Well I thought we needed a thread to discuss European style football/soccer (No American football. Please create your own thread). I guess itll be me and Chris talking to ourselves (or me talking to myself) for a while, but I hope when more people join, that we can have a talk about games, results and tournaments.

I'm a hammer. I follow West Ham in the English League.
My interest in football has waned somewhat over the last few years.
Apologies to my dear European friends but since the governance of the game has been taken over it has ended up as a non-contact sport and a game for girls.
As a youngster I played to a reasonable standard before a knee injury curtailed my career. I came across highly skilled players that could handle the physicality and many would say they used their skills to outwit the hard nuts. It was a game for men. Just watch a game that included the likes of Law and Best etc
Now, every game is played the same way and bores me to tears. I prefer to watch second and third tier games and local matches. I never watch the premier league or internationals anymore.

Well following The Hammers dont leave you many chances to watch Premier League at the moment now does it?

As my signature reveals I follow Lyngby Boldklub. Im a pretty enthusiastic follower of the
club and purchase season card every season and have done so for the last 10 years. Ive only
watched football for 10 years though. As a child and as a teenager I never enjoyed the sport.
I spend all my time in a rehearsal room trying to be a rock star. I didnt have time to watch
football. What a waste of time was how I felt about it back then. But a friend of mine gave
me free tickets for a whole season and I was quickly bitten by a mad football and since
Lyngby Boldklub is my local club (the stadium is situated about 2 - 2.5 kilometers from where
I live, this is the club I feel I belong to.
The club was founded in 1921 and has won two Danish championships (1983 og 1992), three cup
titles (1984, 1985 og 1990) and quite a few silver and bronze placements. Unfortunately the
club went bankrupt in 2001 and was relegated three leagues as punishment after having been in
the best league in Denmark from 1980 to 2001. An incredibly hard blow. It only took 5 years
before we entered the best league in Denmark again. unfortunately time and lack of funds has
made us an elevator team which means relegation one year and promotion the next. The clubs
biggest problem is the lack of a decent stadium. Its not for fun the supporter of the club
call Lyngby Stadium "The Ruin".
The club is known for its great talent work and have produced several national team players
throughout the years. Including Henrik "Store" Larsen who was the top scorer in the 1992
European Champianship that Denmark won.
Lyngby Boldklub is known for playing offensive attacking football which means that weve
never given much of a damn about the defensive part of the game. The motto has always been "We dont care how many goals the other team scores, as long was we score one more than they do".

I purposely used "follow" and not "fan" because I look for their results but thats about it now.
There are 3-4 premiership games live on TV every week here to watch if I was interested.
It tends to be a case of who can fool the referee wins the game. Can't stand cheats, another big reason why I can't watch it ..and don't get me started on the shirt pulling and holding in the box at set pieces, that eminated from Italy.
It was once such a beautiful game
I watch and enjoy Rugby now, the game where men now play

That might be why they get relegated so much, perhaps they can't score more than the opposition

Its good to see you support your local team (through thick and thin)
In this country we are a nation of glory hunters, most football supporters follow one of the top sides but live hundreds of miles away from the club.
Not only that but players who represent their country are cheered whilst playing for England then jeered by the same supporters when opposing their club - crazy!

Yeah unfortunately its been that way for the last 4 or 5 years, but hey all clubs have up and down periods. Even though we played in lower leagues the times when we were promoted its something Ill never forget. That feeling is fantastic. Lets just forget the relegations. Horrible, horrible heart tearing times. This year we are unfortunately heading towards another relegation, but we might still save our asses if those over payed sissies on the field deliver like men.

I'm only interested in european and world leagues.
Holland - Germany last week for example. Though, I wanted The Netherlands to win, but obviously Germany was way better. They won 3-0, they've earned it. I think Holland was thinking too easily because we were in the finals last world league... This should've taken them down to earth.

Yeah The European Championship is coming up this summer, so its of course also perfectly allright and encouraged to talk about National teams. I saw Alex had posted the 4 seating groups over at PA. Here they are:

I know Poland and Ukraine are the hosts but I still think its a bit weird to see them in Pot 1, judged on their results and qualities on the pitch. I hope Denmark will play one of those two teams instead of Spain or The Netherlands.
Horror group for Denmark would be: Spain, Germany, Portugal, Denmark.

Wed love to play Sweden. Itll be a close game with lots of intensity. This is the game you dont want to lose. Germany eahh its not the same, but beating them would of course be a major scalp.

How did Rosenborg do this year Chis. I havent really payed much attention to the Norwegion league this year. Molde ended up Champions right?

Is anyone of you listening to The Guardian's Football Weekly podcast? Brilliant stuff.
BTW, the extreme physicality is one of the things I dislike most about modern football.
I might soon be going to the first game since I moved to France, the PSG - Athletic Bilbao game in the Europa League. If we like the atmosphere and the overall experience we might be going on a regular basis. The ticket prices are a bit steep for me though.
Milan - Barca was brilliant the other day. I also enjoyed Napoli - Man City a lot.

