These two bands started as metal bands (with gothic and doom elements) and always experimented and changed their sound (which I always found interesting to listen to).

So which of them satisfies you more?

Very tough choice, they've indeed been steadily evolving with every release and both of their 2012 albums made into my top 5 list. In my heart, though, I feel like Anathema earns my vote, while at the same time, I've yet to explore another half of The Gathering's discography.

I prefer the death metal era of Anathema, without being a real fan or anything.

I only really like The Mandylion and Nighttime Birds by the Gathering but I *really* like those and I am in love with Anneke's voice. I could listen to their non-metal albums just for her. Which I have. Not my cup of tea but this thread reminds me to revisit them.

Definitely The Gathering.
