Subject: What is your favorite vocal style?
Date Posted: 20 Aug 2011 at 1:39pm
I put this poll up at Prog Archives too and it did pretty well. And since there seems to be a lot more variety of vocals in metal than prog (as far as I can tell), I felt this was a good place to post this.
Anyway, I love me all kinds of vocals. But I'd like to know of you which is your favorite style? I hope I got everything down, but hey, whatever.
Please discuss! I think I like death growls most myself, but I'll wait for a bit before voting.

I don't have a favorite vocal style - it's all about context. Operatic female vocals would suck in Morbid Angel, death grunts would suck in Iron Maiden, rapping would suck in Dream Theater, etc. etc.
I tend to typically gravitate towards clean vocals and death growls, but it all depends on what I'm listening to.

I agree with Jeff. it is all about context. But I mostly enjoy clean vocals more.

I like vocals that are sung "powerfully" most of the time. I would call it shouting, but I don't mean in the thrash style at all. Kind of like the shouting on Earth Day (by Devin Townsend) or the end of The Manifold Curiosity (by Kayo Dot). Just like when the vocalists "give it their all," I guess.
But I enjoy about all of these vocal styles, it's hard to just pick one.

I voted for normal clean male vocals since most of my favourite bands fit that option best.

I like really raw thrash styled singing. The kind thats almost growled but not quite. Aggressive sneering attitude filled "fuck You" type vocals are right down my alley. The lead vocalists from acts like Demolition Hammer, Exhorder, Defleshed and Carcass are some of my favorites.

I really have a hard time deciding which I prefer since as stated before, it's all about context. Most of those styles appeal to me, though I don't listen to many bands with full-on operatic vocals, and some of the less common forms of singing (at least in rock/metal).

Of course I wouldn't want vocals in the wrong context. But that's not what this poll is about.
I went with death growls. When done deep and powerful, they're so effective.

My favorite type is probably clean vocals, but death growls are sometimes better when they're really well done. Yodeling is also pretty high up there...

This is a hard one. I'll give my vote to falsetto, mostly for bands like Radiohead and Sigur Ros.

I don't know deliverance.
But a good song with Yodeling (European alps style):

It's an old 70s movie in which there is a scene where an overweight guy is anally raped by some hillbillies while forced to squeal like a pig.

I dig the clean male vocal style followed ever so closely by the clean female style. Thrash screaming round out the top three.

My God TS.
Anyway, my favorite type of vocals are Albert Witchfinder's from Reverend Bizarre (comparable to King Diamond).

Wow, really can't vote. I can't say I have a favorite, it just all depends. Depends how it is used, if it works, and of course how it is actually done (I don't like all growls and all clean singing, some are better than others). So yeah, just depends!
I guess regular ol clean singing is of course the easiest, and some I can only take sometimes..like black metal shrieking.
Don't like pig squeals at all, besides that if done right I can enjoy any of those styles, even rapping.
Though I'd like to hear a metal band with scat singing, yodeling and tuvan throat singing!

Clean male voice, for me.

Other: instrumental. But if it is a must, I'd say high pitched vocals like (early) Geoff Tate's of Queensryche and (early) Ray Alder's Of Fates Warning (Alan Tecchio, Tom Mellicoat, Franz Herde or Mark Antoni are also okay).

Operatic male vocals (e.g. Bruce Dickinson, Geoff Tate, Rob Halford, any Power Metal singer, etc.) for me. Death growls, Clean male vocals (just normal type) and Black Metal shrieks all come close, although it all really depends on the music and how well the vocal style fits in. I mean, for example, Lord Worm is one of my most favourite vocalists, and Pink Floyd are one of my most favourite bands; but I don't think Lord Worm doing the vocals for Pink Floyd would work out.
...actually I would be kind of curious to see how that would sound. Lord Worm doing the vocals for Pink Floyd teehee