Man that was a kung fu kick. Id say thats a bit too dangerous for my entertainment. If one of our players had been treated like that, we would have shouted w**ker and other more nasty things at the kung fu kicker the rest of the game.
I dont like acting and referees giving out freekicks for minor things, but there is a line you shouldnt cross and Id say kung fu kicks in head hight is crossing that line. That can be potentially dangerous.
The thing with less injuries in the old days, was probably also because the game moved much slower. At least thats the impression I get from watching games from the 70s and 80s for that matter.

Yeah and PSG should be worth watching again after so many years not being in the top 3 in France.
I watched most of Milan - Barca but watched Arsenal - Dortmund too, while watching some other programme being half asleep with fever, but I got a good impression of the game.

Now thats great fun. Incredible that they actually play some pretty good technical football in that clip. With a pitch like that any modern coach would be cursing and swearing that it was because of the condition of the pitch that his team lost

Are you winding me up Alex??
Not at all, just providing conversation. :) By physicality I am
referring to the force put into rule-abiding contacts, especially
tackles and shoulder-to-shoulder runs. I am often watching videos of
football played twenty or more years ago and the thing that strucks me
more is how the creative player can dribble and twist around the
opponents freely, in a manner that today would not be possible anymore.
Just look at these videos for example:
This stuff isn't possible anymore; most such encounters end with the
player with the ball being smashed into and brought down to the ground
or at least put off balance enough to lose the ball. Today this is seen
as a perfectly normal aspect of the game basics, it's part of the
"professional" approach.
Here are some typical examples:
Now we idolize Messi for his outstanding skill and we rate him as
probably the best footballer ever, but in reality we simply became
unaccustumed with such playing style (the dribbling no.10) as it slowly
disappeared under the pressure of extreme physicality. But back in the
day there were plenty of players whose style was just like that.
In fairness though, Messi probably is the most technically gifted
ever, considering he manages to dribble like he does in our days... And
the same applies to Ronaldinho.
It's no wonder that the only game style from our days fully based on
technicality, that of Spain and Barcelona, is not one in which
technicality is employed in taking on the adversary in a one-on-one with
the ball, like in the old days, but in releasing the ball in short and fast passes before the opponent can reach you in order to close you down (the so-called tiki-taka):
---
Now, from what you said and from the video you posted, the physicality
you mentioned is a different one, one which was specific to the
"romantic" era. This wasn't about ruthlessly closing down the opponent
as tough as possible, but it was about (sorry if the words offend)
extreme recklessness and even pure violence (kicking and hitting). When
you couldn't do anything of a sporting nature against the opponent,
you'd resort to that. Here's a classic example:
And the classic target of the romantic era:
His physical resilience to all this was just amazing. Probably the most
assaulted football player ever. One can even split in categories the
most used violent procedures against him, now all disappeared from the
game: standing in front of him for impact, hugging and bringing him
down, hitting his legs, making him trip from behind.
Maradona didn't escape it either:
Some variations from Maradona's time are the punch in the face and the scissor-tackle.
But this is probably the "best" moment of violence on the football field:
Personally I consider all this stuff barbaric and completely opposed to
the idea of sportsmanship. Fortunately I started watching football in
the mid '90s, when this phenomenen had just (finally) disappeared from
football.
I listen regularly to the BBC 5 live daily football podcast and I can't
stop noticing how whenever players from back then are asked about the
positive changes in the game, what they stress is always:
- quality pitches
- the more dynamic game (especially because of the liberalization of the
offside rule and of the banning of the backwards pass to the
goalkeeper), and
- the ruling out of violence from the game (especially gratuitous violence and the tackle from behind).
All of them seem pretty happy with the evolution, and so am I.
---
Phew! Glad I got that off my chest!
---
Oh, and the other thing that I dislike (actually this annoys me as hell) is complaining and protesting to the referee.

The only time I ever watch soccer (is that a bad word?? ) is the occasional match during the World Cup. Since it is one of the least expensive sports to play, several of my classmates in elementary school would play it (or baseball) instead of the more popular and much more expensive hockey. I grew up in a single income home, so my parents could not put me in any sports leagues, though I was on my school's volleyball team for 2 years (an even cheaper sport ).
I do have lots of memories playing football (that wasn't so hard!) during many recesses at school, even during the winter. That made for some fun full-contact into mounds of snow! I remember when my twin brother and I would play, we'd often be put on defense while the "better" players would cherry-pick around the opposing net. We'd both play rather physically, taking joy in making aggressive slide tackles. I remember one kid who was the self-appointed king of the sport (he did play in organized leagues) wouldn't shut up with his complaining about any contact at all. He was around our size (albeit scrawnier), so he was always fun to play against.

