I need to get with it. Only 2017 release I've picked up so far is the new Pain Of Salvation.

Though I've listened to the new Aeternam album on youtube (I need to buy that one...love Aeternam).

Some good stuff I'm stoked about picking up when they come out, the Seven Kingdoms, Helion Prime, MindMaze, Wintersun, and a few others.

Pain Of Salvation - In The Passing Light Of Day
Witherfall - Nocturnes And Requiems

This is actually already out but so badly handled that unless you're in the same country as them you'll probably be paying an arm and a leg if you want to get a copy.

I'm in the UK and had planned to order the CD at first opportunity but didn't when I worked out what it would cost:

CD = $20 (approx £16) - over the standard for a new release to begin with.
Shipping = $15 (approx £12) - I know that the US charges the Earth for international postage so I guess I can understand.
Import fees = about £10. The UK does not allow the import of any goods from the US over the value of £15 without paying an import fee. I found this out the hard way when I got the last Lascaille's Shroud album. Most would probably mark the package as a Gift even though it's not because that puts the import cost threshold a bit higher, but LS actually did this for me but the UK authorities still charged me. So it obviously doesn't work all the time.

Which means the total cost for a UK buyer for a single CD album would be around the £38 mark.

Which of course is completely ridiculous.

Seven Kingdoms decided to cut their label (Nightmare Records) out of the picture and go full DIY. Obviously the label was taking too big a cut for them because they said it was because they wanted to be in a more financially feasible position for worldwide touring.

For me though this has completely backfired because they've made the album pretty much unattainable without paying stupid money. As much as I love the band, I won't be paying the same money I could get about four other albums with for just their one. They haven't even put it on streaming sites so anyone can hear it in full beforehand even if they were considering dropping that sort of money on it.

Fen are getting upset by this one for the top place on my 2017 list. Still picking my jaw up off the floor here. I thought that of all prog albums Ayreon may have a shot of taking it but these guys just beat Arjen to it.

And just like that, MindMaze have pushed this down to second.

One more 2017 review and then I'll have done my first 20 for the year.

I didn't think it was possible, but I believe something did beat Overkill's new album as AOTY.

What a punishing album. This is the most raw and aggressive albums I've heard in a long time, fellow thrash fans should all check this out if they want a pure old-school shred-fest. It's rare a new band blows my mind as much as Power Trip have!

I've been far too busy to listen to new music or do anything for that matter but i have been able to hear the new Pain Of Salvation. Shocked you're giving it only a 1 star. I quite like it myself. Not comparable to the classics but certainly an interesting listen for me. At least a 3.5 for me :)

^ Black metal albums I think you'd like (you probably have a few on your list to hear already though). Not counting anything that isn't out yet.

Fen - Winter
Saille - Gnosis (all bar one track is on Spotify now)
Lorn - Arrayed Claws
Wiegedood - De Doden Hebben Het Goed II
Pure Wrath - Ascetic Eventide
Fell Ruin - To the Concrete Drifts (black/doom)
Imperceptum - The Eternal Path to Nothingness  (black/doom)

I haven't really listened to much from other genres that either isn't out yet or already on your list, but Ex Deo's new one is a solid symphonic death metal release.

We're taking our time Chris. The priority has been on getting up to speed on the set ready for gigs so haven't done a lot yet. Don't even have a full album of songs yet. They're likely to be completed song by song I suspect but we have some great stuff written. It's likely to be heavier than anything the band have done before based on what we have so far.

I only have five 2017 albums so far (ordered the Helion Prime but for some reason it hasn't shipped to me...haven't gotten charged until it does).

I have the Pain Of Salvation, Witherfall, MindMaze, Pyramaze, and Seven Kingdoms. I like all of them, but the MindMaze is my favorite so far. Killer album, MindMaze certainly topped their 2014's Back From The Edge.

I have listened to very few 2017 albums, compared to new albums the previous years. Just don´t have as much time to review new releases these days. Thankfully I have a shitload of backlog reviews, so I won´t dry out any time soon. At least not when it comes to old releases.

I passed 40 reviews for 2017 albums recently, but my total heard is over 100. I need to catch up on actually writing about a few more of them.

