two iconic bands who are known for crushing rifs and solid drumming and sometimes epic songs,
both also starting-grounds for young musicians if they want to experience metal music and learn to play metal
so whos your favourite band of these two bands

Metallica and solid drumming in the same sentence? Well anyway, they're my favourite. I like the middle era of Pantera as well, Cowboys and Vulgar that is.

I cant really chose. Like Pekka I really enjoy Cowboys and Vulgar. I think they are quite unique albums and Dimebags guitar playing is outstanding. Take a listen to the solo in "The Sleep" for an example of his incredible playing. I like the next three albums to a varying degree. Metallica: I like the first two albums. Worship Master and ...and Justice. I think Death Magnetic is pretty solid too and quite enjoyable, but the rest is not something I enjoy or listen to anymore.

Very difficult choice, I think I'll put in for Pantera though... I'm listening to them more theses days.

Metallica, sure. I think Pantera is overrated.

I love Pantera as much as the next man (esp. Cowboys and Vulgar but also Power Metal and Far Beyond Driven) but the first 4 by Metallica is something else entirely, nothing matches that album streak in my universe*. And I also really like the Black Album and Garage Inc.
* well, King Diamond and Death are worth a mention here.

I have to throw my hat in for Metallica. I like what I have heard from Pantera but I never embraced them with the same intensity as Metallica.

No doubt about it, I'm taking Metallica. Like I said in another thread, I don't get that urge to throw on Pantera that often. On the other hand, I don't get that urge for Metallica as much anymore, but that's mainly since their stuff is pretty much fully committed to memory.

I like Pantera but they were always hit/miss with me. The only consistent album from them IMO is "Vulgar Display of Power" which is a brilliant effort. Outside that they have some pretty good songs.
So have to give it to Metallica, produced much more quality music.
------------- Megadeth, Metallica, Slayer and Testament. The real Big Four of thrash metal!

I´ve finally made up my mind, and Metallica got my vote, even though I really enjoy Pantera too.

I think that Cowboys, Vulgar, and Far Beyond are better than anything Metallica has released since The Black Album, but then you have Kill 'Em All, Ride the Lightning, Master of Puppets and ...And Justice for All, and nothing Pantera has ever released beats those albums. At the end of the day, it's Metallica for me.

But Pantera and Metallica are different in some aspects.

Pantera has the advantage of not having changed into something not nearly as epic as they once were, but Metallica has 5 fantastic albums and Pantera has 3.
And that aforementioned 4 album streak by Metallica in their prime will forever atone for anything lame they ever do.

The first time I ever saw Pantera mentioned in a magazine, the writer said they sounded a lot like a certain band which started with "M" and ended with "etallica". Pantera kept metal going and in the public eye at a time when Metallica was in severe decline, but Metallica did it first, did it bigger, and did it for longer.
Also, I'm never going to forgive Phil Anselmo for being dribbling drunk and encouraging skinheads to beat people up when I saw them live. On the bright side, I stood in the second row in front of Dimebag and watched him all night. And the other good thing, they brought Corrosion Of Conformity along as support band.

Pantera with COC as support...sounds like a really good plan

Ah, Metallica and Pantera. Probably two of metal most household names. Musically they have little in common, except that they have minimal truly great releases but otherwise produced a load decidedly average to total crap albums.
Voted Metallica because they have more good ones. Pantera peeked with Cowboys after a shaky start that lasted for all of their earlier output. Vulgar Display is decent though.

Load is an album that I've always known and enjoyed, and it's stayed very close to me for awhile. And seeing as I haven't listened to much Pantera I'd have to pick the former.

As far as favorite goes, I'll have to say Pantera. Love both bands though.

on the strength of the first 3 albums Metallica, especially Masters........ Pantera were also great but some of their later albums are a bit patchy with brilliant moments.
