SLudgiest sludge thread of all time right here. I was also wondering if this genre would every gain some extensive popularity in the mainstream. Like Mastodon has expeirenced

The style of music definitely has some mainstream potential like Mastodon has received.  I can't wait until their next album as it should be a big one for them (in terms of sales or more exposure).  I remember hearing some of Leviathan when it came out years back and I didn't like it.  I didn't give the band any real attention again until this year, and they are now among my favorite modern metal bands.  I've got Crack the Skye, Blood Mountain, and even Leviathan.  It's definitely worth checking out bands after a few years in between listens since you never know when your tastes change. Smile

^ you must have Remission, if too be called a man you got to own Remission or else... you will be Trumpled Under Hoove ;)

oh and their 5th album will be epic, and probably thier least metal, since it will be about AIR and air is not heavy

It's certainly possibly Sludge will gain a wider popularity especially with the avenue it's walking down, considering a lot of post bands seem to fly under the same banner.

For me Sludge is a bit of love hate relationship, I love small pockets with an apathetic outlook on the whole (maybe being a little harsh). Through a several year sabbatical where I negated metal music almost entirely I was continually spinning my Corrupted discs, who funnily enough, were quite popular within my circle of music friends (most of who don't care metal)

Guys, could you give a listen to this band? I'm not a sludge specialist so I'd like to hear opinions from people more familiar with the genre.

For me, it's quite interesting and well played sludge/doom with post and progressive leanings.

Baroness and Black Tusk are pretty good too, if you like Mastodon. They have some similar aesthetics but go about music in different ways...

Y'all should check out Rorcal's Heliogabalus. 70 minutes of heavy as heavy can get sludge. Great stuff.

I've been listening to sludge/post-metal like crazy lately! Primarily High On Fire, but others as well! I love Mastodon of course, but am also gaining a liking for other bands as well...Baroness has a nice melodic sound to it(surprising for sludge!), and I'm checking out one of the godfathers of sludge, the Melvins.

^I´ve listened to a lot of Melvins in recent years and saw them live too a couple of years ago. I really enjoy them a lot. I started with "A Senile Animal" and I still think it´s a great release. You should check out "Here Comes the Waterworks" by Big Business too. The two guys from that band now also play in Melvins and that album is really great.

Sludge is next on the genres I want to start properly exploring, having largely ignored it for a long time. I've been listening to a lot of Kylesa today and I'm enjoying them quite a bit. Obviously I already know the older Mastodon stuff and some of Cult of Luna's work and a few bands that blend it with black metal. I've heard a little bit of Melvins but so far they haven't actually done much for me.

I'm looking for recommendations in the genre, preferably regular sludge for now opposed to atmospheric sludge. I may end up liking the latter more but I want to put myself through a crash course in the regular stuff first if you know what I mean.

Nice to see someone else getting into Kylesa, love them! Thumbs Up

Crowbar is my first recommendation to anyone looking to get into actual sludge metal, one of my favorite bands and probably the best live show I've ever been to. You can't go wrong with any of their albums, they're all amazing.

Since you like Mastodon, I think you'd probably enjoy Baroness and Bison B.C.

Superjoint Ritual, Obake, Floor, Cavity, Lord By Fire, and Brothers of the Sonic Cloth are all amazing too.