I got so used to calling it football from PA (even if I didn't go out of my way to say Soccer they would just have to correct me on it) and "handegg" makes me giggle anyway.
You are right Dan, it does make cheap easy fun and for "backyard" play football is much safer than handegg. At Uni when it would rain and things would get all muddy and messy we'd play handegg and while it's cheap and easy (you dont even need a net) we obviously weren't wearing helmets or pads and would play tackle (because cmon we're men!) and....well I am not a big guy

Eh I'm used to it, that is pretty much the #1 comeback.
Not really anything to say, people still die in American Football (sadly) though not at the NFL level, a few years ago it almost happened though and was saved thanks to quick medics, and at ALL levels people still get paralyzed and etc This one HS kid in my area is paralyzed from the neck down.
I always wanted to know how big these rugby guys are and how hard do they play? What are the injuries like? Because if they are as big and fast and violent as handegg players and don't wear gear...well fuck, they are insane! Most players have tons of health issues in their post career, so I think they may object to being called sissies It's sad to see guys back in the day who could destroy other teams now be confined to a wheelchair, or this one doesn't even remember winning the Super Bowl he's had so many concussions

What a stupid ass "fan". I heard he got a 30 year "not welcome" on Amstardam arena and violence charges from the police too.
I wonder what will happen to the goalkeeper. I understand he felt the need to defend himself, but I dont think it was necessary to kick the man while he was laying on the ground...and twice!!! Not the best case.

Extraordinary!
Well, final evidence for me that the world is officially mad and the tree huggers and human rights activists have won the day.
Where has the right to defend yourself gone? This is just fuckin crazy.
Believe me, if I was in the keepers shoes the guy would have left the stadium in an ambulance.
....but what happens? The guy who is assaulted is shown the red card like its his fault......you couldn't make it up!

It was announced a couple of days ago that the interrupted game between Ajax Amstardam and AZ Alkmar is to be played again but only children up to 12 years are allowed to be part of the audience. Allthough I understand the intention (there is obviously a fear that fights among the "fans" of the two teams will break out), I dont see many children below the age of 12 going to a football match without an adult to acompany them.

No offense, but why the fuck are some soccer fans - or maybe sports fans in general - so fucking lame? Don't they have anything better to do? It's just a fucking football match! Just like that fat idiot who attacked the referee during that Denmark-Sweden match. Although it is not right to kick a man lying down, the goalie did well in deflecting the attack, and that lame-ass fan had it coming.

Yep a lot of soccer fans are pretty lame and all the alcohol and drugs among the audience doesnt help. Its not so long ago I found a bag with cocaine leavings on the toilet during a match. There are a lot of drugs at matches (in addition to the beer of course). A lot of the people I watch football with smoke weed during the matches and have done that ever since their early teens. Nice guys but they definitely have an abuse problem.

It is the only spectator sport I know that a respectable Monday-Friday suit becomes a thug and hooligan on a Saturday.

I rest my case m'lud
I've said it for many years, Football will be a non-contact sport in my lifetime.
Yet another reason why I've totally lost interest in soccer - another one being the idiotic fans (again, no offense intended).

So my team started the second half of the season winning away from home 1-2 over FC Midtjylland. An important victory as we ate 3 points from our opponents above the relegation line. Unfortunately we lost 0-1 to Aab yesterday, but our opponents above the relegation line fortunately lost too, so nothing happened in that regard.
...we now lack 6 points to save ourselves from relegation and 13 matches to to win those points. Its hard but not impossible. Im really positive as weve enlisted some pretty good players in the winter break.

^My team Lyngby Boldklub is now 6 points from salvation in the best Danish league. Its practically an impossible mission as we will have to win the last two matches of the season while the team right above us have to lose their next two matches.

The Danish cup finale is played today. AC Horsens is meeting FC Copenhagen. Ill by cheering for the Horsens team. FC Copenhagen is a local rival to my team (our stadiums are placed only 10 kilometers from each other), so we have a long history of not liking each other.

Denmark is playing against The Netherlands in the first group game in the European Championship tonight. Ill be following the game and hope we dont get beaten to a pulp by the on paper superior Dutch team.

I'm not a football fan but as we have Euro 2012 co-hosted in my country I just had to post something in this thread. So... Poland opened Euro with Greece yesterday and there's 1-1. Great achievement for the polish team, pretty lame for the greek one Still, Lewandowski's goal was great:

An important game this Sunday for my team as they will play at home against number 2 in the league. We are currently number 4 with 4 points up to the two places that mean advancing to the Danish Premier League. So a loss will mean 7 points up and a win will mean that were only 1 point behind. This one included there are 10 games to play before the season is over.
My club was relegated last season (we finished second last in the Danish Premier League), so a quick return to the best league would be great.
