Wow I had no idea we didnt have a power metal appreciation thread already, but it seems to be true that this is the first thread. Ive made this one a sticky.

On the subject of power metal the scene is usually divided into two different forms. The euro power metal and the US power metal. I like the darker type US power metal acts like Sanctuary and Nevermore, but I cant say Im overall a gigant fan of power metal. At least its very rarely I listen to anything power metal related at home unless its of the harder edged US type.
Ive had my fascination with the euro power metal style too though around the turn of the century. I listened quite a lot to artists like Rhapsody (later Rhapsody of Fire), Sonata Arctica, Stratovarius, Helloween, Dragonforce and Vision Divine.

I think power metal can be pretty bad in a cheesy way, but there are plenty of good acts, many of which are actually pretty hard hitting. Try out Rebellion from my above post for some of the more intense power metal.
To be honest I've still heard more Euro PM than I have USPM though. I recommend Pharaoh for fans of both though. I think they sit kind of between the two styles, more on the USPM side though. Their singer is Tim Aymer from Control Denied.

I didnt enjoy his voice or vocal style on the Control Denied album, but maybe within a more melodic context it works better?

I used to loathe power metal but fairly recently got heavily into it.
I never really knew of the genre back in the day but I did always love Helloween. I remember my friend getting the cassette of Keeper 2 in high school and I LOVED it. Still do. I just thought of them as a thrashier Maiden.
I thought Manowar was total shit back then but I love them now.
Power Metal might be my favorite kind of music right now. I just checked out Ancient Bards and they rip skulls. "Imaginations from the Other Side" has been one of my favorite songs ever since I heard it.
Some favorites:
Stratovarius-The Thin Ice
Gamma Ray-Insanity and Genius
Helloween-Eagle Fly Free, Savage
Iced Earth-The Phantom Opera Ghost, The Hunter, Damien, My Own Savior
Manowar-Defender, Metal Warriors, Brothers of Metal, Kings of Metal, Fighting the World; Black Wind, Fire, and Steel

Yeah its interesting how its a genre that you either love or hate. I didnt use to like power metal either, but after my first death metal phase was over and I got heavily into progressive metal (around the early to mid-nineties) I guess I began to be able to appreciate high pitched clean vocals. Something I always found so fairy when I was younger. The transition from progressive metal to power metal actually wasnt that big and by the end of the nineties and into the new millenium I had a power metal phase. Starting with Helloween and Blind Guardian and then on to Rhapsody, Stratovarius and Sonata Arctica (who were completely new at the time). Ive grown sligthly tired of the formulaic nature of the genre over the years, but I do on occasion find a quality act I spend some time on.

I must admit it is rare that I find a power metal act that brings something different to the table without being a hybrid of other styles. To be fair I can say that of many if not all genres though. For power metal though I'm liking Order of Nine's latest. Very different vocal style for PM. Quite baritone. Not sure if it will have wide appeal with PM fans though because of that, but I'm getting more into their sound with each listen.

Kamelot have a new singer - Tommy Karevik from the band Seventh Wonder.
I heard this. Cautiously optimistic about that one because Seventh Wonder is second only to Dream Theater in my list of favorites and that only because SW only has 4 albums and doesn't tour. But Tommy has said he's not leaving SW but will sing with both bands, SO I'm hopeful that SW will get more fans by proxy of Kamelot and be able to produce more music/tour/etc.

I've been really digging a French band called Nightmare lately: http://www.metalmusicarchives.com/nightmare%28france%29.aspx" rel="nofollow - http://www.metalmusicarchives.com/nightmare(france).aspx
How power metal should be played in my opinion. Loving the Dio-like vocals.
Rise and Fall is a great song, although Helloween do have plenty better. However, overall, pretty good playlist. Those were both good tracks you picked to bookend the playlist.

I'm really loving the work of Seven Kingdoms lately. These guys have gone through some changes in their sound over three albums, but remain mainly power metal all the way.
First album featured strong death metal influences and some thrash as well
Second album stripped back the death metal influence a bit but still featured some growls:
Second song reminds me of Iced Earth.
Forthcoming album is pure power metal, fast guitar driven power metal, the way it should be.
Highly recommendable to check all songs in order to take note of their evolution.

I would never give you shit for liking them - they're fun. But you definitely need to talk to Adam (adg211288) - he's definitely the expert. One of my favorite Power Metal bands is Sonata Arctica...but they kind of mix in some other sub-genres and so they don't qualify as pure Power Metal, I guess.

