Subject: Best 15 Minute+ Metal Song

As I am sure I forgot someone's favorite epic, these are the nine I could think of off hand. And yeah, no Rush or Jethro Tull 'cause this is a metal site, right? My personal vote goes to Black Lake Nidstng (Shadow of Our Pale Companion was 15 seconds too short). Interested to see what the majority has to say about this one; maybe Opeth won't win a pole for once...

Out of those, definitely Agalloch.

Had to go for I, absolutely perfect. Though I'm not so sure why you shun Rush from metal when you have a Porcupine Tree song on the poll.
Would have also voted for Tulimyrski/Jst Syntynyt by Moonsorrow.

Well, I mean Anesthetize has some pretty heavy riffs in it, the "epic" Rush songs I can't really make an excuse for metal. >.> And yeah, don't listen to Moonsorrow; knew I would leave out someone's beloved epics!

No disrespect man, it's a good poll. There's no way you'd be able to list all the epics. Good poll anyway, welcome to MMA!

I really like "Anesthetize", so that one got my vote.

Since "Melody of the Death Mask" isn't on here, my vote goes to "The Prolonging".

Wow, quite a bit of submissions, thanks all! And yeah, sorry for missing some of your epics; I sometimes don't have as much musical knowledge as I'd like to. I'll check 'em later, I do enjoy the epics! Hoping that even if you didn't find your favorite, there's still a song that you enjoy. Also surprised at the lack of votes for Second Life Syndrome, almost chose that song...maybe I should have; ah well! Hope that you guys are enjoying the poll and I appreciate all the responses.

Damn, good list.
I was going to say Crimson, but honestly.....have to go with Black Lake Nidstang. When I really lay back and absorb that song, it is other worldly. An amazing experience. I love Crimson, I, and Black Rose Immortal but just doesn't compare to the power of that song!

Octavarium is probably Dream Theater's best song, even if I'm not a fan of the album.

Light of Day, Day of Darkness from the list. I'm a big of both PT and Riverside but for me Anesthetize and Second Life Syndrome I don't consider metal, but prog.

That list is too hard!
Yes there are plenty more but man, been thinking about it for awhile and cant decide .
The only 2 I dont know at all are: Agalloch Triptykon
. . . but have "heard" of them.

May I suggest Agalloch and Triptykon, then? Very good bands.

. . . and so I heard the darkness that seeped through my ears with tar entering my soul with its bitterness in the wake of benevolent depressionistic painted starkness.
. . . Jeez, I like Celtic Frost but (Thomas Warrior)Fischer has gone into "None more Black" territory that makes me want to paint my walls in charcoal black! Not something I'd listen to on a regular basis as sometimes music can suck the air out of the room (and me!). Most of the time I need music as a "Light" because my Job is usually creative and I need to be on my game, and sometimes the work can be tedious . . . the mood I'm in as of now with this work . . . I'd take a stage dive onto a Stake . Dark music can be really creative and musical, but for me, that kind of starkness can be very depressive and my life needs "life" right now. -No disrespect to those who like Triptykon.
. . . Usually I'm not creating Hieronymus Bosch type paintings .
Now Agalloch- This was a bit more easy to listen to, with its familiar sounds of Arcturus, Ulver, and the like. But again, I have to be in a mood to listen to this type of Metal, though I like it very much.
Music is something I take pretty seriously and is a "Mood setter" and usually I'm doing my Art and listening to music, as it may help in the creative process. So sometimes it depends what I'm drawing-that will dictate what I need to hear. But saying all that, Agalloch has some beautiful atmospheric parts throughout .

For me Crimson by Edge of Sanity. Light of Day, Day of Darkness, Second Life Syndrome and Octavarium are also great. The rest I do not know and the PT tune I dont like.

Block, that avy is pure win!
While my pick from this list was Black Lake Nidstang, the best 15+ min metal song IMO is The Odyssey, by Symphony X.
Surprise right? Though this is a great list. Black Rose Immortal, I, Crimson...all brilliant. I really like all the songs here except The Prolonging and LoD, DoD and I've never heard those Awesome list here.
