Images & Words. I can appreciate Awake and I think it's great, but it doesn't lift me up like I&W.
Frankly, I think SFAM isn't a good album. Every time I try sitting down to it I think I could be listening to something else better, and I always end up doing that.

I&W is my favourite from them and Awake the second. Scenes is somewhere in the middle, fifth perhaps after Six Degrees and BC&SL.

I can still remember when I saw the Pull Me Under music video on Headbangers Ball and it sucked me right in. I mean I was listening almost exclusively to death metal at the time, but somehow that strange "pop" metal act intriguied me beyond belief. Images & Words will always stand as something very special for me and Awake comes in second. Nothing they have released since Awake have been able to catch my attention like those two early albums ( I wont even mention the debut).

Yeah, Awake and I&W are the two albums which really seem to capture me whenever I put them on, more so than anything else they've released so far. I'm also a self admitted Kevin Moore fanboy, so his involvement on those two discs make me revisit them for his playing as much as anything else.

I'm voting for scenes to, although I&W makes a really close second place. And awake... well besides erotomania their worst...

Can't vote here. I love the three ones equally.
Their Debut is their second heaviest album, though (right after Awake).

Awake...the most mature of the Kevin Moore era albums.
Images and Words has some amazing moments but is still very pop metal oriented.
I actually don't own Scenes, but I remember listening to it quite a few times when it came out and being very disappointed given it's hype.

Scenes, definitely. The other two are great as well though.

Scenes From A Memory was the album that sold me as far as Dream Theater goes so I'm going for that.

All 3 are easy 5-star albums, but here's how I would rate them....
SFAM>>>>I&W>>>>>>>>>>>>>Awake
Octavarium would go somewhere inbetween I&W and Awake.

2-Awake (really really close to I&W)

Damn Joel... How you dare to post a DT poll before me...!!! you will pay in the flames of metal...
Love the three of them (I know you already know it) but I vote for Awake, my first album I heard of them and the one that change my life... I&W comes very close... and then... I don't know... a strong battle between Scenes, Six Degrees and Black Clouds... very tight... cool poll...

I've got to agree with you here. Awake is the reason I will be disappointed in anything Dream Theater ever releases . That's how highly I hold this album. It's got a dark tone that they've brought on some songs since (a few on their latest), but it isn't the same.
Kevin Moore was such a valuable member to Dream Theater, and his contributions to Awake show this. I'm more of a fan of his style even though Derek and Jordan are better musicians from a technical standpoint.

AWAKE , for many reasons, has the potential to live better with years mostly since the production is terrific.
The others 2 sounds always dated.

1. Awake 2. Images 3. Change of Seasons 4. Scenes 5. Falling Into Infinity ...then the rest. (sorry when dream....!)
Scenes from a Memory is a really good album obviously but it is also the safest and most predictable for-the-fans album they had ever done up to that point. It also marks the end of the GREAT Dream Theater era in my opinion, although I do listen to Six Degrees with enjoyment.
To be honest I was also disappointed with Rudess. I was floored with the LTE albums, the first one also making up for the uneven FII and I often thought that DT should get Rudess, what a team! Then came Scenes which I guess I had too high hopes for, so...
Anyway, yeah, Awake. Images or Awake are the only correct answers in my not so humble opinion! :P

I have yet to listen to Awake in full, but I own the other two on CD and Images and Words is definitely the superior one. Scenes From a Memory had a little too much bullshit and not enough metal. I found myself skipping a lot of the songs on it.
I like Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence, Train of Thought, and Octavarium better than either of those two anyway.

Their first three albums are the best, and Awake is their bestest. After Kevin Moore'd left group, their music became something that's not for me. And it still isn't. It's a pity because they were the best in prog metal. Unfortunately, the same can be said about Queensryche after Promised Land and Chris Degarmo's departure.

You know, I'm really not sure how we can run a Dream Theater's best poll and then automatically exclude 75% of their full-lengths from it.
Scenes is my favourite sure, but they have other albums I'd then rank before I&W or Awake.
I think I'll close this and restart it with a complete poll.