Their first 3 albums are pure power metal and their 4th is mostly power metal as well.
As far as starting points, I'd go with the Keeper of the Seven Keys duo by Helloween.

The Keeper of the Seven Keys albums by http://www.metalmusicarchives.com/helloween.aspx?ac=helloween" rel="nofollow - Helloween and definitely sound advice. Gambling With the Devil by Helloween as well.
No Helloween mention should go without one for http://www.metalmusicarchives.com/gamma-ray.aspx?ac=gamma%20ray" rel="nofollow - Gamma Ray as well, who have also made several masterpieces including Land of the Free, Somewhere Out in Space and No World Order.
Sticking to related bands, http://www.metalmusicarchives.com/iron-savior.aspx?ac=iron%20savior" rel="nofollow - Iron Savior also features Kai Hansen for a time. Kai is regarded as the godfather of power metal. That said, I like the band's most recent, The Landing, the most.
http://www.metalmusicarchives.com/blind-guardian.aspx?ac=blind%20guard" rel="nofollow - Blind Guardian as well, especially the albums Tales From The Twilight World, Somewhere Far Beyond, and Imaginations From the Other Side.
http://www.metalmusicarchives.com/wuthering-heights.aspx?ac=wuthering" rel="nofollow - Wuthering Heights if you like your power metal progressive and mixed with folk. Far From the Madding Crowd is I think their best album, not to mention one of my favourite albums of all time.
http://www.metalmusicarchives.com/rebellion.aspx?ac=rebellion" rel="nofollow - Rebellion mixed heavy and power metal and have a more aggressive sound than most power metal bands. Start with anything but the debut, although I recommend Miklagard the most.
The above spawned from http://www.metalmusicarchives.com/grave-digger.aspx?ac=grave%20digg" rel="nofollow - Grave Digger , a band with a similar style. Not as well versed in these guys yet though so no particular album recommendations. Maybe Tunes of War...
http://www.metalmusicarchives.com/iced-earth.aspx?ac=iced%20earth" rel="nofollow - Iced Earth combine US Power, trad, and thrash metal. Recommend Night of the Stormrider, Horror Show and Dystopia.
http://www.metalmusicarchives.com/nightmare%28france%29.aspx?ac=nightmare" rel="nofollow - Nightmare from France, also combine trad and power. Start with Genetic Disorder for a more pure power metal experience or The Dominion Gate for their more progressive take on the genre.
http://www.metalmusicarchives.com/seven-kingdoms.aspx?ac=seven%20kingdoms" rel="nofollow - Seven Kingdoms (I posted them earlier in this thread) are a bit of an ever-changing beast. You could tag their first album as a cambo of power, thrash and death metal, their second as power and thrash and their most recent as just power. Start with the most recent. All are killer albums but this one is the most focused.
http://www.metalmusicarchives.com/pharaoh.aspx?ac=pharaoh" rel="nofollow - Pharaoh are a USPM act. Start with The Longest Night.
http://www.metalmusicarchives.com/kamelot.aspx?ac=kamelot" rel="nofollow - Kamelot are another one of the big guns of power metal. Arguably they lost their way from the genre a couple of albums ago, but their new one puts them back on track. Recommended: The Fourth Legacy, Epica, The Black Halo
http://www.metalmusicarchives.com/avantasia.aspx?ac=avantasia" rel="nofollow - Avantasia are a metal opera project. Start with the first album, The Metal Opera.
It shames me to say I'm nowhere near as familiar with them as I should be, but http://www.metalmusicarchives.com/falconer.aspx?ac=falconer" rel="nofollow - Falconer . Chapters From a Vale Forlorn is a masterpiece.
http://www.metalmusicarchives.com/ancient-bards.aspx?ac=ancient%20bards" rel="nofollow - Ancient Bards are symphonic power metal, and one of the best ones IMO. Think Rhapsody of Fire but with female vocals and 1000x better. Start with Soulless Child for musical quality, although their two albums follow on as a concept so maybe start with the debut instead.
http://www.metalmusicarchives.com/kiuas.aspx?ac=kiuas" rel="nofollow - Kiuas I think have one of the most unique power metal sounds going for them. I like Reformation the most.

