Subject: Greatest Metal Epics!
Date Posted: 21 Feb 2011 at 1:07am
I am really into the epics of metal - those tracks that are 10 minutes or more full of many killer riffs and lead breaks. I kind of collect them so I hope this thread introduces me to some new ones.
Let's go for the obvious here first
perhaps my fave Maiden ever
and this classic that still gives me the chills, incredible blast of riffs and a gargantuan drumming sound, with those powerful vocals!
and this amazing epic
and of course the mega blasts of prog excess here! Listen to the whole thing!

For sure. One of the first metal epics I think I heard, and I still have yet to hear one to top it. It's not immediately diverse, but it's probably Meshuggah's most musically experimental work yet (besides that noise at the end of Elastic).

Crimson by Edge of Sanity! Best death metal epic ever, IMO. Also Octavarium, Six Degrees, and the Perfect Element.

I generally think epics are longer than like 15 minutes, but I think this is a classic that qualifies.

Man . . .
One of my fave subjects and I have made many a Epic Prog/Metal and Epic Thrash/Death Metal
compilations CD's from my own CD Collection.
Glad to see DT, Meshuggah, Opeth, Psychotic Waltz, Haken, Zero Hour, Anubis Gate, Maiden, Riverside, Ayreon and Edge of Insanity made it here . And the awesome "Hourglass", that is an
obscure fave at prOgulus . "Аркона" was pretty amazing too. I'll have to give the others a listen .
DT's Epic "Six Degrees Inner Turbulence" has always been a fave, the Overture reminds me of a
Stage Play Intro if it were done ala' Prog Metal (Even Portnoy plays in a "style" that a Drummer would
in such an Orchestra for the Stage).
Heres a few of mine:
Sabbat (U.K.):
I would have gone with a Studio Version but I guess all have been taken
off YOUtube . But this is by far the best live version from the RARE
VHS Concert live at the wall in East Berlin "The Beginning of the End".
(Checkout the prolific Lyrics by Martin Walkyier:
http://www.darklyrics.com/lyrics/sabbatuk/dreamweaverreflectionofouryesterday.html#5" rel="nofollow - http://www.darklyrics.com/lyrics/sabbatuk/dreamweaverreflectionofouryesterday.html#5 )
Believer:
I The Lie
Unfortunately, they omitted the "Intro" which is very Cinematic, but here are
the 2 other parts as well:
II the Truth

III the Key
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Lt5C8DIMQ4o" rel="nofollow - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Lt5C8DIMQ4o
Fates Warning -The Ivory Gate of Dreams
I Innocence
I Cold Daze
II Daylight Dreamers
III Quietus
IV Ivory Tower
V Whispers on the Wind
VI Acquiescence
VII Retrospect
This is simply one of the all time greats, every emotion is just amazing .
Dream Theater - A Mind beside Itself:
I. Erotomania
II. Voices
III. The Silent Man
Realm - Suiciety
Emperor - Prometheus: I The Eruption
See Parts!
Extol - Undecieved
Thought Industry - The Chalice Vermillion
Thought Industry - Bearing an Hourglass
Opeth - April Ethereal
(Yeah right! Opeth isnt a Death Metal band , there are a few Epics
on this album that may have been forgotten or not heard by many out
there this is 1998 folks).
Vox Tempus - Revelations
Got many more to come . . .
Extree note:
I wanted to bring this up at PA long ago -
My Theory of what constitutes as an Epic is not so-much the length, but what goes into a song/musical
piece. My prime example of this is Steve Hackett's - Brand New:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hoGGLtDJLp0&playnext=1&list=PLBD984F6BCB645FF6" rel="nofollow - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hoGGLtDJLp0&playnext=1&list=PLBD984F6BCB645FF6
(I'd rather had the studio version) Its only 5:22 but the content of music is staggering!
Same could go for a band like Spiral Architect:
More after a few of you out there add some!

How about the Symphony X epics? Divine Wings and the Odyssey are both fairly awesome.

I'm a HUGE Magnum fan, even though I have this particular Album on LP, I was VERY disappointed with this release (and "Vigilante"), it didnt have the Power of its predecessor a few years before "On a Storytellers Night", and the songs became Pop oriented (even though OaSTN has 1 or 2 "danceable" tunes, they're better written) and lost its "Prog Metal" edge. They went from a sort-of harder-edged Kansas, to a Pop Saga, but Saga did it better . Their latest album seems to be going back to a Proggier sound. . . . I do need to go back to "Wings of Heaven" though and take another listen, its been years!
I tried to find the studio version of "Sacred Hour" but they only have this Live version that stays close to the original. Its another example of a 5+ minute song that sounds EPIC :
FW's "Epitaph" is my Fave track on Spectre Within .
And, as Hevy Devy says . . . "Recycle, Recycle!!!"

I personally have not listened to Wings of Heaven as a whole, but I know this song from a Magnum compilation album. Personally, I like this kind AOR similar to Foreigner. I am just starting to discover this band.

In that case . . .
I EMPLORE you to checkout their most powerful 3 albums (imo), and their fans will agree:
1. Chase the Dragon
2. The 11th Hour (and what a thought provoking Album cover by master Fantasy Artist Rodney Matthews).
3. On a Storytellers Night Excellent Prog Metal with an AOR touch .
Also listen to "Princess Alice and the Broken Arrow", not as hard edged as the above 3, but pleasantly still
"Prog". I guess I missed out on their next one, their latest, "In the Valley of the Moonking" . . .
I better go check it out!
And they are working on yet another called "The Visitation":

"DT! STOP MAKING EPIC SONGS!" (just kidding folks ). They do amazing short songs
too, some great "unreleased" stuff as well (Bonus Tracks etc.).
. . . a fave track.
DT damned if they do (anything!), Damned if they dont (and unfortunately goes triple if
Portnoy does anything ).
Okay, how about another Epic?

Not even. I got banned because I decide to mimic Anal Cunt and made an album with ridiculous offensive song titles, that were obviously tongue-in-cheek, but they offended the mods and removed the album from the RYM database and banned me until October because apparently the Terms and Services, as vague as they are, still apply to my musical projects.