Top album is currently oltreLuna by Progenie Terrestre Pura.

Off the top of my head I think the only 2017 releases I've heard have been Overkill and Body Count. (I like them both just fine, for whatever that's worth.)
I will have to look closer at the other bands/albums mentioned in this thread to see what else is out there that might be up my alley...

I am really enjoying the new Accept disc... I think it may be their best since Blood Of The Nations

Immolation - Atonement (pretty good but too hooky for Immolation)
Fen - Winter (listened a little bit, not ready to form an opinion)
Dying Fetus - Wrong One to Fuck With (good shit, kicks ass)
Cormorant - Diaspora (again, not ready to form an opinion but I love what these guys did in the past)
Cloak of Altering - I Reached For The Light That Drowned In Your Mouth (great)

That's it when it comes to metal, I listen to a lot of non-metal stuff lately, hence the laughable list.

EDIT: Ah, I forgot about Elder - Reflections of a Floating World! Awesome stoner doom with a prog edge to it, recommended.

EDIT2: Ah, and Pallbearer - Heartless. Pretty good, not crazy about it.

EDIT3: Ah, and of course the new Mastodon - Waste of Time. Yeah, a waste of time.

EDIT4: Fuck me if I didn't listen to the new Havok album - Conformicide. Preatty kick ass thrash metal album, but when it comes to the new wave thrash, Vektor still rules.

Stormspell Records was nice enough to send me digital sneak peeks of their Fall 2017 releases, so I've got a bunch of new stuff to plow thru for my blog:

Blazon Stone - Down in the Dark
Fire Strike - Slaves of Fate
Numenor - Chronicles
Yuri Fulone - Your Kingdom Will Fall
Stereo Nasty - Twisting the Blade
Palantir - Lost Between Dimensions

2017 albums I've enjoyed so far are:

Immolation - Atonement
Iced Earth - Incorruptible

and that's about it! I really can't think of anyone else, either because I haven't checked out that many 2017 releases or I just have an incredibly bad memory.

I have a question regarding Soen & Avatarium.

I just picked up the newest Soen cd, and there was a sticker on it saying 'ex-members of Opeth, Amon Amarth, and Avatarium'.

Now, I know that Martin Lopez played in both Opeth and Amon Amarth. Marcus Jidell is the guy from Avatarium...is he now an "ex-member" of Avatarium?!?! I certainly hope not.

He's not left Avatarium. It's probably just a badly worded sticker.

I have got to keep up more with Symphonic metal.

I just found out about two very cool bands. Scardust, from Israel, released a full-length album in August (mp3 only Cry ) and their couple of videos from their 2015 ep on youtube, they sound excellent, and not your typical symphonic metal.

Then I discovered a band out of Boston called Seven Spires, they also released an album in August. The gal singing has a killer set of pipes, and they also have a quite unusual sound to them, based on the couple of videos I've watched.

Both bands aren't weird by any means, but they do go above and beyond the typical Nightwish-type style you hear from so many symphonic metal bands with female singers.

Good first impressions here, even RYM seems to like this one.

I feel like her dark folk side is more prominent here so it's actually even less of a pure metal album than M was, but it works for me. There are some stronger doom metal elements too, especially in the track Funeral which features Chelsea Wolfe.

I just got the Seven Spires - Solveig album, holy Toledo, that's a very good album

I think my top 3 albums of 2017 so far are Threshold - Legends Of The Shires, MindMaze - Resolve, and that Seven Spires - Solveig.

The new Iced Earth is great too, best album with Stu. And the Unleash The Archers is great.

We're in the last quarter of the year now and I have to say I think it's been a very good one so far!

I try to be more reserved with giving out five star ratings than I used to be, but I've had no less than nine albums this year where I couldn't justify anything less (and did try to in some cases). Quite a few 4.5's as well. Of course this is only counting reviewed albums. I've been reviewing steadily this year but not done as many as some years and have been picking and choosing mostly the albums I feel most positive about, especially those I'm purchased for myself. Promo reviewing interests me little these days. I currently stand at 58 2017 reviews. I think I'm going to try to aim for at least 70 before the year is out.

