Great genre, very extreme, very violent, yet so overlooked. So I'm creating this thread to shine the light of glory on bands like Pig Destroyer, Napalm Death, Nasum, Cephalic Carnage, Agrophobic Nosebleed, Antigama, early Carcass and whatever you wanna throw into it.
This isn't just an appreciation thread, but a recommendation thread also. I'm keen to learn about more and more artists, and I'm sure many of you are, so don't be shy to post some work by your favourite bands
I'm gonna kick us off by saying that Prowler in the Yard - Pig Destroyer is one of the finest albums put onto CD.
For those not familiar, here's a sample:
Awesome?

Like to you being a fan of Rolo Jeff, brilliant band. Should be going to see them next month

Rolo Tomassi are mathcore. I had considered seeing them last week in Paris, but due to work overload I abandoned the idea.
iwrestledabearonce are grindcore blended with pop and mathcore. The girl growls the way grindcorer growl. And she sings the way grindcorer can't sing.

Grindcore isn't about the vocals. It's about the messiness, the energy and in a nutshell, it's basically unpolished extreme metal. iwrestledabearonce don't fit this criteria enough to be called grind. it's hard to say what grind really is, it's just easier to feel it, and when you compare them to bands mentioned above (like Agoraphobic Nosebleed), I couldn't even consider them part grind. Same with Rolo Tomassi for that matter, they're more hardcore punk than grind.
And who says "grindcorers" can't sing?
Check out 3:34, awesome. By the way this song is underrated and monumental, listen, seriously.

Terroizer (where some of the guy from Napalm Death and Morbid Angel were before their aforesaid bands) World Downfall is one of the early classics. Early Bolt Thrower Repulsion http://www.metalmusicarchives.com/repulsion--horrified.aspx - http://www.metalmusicarchives.com/repulsion--horrified.aspx Burtal Truth's first album.
The Czech's and the Japanese seem to have pretty decent little communities. Not a genre I oft listen to, but it serves its purpose when the moods right, especially in the live environ. I've fond memories of seeing Blood Duster (Australian band) tear asunder the PA system of some dingy pub on the outskirts of Sydney. Off humour and blood all over the players/stage, makes for a pleasant evening.

Relapse Records is probably the leader in Grindcore, they have all the best bands (Brutal Truth, Agoraphobic Nosebleed, etc...). this style is ever growing.
i agree that iwrestledabearonce is not really grindcore. interesting band though.

Grindcore really is an aquired taste, but you should try more than just a couple of Napalm Death albums. There are several subs and styles within the grindcore genre just as there is in most other genres, so who knows if youre missing out on something that you might actually enjoy.
Maybe try the last Nasum ( Shift) album or the latest Agoraphobic Nosebleed. Pretty great albums IMO.

I've enjoyed Rotten Sound and Nasum many years ago (still got their albums in the shelves) but since then my interest has reduced. But I think they were important bands for the development of my music taste, perhaps without those bands I would have never gotten to enjoy the harshness of black metal, for example.

REadlly didn't liked this album by them. Too much cliping. I guess they were trying to be as loud as possible, but that just went straight downhill in this case. Their next album, Anomalities, however, is quite good.

Not into the genre but I am drawn to the sheer power of Napalm Death - the riffs and changing time sigs of Suffer the Children is incredible.
esp the lyrics
Your unflappable conceptions Moralistic views Never open to criticism Your overpowering ruse Promises of sanctuary In eternal bliss With starry eyes and cash in hand Pledge all to the master plan THRASH!
Also love Worldeater by Boltthrower, and Cenotaph is awesome.
The lyrics to Cenotaph are simple and powerful and unforgettable
Alone you stand - The final parody Destined to silence - A memorial to mortality
Carved in stone - A tribute to the dead For nameless victims - Whose litany is unread
Never Forgotten - War's memory lingers on A dark reminder - To mankind's oblivion
This solemn image - Constructed with resolution A monument - To war's terminal conclusion

Napalm Death are known for their great lyrics. I wouldnt say Bolt Thrower quite reaches that level but theyve written a couple of great lyrics too.

3. Deathgrind is just a combination of grindcore and death metal. I cant think of an act right now allthough there are literally thousands out there. Im sure someone else has a good suggestion.
5. Mathcore? I have no idea but Im pretty sure its got nothing to do with grindcore. Probably hardcore influenced metal with and emphasis on odd time signatures.

Mathcore doesn't have anything to do with grindcore, except they both spawned off of hardcore punk.
And mathcore really has no inherent connection with metal. For example, Dillinger Escape Plan, the Number 12 looks Like You, the Chariot, and War from a Harlots Mouth are all mathcore.

I might be able to help - I've never been involved with anything like that but I could give it a go. Fairly busy with MA at the moment but it does mean I'm online quite a bit.
Also, can anyone review stuff and post it, or is it just people with experience? I've been wondering about doing something related to music journalism but havn't really got much idea where to start. Also never actually written a review before, but I suppose you've got to start somewhere...

