I know there's some on this site who have strong opinions about Darkthrone and maybe black metal in general so I guess I already know what way some will be voting here...not naming names of course Jonas and Patrick. Tongue

I decided to make this poll because I recently started on something I've been telling myself to do for some time, which is properly explore their discography, which is actually quite extensive and include more than one change in sound. I have owned A Blaze in the Northern Sky for many years but never felt inclined to buy anything else from them. I can't say whether than will ever change or not but I will say I've already found some more appreciation for both Soulside Journey and the early black metal albums.

Please vote for the three best according to you.

^As far as I´m concerned you´re right LOL

I´ve actually listened to some of the later albums and have enjoyed them, but I can´t understand the appreciation some people have for their early black metal period...to my ears it´s a load of crap and a waste of great talent. I don´t use words like that in reviews, but I´ll use them here. I actually just recently finished my review of "Transilvanian Hunger" and to my ears it sounds like someone is trying to cut through metal pipes with a rusty chainsaw for the duration of the album. I usually appreciate really extreme metal, but early black metal Darkthrone is just low quality music to my ears...and paired with the almost unlistenable sound productions of those releases...no thank you.

The most funny thing is that Fenriz constantly calls out other people for being posers...but he himself and his elitist attitude to me is just that...and don´t get me started on his nationalistic opinions and ridiculous elitist opinions you can find in contemporary interviews and liner notes from the 90s releases. I once read an interview with him calling out people who enjoy Death´s "Spiritual Healing" as posers...how immature and idiotic is that?

Most of the black metal musicians from the 80s/90s Norwegian black metal scene were entitled young boys who were bored and this was their way of rebelling. There´s nothing special about it (fans of Elvis and The Beatles did the same)...it was just another teenage rebellion, and a few of them took it a bit too far with the murders and the church burnings. To most of them though it was just a normal teenage rebellion, looking ugly and playing music their parents didn´t understand.

I don't mind some of the early releases but by and large, I prefer their later stuff. I'll have to listen to them again to give you a definitive answer.

The underground Resistance is my favouite but apart from Soulside Journey is probably the least representative album of the band. The last couple have been dull.

possibly my favorite band the last 5 years or so, love everything post-black-metal they did but impossible to not vote A Blaze In The Northern Sky which still blows me away, the drum sound is crazy for when it came out