It's also been a funny year for someone who keeps saying how burned out he is on prog metal, with three albums in my top 5 being prog albums.

Anyhow, here's how my current top 10 stands, a couple of them actually being very recent reviews:

http://www.metalmusicarchives.com/album/progenie-terrestre-pura/oltreluna

I can't see this one being unseated from my number one spot now. These guys incorporate many unusual elements into their black metal sound and it still blows me away every time I stick it on.

This one is the only one of these I don't physically own, mostly because it's a self-released CD and the postage is excessive to the UK. I still say it's better than Terminal Redux though. Tongue

http://www.metalmusicarchives.com/album/fen/winter

http://www.metalmusicarchives.com/album/iced-earth/incorruptible

The only 4.5 review here. There's a few other 4.5's that could get swapped into this position yet though, so long as a 10th 5.0 doesn't appear that is.

One last note while I'm here, I will opening MMA's best of year list for everyone to take part in this year - not just site collaborators - so if you're a regular in this thread start thinking of your lists and watch for a submission thread come the year's end.

Is it going to be set up the same as last year, where everyone's top album gets a mention if it doesn't make the list? Also, I think it would be a good idea to let people have a MR recommendation outside of the main list if anyone has one.

There are likely to be a few tweaks to the normal rules to be decided closer to the time. I'm considering allowing MR in the main list but not Non-Metal. Mostly because last year disallowing MR nearly screwed the entirely result when albums that were in Metal subs or even Hard Rock were voted into the top 100 then got moved to MR after the event or even during the result compile.

Though I would also like to avoid another 2013 situation where people felt the winning album was barely relevant to be on a metal site's top album list.

One change that may happen this year is a scoring overall that rewards people's top album more points.

That's why I'm suggesting having where someone could give a single MR recommendation outside of the main list similar to what was done in 2014. That way an MR/Non-metal album doesn't get in the top of the year albums, but gets a little attention.

I'm not that attached to if MR is included or not, just a suggestion I had for if there is anyone who wants some attention given to an MR album. (There is one non-metal album that I really enjoyed, it has a good amount of hard rock, but not enough for the new rules.)

I know it may compilcate matters but maybe MR could be allowed if the artist has previously released metal albums? It felt a bit wrong last year to bar Opeth from the vote. Only disallow them if the artist is solely here as MR/Non-Metal.

I just went to youtube and listened to that Madrost posted above ^^.

Not bad at all, very thrashy & progressive, but it didn't quite catch my attention like the Vektor album did. Still, I might have to pick it up one of these days. Thanks for the post mentioning it

Definitely looking like 2017 belongs to doom metal based on the current 2017 chart on RYM. I need to give that Ruins of Beverast album some more listens. Spectral Voice review is lined up next.

Nice list Ashley, there's a few there I still want to check out.

That Lovebites album may be about to dethrone oltreLune on my 2017 list. Been writing a review on and off for a day or two now, piecing bits together, listening to it over and over. I thought it was going to settle on a 4.5, but then I cracked up the volume for my current listen which has sealed the deal on a 5.0.

It's a really good one. Surprised me completely considering the Japanese all female scene has a bit of a reputation for being influenced by j-pop.

^ Which they kind of look like they're going to be playing from the promo pictures (I even googled all girl j-pop groups to make sure I wouldn't out of line pointing this out in my upcoming review and lo and behold their picture came up). In a way though that gives the album all the more impact when you realise that they're pretty far removed from everything else that's come before them in that growing scene.

I'm on 154 total heard with 73 reviewed. Had 80 reviewed for last year, but a handful of those have come after the event, so I'm expecting this to be my best year in a while if I can keep the pace up, since 2015 was the year of the burnout. It's probably past the time I add unreviewed 2016 releases into my main list to be honest: I have a few unranked that I've actually got the CD of even.

Here is a preliminary list of nonprog albums from my records at ProgFreak.  Not all metal and doesn't include the prog metal albums, but when I tried delineating by "metal" it listed all of my albums from 2017.

I don't know why the formula won't sort out only the metal albums.  ???  I would like to have included prog metal albums too.
