As March is slowly approaching, it's time to reflect upon what has happened so far in 2011. For me this has been an AMAZING year so far. I've already heard two 5-star albums and a couple 4.5's as well. That's incredible considering that it's only February and I'm conservative when it comes to ratings.
What are some of your favorite albums so far this year? Metal or non-metal is allowed in your list.

I'm always too slow with each year, as I've only heard/own 1 2011 album . I've got to make a point to keep looking. I was thinking of going through the 2011 new releases section on MMA to check some things I'm not familiar with.

^Definitely, I got it a day ago and I've already listened to it three times!! As for mine:
Appearance
of Nothing- All Gods Are Gone The Project Hate MCMXCIX - Bleeding The New Apocalypse (Cum Victriciis In Manibus Armis) Beardfish- Mammoth (non- metal) Images of Eden- Rebuilding the Ruins Shroud of Despondency - Dark Meditations in Monastic Seclusion
Fen right now is at a 4.5 rating, but it will probably go up by the time I review it.

Absolute masterpiece IMO! The only way that album won't make my list is if five more 5-star albums roll around before year's end... which would be awesome as well.

Haven't come out. And I haven't gotten Mammoth by Beardfish or Varjoina Kuljemme Kuolleiden Maasa by Moonsorrow

Honestly, I didn't like it. They went from amazing with Hazards of Love to ehh with The King is Dead. It's mainly just prog-related (barely) country pop. I would borrow it from someone rather than buying it.

Besides Fen, I've only heard one 2011 album: Grails "Deep Politics" It's fantastic, not metal, but very dark psych/post-rock that might appeal to dark ambient metal fans (such as Fen )
The band was discovered by Michael Gira (Swans) by the way!

Well here's what I got so far. Heard 12 2011 albums so far, but I'll cut out the entries that I got as promos but didn't appeal to me personally, and anything lowers than 3*
Wolfchant - Call of the Black Winds
Saille - Irreversible Decay
Fen - Epoch
Abysmal Dawn - Leveling The Plane Of Existence
Falkenbach - Tiurida
Evergrey - Glorious Collision

I'm finally hearing a few releases I'm anticipating, but still nothing that strikes me as a 5 star album (yet). I'm better prepared for my list this year since I'm starting it earlier. Every album I listen to in it's entirety goes on a list, and I'll shift the rankings as new ones impress me or old ones grow or fade on me. Last year I wasn't too concerned with it until October/November.

I just received Artistic Differences by Slaves to Fashion in the mail recently, and it's some really good prog metal, though kind of cliched. Also Mamiffer's Mare Decendrii is very good. It's kind of like Tangerine Dream when it gets mad.

As for now I've fallen in love with "Epoch" (FEN) - it seems that everybody loves it - and "All we Destroy" (GRAYCEON). In the near future I want to check new Dead Eyed Sleeper(The first one is quite interesting) album and I'm curious about Septic Flesh "The Great Mass".

I personally like it a lot more. I felt CdC, and even Monuments was altogether very similar sounding, and relied far too much on variations of a few 6/8 style riffs. The Collective branches out far more IMO.

As usual...I am not good with the new music upkeep (I can barely handle my current collection!) but there a few albums I look forward to for this year.
Symph X's Opeth's (which I am hoping is a bit different)
Sometime hopefully Aghora's next album will come out. According to the bassist (whos a real cool and responsive guy) they just need a new vocalist. This was like 2 years ago
I did pick up Vintersorg's latest album, and have yet to give it a proper listen.

So far:
Sabbatrinity by Sabbat
Parasignosis by Mitochondrion
Omnivium by Obscura
Elysium by Stratovarius
Jordpuls by Vintersorg
777 - Sect(s) by Blut Aus Nord
and (non-metal) 226: Stationary If All Statistics Are Invariant Under a Shift in Time by Bull of Heaven
So far, none of them got five stars from me, but Parasignosis is probably the closest. Maybe, I'll tip it over the edge whenever I get the actual CD.

Oh Kim I was trying to pretend myself into thinking it didn't happen! Worse than I thought...."living hardcore radical!"
And what's with the plain chord riff alternated with "scratching"? Has MA been out of the game so long they don't realize nu metal has died!? Now, I'm not a big fan of death metal but I do see how fans of the band, (especially being one of the genre's pioneers) would be pissed. I almost want to say this is satiric!