More:
http://www.metalmusicarchives.com/pyramaze.aspx?ac=pyramaze" rel="nofollow - Pyramaze - progressive power metal which has featured the voices of Lance King and Matt Barlow
http://www.metalmusicarchives.com/demons-wizards.aspx?ac=demons" rel="nofollow - Demons & Wizards - side project of Blind Guardian's singer and Iced Earth's guitarist.
http://www.metalmusicarchives.com/arven.aspx?ac=arven" rel="nofollow - Arven - very folk influenced power metal with something of an atypical sound.
http://www.metalmusicarchives.com/almah.aspx?ac=almah" rel="nofollow - Almah - Project of now former Angra vocalist Edu Falaschi.
http://www.metalmusicarchives.com/tad-morose.aspx?ac=tad%20mor" rel="nofollow - Tad Morose - I ought to get to know them better than I do really, but Modus Vivendi gets them included on this list already.

Sabaton, in my opinion, is kind of a one trick pony...but I really like their one trick, haha! They do this kind of "battle song" metal that would be what you'd want to listen to before suiting up and flying off to a dog fight if you know what I mean. And like dtguitarfan stated, most of the great power metal bands have a bit of other styles going on as well, be it prog, thrash or what have you. Even most of the female fronted bands similar to Nightwish you could probably put under power metal, if you ask me.

You will not find such an album. You will find albums that are stylistically very similar to the Keepers (the majority of the europower scene of the early to mid-90s) but none of them matches the inspiration and overall brilliance of those albums.
Avantasia (the first one) is a v.good album for sure and is interesting enough by merit of the guests alone.
For a "Keepers + Malmsteen" vision check out Stratovarius. Dreamspace through Visions is a safe bet, they are all very good albums and extremely popular among the fans of the Keepers. If you liked that, you might wanna check out Labyrinth's Return to Heaven Denied, a sort of Italian version of Stratovarius.
The Keepers mark the definitive sound of european power metal. But they are not the only reference. Just like german thrash had Sodom, Destruction and Kreator as the big 3, so did power metal: Rage (I would focus on the Trapped! to End of All Days era, previous might sound too rough for your tastes) and Running Wild, whose Port Royal to Black Hand Inn releases are all STELLAR, albeit kinda repetitive. I would start with Death or Glory. Vocals are not Geoff Tate-ish like Michael Kiske's but they suit the munsic very well and have a huge number of fans.
Another german band whose work has been compared to Helloween's (and rightfully so in terms of quality and they are close enough musically) is Heaven's Gate. Livin' in Hysteria is a classic.
I would also recommend wholeheartedly Scanner's Ball of the Damned. Amazing power metal album, first song features Ralf Scheepers (of Gamma Ray and Primal Fear fame) on vocals and it is probably among the best power metal songs ever recorded (Puppet on a String).
A few more suggestions:
Lost Horizon - A Flame to the Ground Beneath (check out the 11 minute epic Highlander - vocals steal the show)
Rhapsody - Legendary Tales. Laughable story and concept, dragons and third-rate fantasy stuff but the music is brilliant, a mix of Keeper power/speed with a dose of classical music interludes and sections that gives it a very nice touch of class. The following albums were disappointingly exercises in repetitiveness although the second one has many fans. If you like what you hear, check out also the guitarist's first album Luca Turilli - King of the Nordic Twilight.
Angra should probably get a mention here. More "progressive" than the Keepers for sure although nothing extravagant or "difficult" to follow at all. The first two are your albums. Angels Cry is the straighter of the two but Holy Land has a distinct feeling of its own, blending classical elements and brazilian music.
For the end, one of my favorite bands, Blind Guardian. Their roots go back to Walls of Jericho instead of the Keepers but they are so talented and so inspired that I fail to see how you won't like them! The albums to look out for are Tales from the Twilight World, Somewhere Far Beyond, Imaginations from the Other Side and Nightfall in Middle-Earth.
Hope this leads to some nice discoveries! To be honest I have the feeling most of this will be already known to you and your question was more rhetoric but perhaps someone else might find something interesting!

Anyway, I just looked into the previous page so I feel a bit of a fool, so here is a fresh recommendation for power metal fans:
Trail of Murder - Shades of Art.
This is the new project formed by former Tad Morose singer Urban Breed and Olsson (who made up the main songwriting duo of Modus Vivendi - that amazingly awesome album by Tad Morose). They are also joined by Bloodbound/Morgana Lefay (reunited! YAY!) drummer Pelle Akerlind. Inside you will hear Tad Morose style (and quality) power metal with a dose of hard rock choruses. The latter turned me off at the beginning but with some friction with the album, I am beginning to enjoy them more and more. Overall, a great album. This is my favorite song off the album:

I'm not fussed by titles, but I agree about the artwork.

Yeah I sat here thinking if there was anything and couldn't.

Power metal stalwarts are not having much success with 3D artwork lately.

