While Heaven Wept are known for a lot of melancholic songs, particularly on their debut: http://www.metalmusicarchives.com/artist/while-heaven-wept" rel="nofollow - http://www.metalmusicarchives.com/artist/while-heaven-wept

A lot of Opeth's stuff has a melancholic vibe like The Moor on Still Life or Porcelain Heart on Watershed. In fact their discography is littered with tracks that if not necessarilly melancholic for the whole song are at least in parts.

Oh yes, I forgot Opeth! Their current phase is a bit "happier"

When it comes to Doom Metal a lot of bands build their whole career out of this...
Swallow the Sun, DOOM:VS, Katatonia, Anathema, Mar de Grises are some great bands that haven't been mentioned yet. The vast majority of their songs are melancholic metal (Katatonia and Anathema both have non-metal material, but it's still usually melancholic). Insomium are a melodeath band that purely do melancholic songs.

I don't know what you mean by melancholy, but maybe  https://www.metalmusicarchives.com/artist/existential-dead" rel="nofollow - EXISTENTIAL DEAD is what you need) At least for me there is something melancholy about it. Yes, the musician himself notes this on his social networks.

I recommend James Murphy, his solo albums are heavy, melodious and melancholic