Anyone can and are welcome to post reviews here on MMA. In fact we strongly encourage that members of MMA contribute with reviews. The streaming reviews on the frontpage of the site is the backbone of MMA.
Ill send you the PM which is the PM we sent to people interested in doing Collab work here. If you think you are up to the task after reading that youre welcome to reply and well talk about what you would like to contribute with. If not theres no problem with that either. Whats most important to us, is that people who sign up for Collab duties are enthusiastic about MMA and dont promise more than they deliver. Its all explained in the PM Ill send you in a minute though. And dont worry its not like we dont understand that people need to go to work and school or take care of their family. After all were here to have fun .

Basically, a special collaborator is someone who will help add artists to the database, help fill in album information (year of release, album covers, lineups, recording info, etc.), and add missing albums. A collaborator usually sticks to one or a few different sub-genres. We are looking for people willing to contribute consistently, but you of course don't have to put in hours upon hours of time everyday or treat it like a full-time job (unless you want to, but the gig doesn't pay ).
If you are interested in applying, you can do so in the following thread: http://www.metalmusicarchives.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=286" rel="nofollow - http://www.metalmusicarchives.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=286

They're supposed to be a legendary grindcore act. I've heard the album now, and it's interesting but nothing I'll listen to extensively again.
I was positively surprised by the "Fear"-EP by Dead in the Dirt, though. I've also just heard the new Kataplexis/Breathe Knives split. There's some interesting experimentation with noise on it, and a funny trmix of a microsong called "Fuckguy", but other than that it doesn't really appeal to me.

Id say about 90% of whats out there dont appeal much to me, but when I find a grindcore album that really clicks, I cant think of anything else Id like to hear before a wild night in town. That Kataclysm song sounds like death metal. Never thought of them as a grindcore band either.
1. Grindcore
Many people hate grindcore bands tendency for obnoxiously short songs, but I love them.
More
It's still pretty hard to tell the line between grindcore, crustcore, and some hardcore. Venomous Concept is one of those bands that people seem to think they are a hardcore band with grindcore influence, or they are a grindcore band with hardcore influence. I personnally think they are grindcore.
2. Crust
Crust grew into grindcore, and there are some bands that fit both genres.
3. Deathgrind
Takes the riffs more common to Death Metal and pairs them with the more grindcore like blast beats and the occasional grindcore riff, and generally the the growls are more death metal like. The song length also tends to be more "normal" lenght as opposed to the 1/2 minutes blasts.
4. Goregrind is pretty much deathgrind with a fixation of being as nasty and sick as humanly possible. I tend to not like these bands as much even if they are tongue in cheek. Normaly the vocal style is more of the gurgle sound too.
Rather appropriate video.......
5. Mathcore
Really isnt in the same sphere as grindcore, and they tend to have more in common with deathcore/metalcore bands than grindcore, even though there are some bands that do mix the lines between the two. The Tony Danza Tap Dance Extravaganza is listed here under grindcore, as is The Red Chord, but I have never thought of them as grindcore bands, and always thought of them as mathcore.

I like how sometimes, the production makes the music sound more brutal.
Look at the Gore Metal era version of Exhumed's "Necromaniac".
Here's the 2011 version. It's just not the same.

Not a really big fan of Exhumed. Stuff before Gore Metal was cool and it's still a great live band.

I liked the new album and enjoyed seeing Exhumed live about a month ago, but they didnt blow my mind or anything like that. Solid performance of a pretty one-dimensional backcatalogue.

for sure man. just went through the grind section (man lots of crucial stuff missing!) and rated a bunch of it, some of the ratings are pretty mind-boggling. the inalienable dreamless by discordance axis at like 1.83 or something, wtf???? i also play in a band, we're releasing an LP soon and doing a big US tour, check it out: http://sixbrewbantha.bandcamp.com
also forgot a crucial addition to the above post. given that this site spawned from a prog rock forum i think anybody on here into grindcore at all will absolutely love this band:
yes that's a 10 minute grind song.

Yeah this site is missing quite a few grind bands, and there aren't too many grind fanboys here either. I have not been adding grind bands because i'm trying to get rhough updating and making sure all the grind bands discogs are up-to-date.
Cool about the Lp and tour, I can add you guys to grindcore seeing as you have some demos and splits released.
Also if you want long grindcore songs, then try these monsters out for size.
This band ( http://www.metalmusicarchives.com/a-team.aspx?ac=a-t" rel="nofollow - http://www.metalmusicarchives.com/a-team.aspx?ac=a-t ) has two songs on their full length that are over 20 minutes long.

I Know quite a few that need to be added, but I want to get all the bands that are in Grindcore already, all uptodate with discogs etc..., and It really gets tireing with their ludicrous amout of releases.