It's better than Helloween's, although I'm more interested in Helloween's actual album.

I'm probably just disappointed because their last two albums had terrific artwork and this one is the opposite of those in pretty much every way.

There's few metal styles I've been so fanatical about and then become disillusioned with as fast as I have with power metal. I went crazy over the European branch of the genre, and for a whole summer through to winter listened to practially nothing else. As much as I still love many bands I think it's not evolved as much as it could have since Helloween's classic pair of Keeper albums, and I'd say it's more or less run out of steam for me. The American variant I'm still exploring, but it's a nice change listening to bands such as Manilla Road and Helstar.

I hear what you're saying....it's a genre I love, but there are many, many 'B' grade power metal bands/albums, and very few 'A' level ones. I get so disappointed when I find something new, look at all the 5-star reviews, listen to the 30 sec clips, order the album, then when I finally purchase it and listen to it.....big 'Meh'.

I guess I can partly agree with that. Power metal is my favourite genre (for now anyway, I have fads) and so I tend to listen to a lot more power metal right now than anything but most of my power metal ratings tend to end up as 4 stars, i.e. a solid album but nothing ultimately special. There have been about twice as many 4.5+ power metal albums for me this year though compared to last year.
What power metal albums have you been listening to to give you this opinion?

Actually, the debut album by Lancer comes as close as anyone is likely to get to my ears. Drops in early 2013, but they did an EP this year with a few of the songs of it.

some bands I enjoy of this style are: Gamma Ray, some Edguy, Hibria, Jag Panzer, Crystal Viper, early Firewind, 'a few others I guess just can't name them at his moment... I'll admit though I'm pretty picky w/ this kind of music(at least until I drink alcohol), so I don't listen to it all that often. Also, I hate metal bands who take themselves too seriously so I am more inclined to listen to the more fun-loving ones...(hence why I avoid most death/black metal like the plague, unless it's of the progressive sort...)

Hi Guys,
Found this Russian Power Metal band Сад Грез(Dream Garden) that released debut album last year called "Time Punishes Everyone".
To be totally honest after first listen I have been blown away by these guys performance. Although all lyrics, besides one song, is in Russian, it's well worth having a listen to. Check them out:

Here's an album I can't get enough of lately, Embraced by Fire by Wolfchant. They weren't really a power metal band before this album, just a few elements on their previous one, so it's a real change of pace for them. I've ended up regarding it as their best though. Still has folk elements and some growling vocals but overall, much more power metal than anything else.

If the reviews on Encyclopaedia Metallum are any indicator, this is the best album Stratovarius has done in years. 6 reviews with 95% average.

My favorite Power Metal albums are:
Nightfall in Middle Earth by Blind Guardian
The Black Halo by Kamelot
Mirror of Souls by Theocracy
Temple of Shadows by Angra
I like the Helloween and Stratovarius type "original" power metal but I generally like stuff like this ^ more.

Efreet is the melodic power metal band of the South Korea, founded in April 2005 by Jeongho Han and Hwan Hwangbo from the same university. The band name “Efreet” means the god of fire from the Middle East mythology. Gyo-Hyeong Lee (guitar), Gi-Cheol Jeong (bass), and Gwang-Weon Oh (drum) joined the band in 2006, and the band started to have active performances at the ZOO, WASP, Sky high, and Sapiens 7 live clubs, located near Hongik University in Seoul. In February 2008, the band released the first regular album “God of fire”. Gyo-Hyeong Lee, Gi-Cheol Jeong, and Kwang-Weon Oh left the band soon after due to military services and with the graduation of Jeongho Han and Hwan Hwangbo the band went through a period of rest. After two years, a digital single album “Vendetta” was released in August 2010.
Recently, Efreet focused on the reorganization of band and the second regular album, prior to this, the band released the second digital single album “Poetry of Vengeance”. “Poetry of Vengeance” is composed of two songs; one is the “Dear liar” and the other is the “Vendetta” (re-recorded and remastered version). “Dear liar” is a traditional power metal music with straight composition reinterpreted from modern metal sound, representing vengeance to the villains who make a habit of cheating, deception, and hypocrisy. “Vendetta” produces the fundamental rules of melodic metal, such as the brilliant melody and speedy dynamic guitar riff, and also possesses the simple and sophisticated composition. It also represents rage to the improper reality caused from villains through the conversation of an abandoned soul and nemesis. The previous version of “Vendetta” has raked over 25,000 views on YouTube in a short amount of time, and is being well received by metal music listeners.
