So the site has the phrase "MP3 Download" all over it, but I have yet to find any. Can users download MP3s from here or not?

So far, all I've been able to do is stream music, not download it. Are you using the words "streaming" and "downloading" interchangeably? They're not the same thing, not to me anyway.

"Streaming" is like radio. You can listen to the music, but that's about it. "Downloading" means I end up with a digital copy in my possession that I can listen to offline or transfer to another device like my iPod.

Lots of sites offer both. Last.fm (as much as I hate them) lets you stream music, but they also have a (very limited) selection of downloads: http://www.last.fm/music/+free-music-downloads

iTunes also offers free downloads and they change their offerings every week.

So, do you guys offer downloads or not? If not, you should stop using the word. It's misleading. If all you offer is streaming then just be up front about it.

No, and I've long had a problem with this and its sister sites for that.  I don't think the word download should be anywhere on the frontpage not only because it is misleading, but because people will find the site through web searches in an attempt to download music for free Wink

To stream the audio file your computer downloads it first, so the "mp3 download" expression is in fact not false. Just that you can't get the downloaded file (unless you know where to scavange).

There are no free MP3 downloads on MMA but there is a thread where users can post links to free legal MP3 download sites here: http://www.metalmusicarchives.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=98" rel="nofollow - http://www.metalmusicarchives.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=98

"MP3 downloads" is a term that drive some traffic from Google, if it confuse some we might lose some traffic by using other terms.

I guess Alex ( Harmonium.ro) explanation does qualify the term being on the frontpage. Thanks for sharing the intention of the phrase so openly Max.

Its up to people themselves if they can accept that.

In theory, that same idea might get in trouble though, couldn't it?  From bands who think we're giving their songs away for free?
