It's been a month already, so I think it's high time to see what people think already. There aren't a whole lot of releases yet, but it'd be nice to have this thread now.
So far, Swallow the Sun's Emerald Forest and the Black Bird has my most immediate attention:

I've only heard four 2012 albums so far. Out of those Pharaoh's latest would be the best.

I think I've heard one (maybe 2) new metal albums so far this year. I'll stay tuned to this thread to keep tabs on things, and if I need to play catch-up later on.

Wodensthrone are releasing a new album in April. Looks like a predicted contender for album of the year.

Finally got around to Lunar Aurora's newest:
Rawer than Andacht and overall weaker, this one does benefit from having a more consistent atmosphere.

Love the Cover and Logo on the new one . . .
Interesting atmospheric parts on both, need a real Winter here to thoroughly enjoy them .

Has this year been totally awesome or am I just giving away too many high ratings? I thought 2011 was the best year for metal in a while, but 2012 might be even better.

I haven't had a chance to review as much yet, but I already reviewed several albums at over 8.5/10 on my site, which is the minimum to get a 4.5* on MMA's system.
I have to say though that of the few albums I came into this year hyped about, a couple, though still exceptional works, didn't make the 5* zone that the group's in question's last couple of releases made (I'm talking about Pharaoh and Epica here, though in Epica's case I would have reviewed higher had the production not sounded like it were recorded in a tin can or something). Hysterica's album met all expectations for me, though I've disappointed by some of the negative reaction I've seen it get in some corners of the internet. Debating with Arjen Lucassen's album is ultimately a 4.5 or a 5.0 though. First disc would be 5.0 without hesitation, second may drag my score down a tier though. Probably wasn't the best idea releasing leftovers and covers as part of the main album.
Right now, I'm most hyped about Huntress' debut which is out in just over a week. I don't usually buy albums without sampling most of it these days, but the two tracks I've been able to hear from this so far were enough for me to pre-order it. I'm expecting at least a 4.5 from it.
So far Xandria remains at the top of my still small 2012 list.

Today, I checked out the debut album by an Austrian black metal act Locus Neminis. Pretty awesome. They sound like a mix between Darkspace, Lunar Aurora, and Immortal. Just misses a top tier ranking.
This is the best song:

Borknagar's new album completely blew me away: excellent songwriting, great performances by all of the musicians, especially for ICS Vortex. Also, this band really shook me as extremely innovating.
So far, I haven't found any 4.5 or 5 star albums yet this year, but it's not even halfway done yet, so I'll see what this year brings me.

Their demo was promising and since all three tracks from the demo are also included on this debut album its no wonder the quality is high. Overall this is not really music I would put on unless I hadnt received a promo (which I have), but its mostly because of the clean vocals which I dont appreciate. I had hoped he had either stopped singing or tried a different style, but I guess that was not to be.

Arjen's album's really that high up?
I mean, I'm a huge fan of the guy ( still have some unfortunate holes in my collection, though), but that album isn't even special if you have listened to any other album he has released starting from Into the Electric Castle (the Vengeance, Bodine and first two Ayreon releases are mostly bad).
Some of those other releases sound promising, though.

I (obviously) beg to differ on this one. I love the mix of styles on the album and I think the main concept disc especially is a masterpiece. A great mix of prog rock, metal and folk music.

OK, serious question, have you listened to any other album by him? He has released, so far, as a solo artist (and as a collaborator):
As Ayreon (where you can find ALL of the ideas existent on this album much better presented, developed and composed in the albums parked with a *):
-Final Experiment
-Actual Fantasy
-Into teh Electric Castle*
-Universal Migrator 1 and 2
-The Human Equation*
-01011001 (Y)*
As Star One (same as above, except this project isn't as eclectic as Ayreon)
-Space Metal
-Victims of the Modern Age*
As Guilt Machine:
-On this Perfect Day
As Ambreon (basically a lesser version of Ayreon):
-Fate of a Dreamer (the only one so far I still don't have a physical copy)
With Stream of Passion:
-Embrace the Storm (he wrote many of the songs here as well)
and countless minor participation roles.
Really, in all of those there is something better and much more original than on his "solo" (because all of his projects are solo) album. It is basically a second or third-tier redux of everything he has written so far, "prog-music-wise".

^ When something upsets my previous number one it's usually something I least expect it from.
I may have to revise my score of Hail Spirit Noir's album to be placed higher in my list. I'll never be keen on that drawn out section during Into the Gates of Time but I was fortunate recently to get an interview with Theoharis for Heavy Metal Haven and after he answered my questions I had a whole new perspective of some parts of their music, specifically the last song on the album Haire Pneuma Skoteino.

My 2011 list ended up at 121 albums after I added the one's I didn't review at the end of the year. I don't add to my main list until I've reviewed the album (during the current year at least), which is why my list grows much slower than some of the others on RYM. And some of those others are really huge. See example:
I currently have the following albums to place, with rough draft ratings (I use a star system like MMA for draft ratings). Not everything is MMA material.
Flying Colors - Flying Colors (4/5)
Accept - Stalingrad (4/5)
Shadowdance - Future Negative Fantasy (4/5)
Dawn of Destiny - Praying to the World (4/5)
Crucified Barbara - The Midnight Chase (3.5/5)
Burning Point - The Ignitor (2.5/5)
Panic Room - Skin (3.5/5)
Luca Turilli's Rhapsody - Ascending to Infinity (3.5/5)
Nachtmystium - Silencing Machine (4/5)
Cloudscape - New Era (4/5)
Spheric Universe Experience - The New Eve (4/5) - my next review, draft rating has changed

Although 2.5 for Huntress...
Sorry dude - I've decided my ratings are nothing more than a measurement of my own personal enjoyment, nothing more, and I don't even try to pretend any more that they are or even could be anything else. I just didn't like the vocals for that Huntress album...but the riffs were good. Oh well...

According to my progfreak account I have listened to 42 albums that were released in 2012. Only 11 of them might qualify as MMA material. Well I guess 12 with Rush's Clockwork Angels.

^Thats enough for a MMA top 10 come end of this year Scott

I've heard some 2012, but the best album to be released (BY FAR) this year isn't even metal.

Great stuff man. You've got quite the treasure trove of prog metal, I look forward to checking some of it out.

It's a damn good year so far IMO. I've researched and invested more wisely this year as I haven't been dissappointed with any hard rock/metal I've purchased in 2012. I've enjoyed most of the ones my brother picked up as well. Still need to dig online to find some more obscure stuff though. And there are still at least 10 more "mainstream" metal releases I look forward to hearing that have yet to come out this year (Soundgarden, Converge, Cryptopsy, Voivod, and Behold.. The Arctopus among them).

Hopefully Jon coming back is a good sign. Still, I can't help but cringe when I see a song title like "Damned Draft Dodgers".

I've lost hope completely. It WILL be better than their last release (not hard to do), but they keep comparing it so how much it sounds like None So Vile and it won't come close.

At least it's probably going to be better than The Unspoken King.
But then again, that's like saying having diarrhoea is probably going be better than vomiting.
