Hetfield the vote.

Mustaine's the better guitarist, Hetfield the better singer and songwriter. Both have idiotic religious beliefs, which didn't used to bother me, but seems to now I'm older.

James Hetfield was the ultimate thrash metal vocalist in his day, and his latter day vocals aren´t the worst either, although I prefer his aggressive vocal style on the early releases. Mustaine is distinct sounding, but often sounds almost painfully strained. I like him, but he is not a favorite.
