Subject: The metal double albums poll
Date Posted: 19 Aug 2016 at 12:34pm
I've been trying to think up a different idea for a poll and this is what I decided on. Actually I've found very few double albums to list in this; I guess they must not be as common as I thought. Of course I'm going to allow an Other option because I'm sure someone knows one I failed to find out about. Remember though that this is for metal only.
It should be noted that I'm defining double album here based on CD standard, not vinyl. No live albums or compilations either and only one release per artist to avoid filling up this poll with Ayreon and Esoteric.
And yes I do know that Symphony X's Iconoclast was released as a single CD as well, but the band always said the double was the real album, so I included it. The single CD version is an abridged cut.

Symphony X get my vote followed by Iron Maiden.

Into the Electric Castle has long been my favourite album of all time so it's its pretty obvious where my vote goes.
I've heard a few of the others here too:
Iron Maiden
Spectral Lore
Dream Theater
Lascaille's Shroud
Virgin Steele
Symphony X
Judas Priest
Midnight Odyssey
Helloween (this one would actually fit on a single CD, not sure why its a double)
Metallica/Lou reed (I wonder if anyone will vote for this?)
I know that some find long albums too much to take in, but I personally enjoy a well done double album. The Lascaille's Shroud album listed here is still my #1 for this year.

The Priest for me, although the Symphony X and Iron Maiden albums are great as well.

I voted for Dream Theater, though Ayreon and Symphony X aren't far off, and the Iron Maiden album is awesome as well. lol at Lulu being included!

I was clutching at straws at what to include.

Went for Dream Theater. Though if you'd have included Molly Hatchet Double Trouble Live ...

Yes. I do genuinely like it, and don't understand why it is quite so hated.

Nostradamus definitely. It's something pretty unique from a band I adore.

Double albums rarely thrill me but there are some great ones here. I'm shocked at myself by i think the Iron Maiden album has proved more listens than the others. Esoteric is a once in a while type of album and The Ocean is a close second

hard to choose between Symphony X and Ayreon.
sorry for complaining but it's not Metallica & Lou Reed, it's the other way around. Big difference I say because it's a Lou Reed album with Metallica as a back up band (saw the cd in stores back in 2011, literally gathering dust, it said Lou Reed & Metallica).

You're not complaining, you're being nit-picky.
Yes, it's a Lou Reed album.
It's also a Metallica album.
That's why its considered a collaboration album.
This is a metal site, so I listed Metallica first. Big deal.

I wasn't criticizing you so don't take it personally.
It is a big deal since most ideas from Lulu came from Reed so it's more a Lou Reed album than a Metallica album. Just wanted to make people aware of that. That's all.

Well I still say you're nit-picking.
If this thread was about the one album specfically then fair play to call me out over it but it's one option on a poll with 15 other albums. It's not unclear what album is being referred to by calling it Metallica and Lou Reed rather than Lou Reed and Metallica. It's still the same release. Again, not a big deal...or at least it wasn't until you made it into one.

I did not mean to upset you, you shouldn't have anyway.

On my CD shelf I file it next to Metallica, cos I'd never find it if I stuck it in L for Lou or R for Reed, so as far I'm concerned, you got it the right way round.

it's not about filing it... oh wait, did you buy the album? does it make a good beer coaster?

Yes, I bought it, the day it was released. In case you didn't read the whole thread, I said I LIKE IT!

One of my favorite double albums comes from this progressive metal band called Hourglass. The album is called Oblivious to the Obvious and was released in 2009.

Yeah, I've heard that Hourglass album and it's pretty awesome.

I honestly don't know which to pick, though it's been Iron Maiden, Ayreon and Spectral Lore.

I went with Ayreon. Arjen Lucassen is the king of the double album.
