Hi guys, I believe the Young Gods to be one of the first industrial metal bands next to Ministry. I only have T.V. Sky which is a classic IMO.
Skinflowers is such a great track too.

Here's another from months ago!! (please be patient  )I remember hearing a few songs of theirs a while back. Are they metal enough for inclusion? I'm the only industrial team member at the moment, so I need all the help I could get!! Various sources (wikipedia, Rate Your Music)seem to label them as industrial rock as opposed to metal. Did they release a few albums that could be considered metal, and did they eventually change direction? I'd consider them more of a rock band from what I've heard. I think the heaviest song of theirs I heard was "Skin Flowers", and I'd consider that to be borderline metal at best. Do they have any heavier material than that? Hi! Haven't been much on MMA I admit so I don't know where you draw the line with these types of bands. For one thing they don't use electric guitars but samples only (and real drums), so quite simply, no guitars can't be very meteul right. On the other hand they sit on the very heavy side of gothic/industrial where you could also place Ministry. Seen them live, quite a heavy pit, but that's how it was in the early 90s. I think they deserve a spot in the industrial metal scene but I wouldn't want to open any doors here that might have you guys deal with suggestions like the Prodigy or Die Krupps |

Well as MMA is album based and we can tag some ( or most for that matter) of the albums with a non-metal label I actually don�t see Die Krupps as such a bad fit. I used to have an album by them I remember was pretty "metal" oriented. But that�s a discussion for another thread

Ok, please stay with me for this short overview. The Young Gods' first album was from 1987. In short, they sped up the stark industrial aggression of early Swans (even coining their name after a Swans song) and added a more metallic edge to the sound, sometimes by using guitar samples, sometimes without. Here's two songs from the debut. This was still one year before Ministry would show the first mild signs of metal on "The Land of Rape and Honey". I don't know any earlier industrial that was so overtly metal. Cool video for 1987 as well. Second album "L'Eau Rouge" from 1989 saw them adding a more playful cabaret/musical element to their sound. I've added "Charlotte" as an example (not metal obviously but an essential "Tom Waits" side of them) There was plenty of industrial metal as well such as "Longue Route" In 1991 they released an album with Kurt Weill songs, recorded around the "Eau Rouge " time and in the same style. I've added a video in an earlier post already. More interesting is their 1992 release "TV Sky" which was sung in English and broke them to a wider audience. It's their best album but a very eclectic one, having their known industiral metal (samples below) but also plain rock (the well-known "Skinflowers") and even flat out Prog in the 20 minute "Summer Eyes" where they played around with samples from "Riders on the Storm" and "Echoes". Fifth album followed in 1995, when industrial metal had started taking the "charts". But instead these stuborn Swiss guys were loosing interest in the whole thing and developed a more "techno-prog" oriented sound. (really I need to suggest them on PA  )It's one of my favorites of theirs but only two songs might be tagged metal, and much mellower then their old stuff. I think "Kissing the Sun is quite well-known but I've added it anyway. The Young Gods went completely techno/ambient on the next few albums with only the 2007 "Super Ready" (they missed an "s" there) returning to their older metalic sound. I think they deserve to be here for their pioneering work and IMO would tag the first four/five albums as industrial metal. |