I kind of hope so, because it really makes no sense. I've youtubed a few more songs and they do seem like, pretty poor, death metal mixed with disturbed. So "Radikult" is a real odd one.

That list gives me stress. I havent listened to nearly enough 2011 releases yet. I reveiw most of the things I listen to, so that explains the slow tempo in listening to new releases.

I'm actually fairly pleased with how that list looks right now, a lot of my 2011 5* ratings are up there (although my absolute top is down in #32 )
Personally though I'd rather filter that list so inclusions need a minimum of five ratings, just to keep albums with only 2 ratings trumping ones with 18: http://www.metalmusicarchives.com/TopAlbums.aspx?lstReleaseTypes=1&lstYears=2011&MinNRatings=5&MinAVGRatings=0.5&MaxResults=100#list" rel="nofollow - http://www.metalmusicarchives.com/TopAlbums.aspx?lstReleaseTypes=1&lstYears=2011&MinNRatings=5&MinAVGRatings=0.5&MaxResults=100#list
This has the downside of reducing the list to just 31 albums, and includes the latest Morbid Angel album with its 1.77* average

I though that I've listened to a lot of 2011 releases, but looking at the results so far I can see there's still much more to listen to.

Gah! How could I forget about Devy!?
My bro picked up Deconstruction/Ghost and before even hearing, I assume they will be brilliant as always. Also I believe this completes his 4 album "project" of finding himself as the new Devin Townsend... Can't wait to hear em!

Yeah, that list ain't too in line with my tastes, but wasn't expecting it to be. Thought something like the new Krallice (they appear to have gotten good coverage on the net) would be in there, then looked at their band page not one rating.
A bit too liberal on the stars, but I guess it will level out over time.
Anyway a rather short list: De Magia Veterum - The Divine Antithesis Servile sect - Realms of the queen Meth Drinker - Meth Drinker '12 Antediluvian - Revelations in Excrement
Not sure what to think about Pulling Teeth's Funerary yet (only listened to it twice), the title tracks brilliant, but need to let the rest seep in before divulging too far into a vaguely concrete opinion.
New Ash Borer and Fell Voice are pretty strong if you like atmospheric BM with post-rock influences, tho' a little dirtier than something like Fen.
Stuff I need to listen to more: Hades Archer - For the Diabolical Ages Negative Plane - Stained Glass Revelations http://rateyourmusic.com/artist/lantern_f1" rel="nofollow - et cetera (I'm slowly losing impetus to write...)
Need to get the new Virus.
And a whole slew of disappointments.

To those who know my tastes (Colin, Brian), what new albums would you recommend me? I've only heard Unexpect, Fen, Grayceon, Virus and Liturgy this year.

I've heard quite a few 2011 albums (at least 20), but I'm not sure if any of them would crack my top 5 if they came out last year. There's still 6 months, and quite a few releases I'm anticipating, so that is certain to change for me. Plus some of the albums I have heard could grow on me by the end of the year.

2011 has been great for me so far. 66 albums heard so far (61 of those reviewed so far), and I've already got three times as many 5* albums from 2011 than I had for 2010.

You've obviously not been listening to much metalcore then Adam

Oh yes, my infamous 1.63 average metalcore ratings. What can I say, I think I've only heard two metalcore albums that have stood the test of time with me.

It is probably worth noting in regard to metalcore and myself that I have actually only rated 8 releases, so maybe I just didn't encounter the best stuff. This said, looking through the newly added releases on the sub page I don't see anything that even slightly catches my attention, although I do actually have The Defiled's Grave Times because Metal Hammer gave it away for free, but I only listened to one track from it and then shelved it.

I'm shocked that my average rating for metalcore is so high. But then I remember that most of those are BTBAM fanboy reviews and I don't write much anyway.

My year started out good, but I haven't gotten many albums in the past couple of months, besides Septicflesh's "The Great Mass", that have gotten close to even a 4 star rating. But, there's still the new DT and Opeth albums to look forward too.

http://www.metalmusicarchives.com/hell--human-remains.aspx" rel="nofollow - Hell - Human Remains
http://www.metalmusicarchives.com/saille--irreversible-decay.aspx" rel="nofollow - Saille - Irreversible Decay <- certainly worth 5* to me from a neutral PoV, but it drops a few places on this list because this is my personal top albums, and I guess I'm just not into black metal enough to want to place it higher than Cruachan, Turisas and Hell.
