You know the idea that usually a band's first few albums, or at least first few once the classic line-up gets together are the best ones, and after a while nothing matches up ?
What albums from really late in a band's career do you think are awesome?
Things like Megadeth's Endgame or perhaps the last AC/DC album for example.

Holos Stali by Nokturnal Mortum, their most recent album was made almost 20 years into their career, is my most favourite album of all time.
Also, Rush's new album kicks tremendous amounts of ass, pretty fascinating consider the band have been together for almost 40 years into their career.

The recent albums by Iron Maiden come to mind - I even consider A Matter of Life and Death to be one of their finest.

I also forgot to mention the newer releases by Burzum, Cannibal Corpse, Dream Theater, and Symphony X (to name but a few). Although all of those acts may be past their 'prime', their albums released in the last year or so are all kick-ass.

AMoLaD is actually my least favourite Maiden record. That said, Brave New World is my most favourite Maiden record.

Napalm Death continue to release some great albums lately. Their newest one is certainly impressing me.

I forgot about Napalm Death! Their newest album is one of my favorite releases this year.
There's also Fates Warning, if you would consider the Arch / Matheos album to be a FW release. That one is a masterpiece IMO.

From what I've heard, Motorhead's Inferno is meant to be one of their best. Can anyone back that up ?

...he he its hard to say. Most of their recent albums are very similar in style and sound. I personally prefer "Overkill" but thats just my opinion.

The (unfortunately) last album of Celtic Frost, Monotheist, is really excellent. A masterpiece!

I actually own that album on CD, but I haven't listened to it for ages. I remember finding it fairly average, though.

This normally gets people hostile, but I prefer the three latest Slayer albums to anything they did before.

...yeah you definitely got me in a hostile mood there ...no seriously I like the last two albums a lot too. Cant say I have much love for God Hates Us all though, but its been a long time since I gave it a spin, so maybe me view has changed. Its been known to happen .

Me too. Although I like their old stuff too, its just that GHUA and CI in particular are amazing.

After many weak albums, Sepultura surprised me with Dante XXI, an excellent piece of music!

UFO's new album A Conspiracy of Stars is great!
Last albums of Deep Purple and Black Sabbath were surprisingly good.

Iron Maiden is the most obvious answer: All four albums since Bruce and Adrian returned have been excellent. Overkill has also been on a strong run as of late, starting with Ironbound. Fear Factory's Mechanize is easily the best thing they've done since the 90's. And the last three Statovarius albums have gotten progressively better, after their brief weak period, with Nemesis being one of my favorites by them.

Europe's albums since their reunion are great, I love them. And they released a new album this year - War of Kings, they are in top form if I may say so.

The only albums I like since Bruce returned to Maiden are Brave New World and A Matter of Life and Death. Dance of Death was disappointing for me, the songs are repetitive and not in a good way.
As for The Final Frontier, the more I listened to it, the more frustrated I got, I thought the songs dragged on for too long. I haven't listened to it in quite a while, I may give it another chance.

War of Kings is great because it brought back the spirit from Secret Society, another fantastic release of theirs.

Agree about Exodus, they've really been a roll with the last few. Also Accept's last 2 have been great, King's X last 2, whilst not as good as the early ones, have been a return to form after a run of mediocre ones.

WASP, Saxon, Armored Saint, Girlschool, Stryper and Helloween released very good albums this year.
