My vote goes to alternative-metal (Staind, Limp Bizkit, Nickelback, Linkin Park, Kittie, Disturbed, etc.). No offense to fans of the genre. Tongue

Runners-up: glam-metal and metalcore

A particular sub-genre will probably get hate-bombed when the alternative-metal fans see my signature. Ouch

Not sure yet.  I'm tempted to say black metal.  There are a few bands in the genre I like, but most other bands I've seen in the genre seem a bit over the top.  Glam metal is a bit cheesy, though I can think of a few good bands.  Alternative metal and metalcore jump out as having many bands I dislike as well, but some I do like.

Thinking about it now, the genre I'll have the least regret singling out is glam metal, so that will get my vote.  Sorry glam metal team. Embarrassed

I did hear "Girls Girls Girls" on the radio today and enjoyed hearing it though.  Smile

So like I was saying, no genre is totally garbage.

Glam.
It just seems about image first and the music is very much secondary to it by a long way

I know exactly what you mean.

As for Glam, I can understand the general distaste of "image first" but the thing I love most about the sub-genre is that it is one of the only ones that my friends and I can listen to and all have a damn good time despite our different tastes in music.  Everyone knows the words because they are so cheezy and predictable, and that's the best part.

Glam. I hate many bands of the sub genre. I actually like alt metal (except bands like Linking Park, very pop oriented).

I'm not voting and definitely not saying worst because I've got absolutely nothing against them, but I don't think I have any Power or Industrial metal albums in my collection.

By the way, according to our site half of the bands mentioned in the first post are not Alt Metal.

Most goth ( not all) put me off. Angst filled teenagers, whitechalked and with too much makeup. Maybe Im too old?LOL ( you know Paradise Lost didnt use to wear makeupConfused). The music tends to be very generic too. There are some genre defining and excellent acts in the genre though.

The trinity of crap metal: Nu metal, glam metal, and metalcore. Didn't vote alt metal because despite it containing the nu metal bands there are plenty of alt bands with merit. Glam can be fun I guess, though still is one of the worst money-mongering trends ever. Voted metalcore: whiney generic pseudo-heavy crap.

When it comes to metal, I'm such an elitist b*****d that one specific sub-genre (guess what) is clearly and easily the best. Not that there wouldn't be some great albums in death and doom metal, and also prog metal. And if bands like A Perfect Circle are considered alt metal, then that too.

That's why it's hard to choose the worst, because I seriously don't have much to say about most of those genres listed. Possibly metalcore, or if nu metal bands are considered as alt metal, then that too.

And to avoid misunderstandings, I love other kind of music, just not from metal. Ambient, noise, some rock, and stuff like that is often on the level of my favourite metal sub-genre.

Interesting how I'm on the metalcore team but I'm not even offended yet lol.
There is A LOT of metalcore I honestly don't like, but I can say the same for thrash metal, black metal, traditional metal, progressive metal and so on.
Looking through my iTunes list, I honestly have more metalcore than I do thrash metal, which is particularly interesting because thrash metal was my first true love as far as extreme metal genres go, but I've largely gotten bored of it now because of bands like Trivium doing their boring as shit "retro thrash" thing.
There's plenty of good metalcore bands, but like any genre you need to dig deep.
You can't just listen to the generic crap like Bullet For My Valentine  and say "OH MAN ALL METALCORE IS CRAP", because there is plenty of stuff that rises.
While not everyone is going to be a fan, I think it's hard to deny band from the metalcore genre like Periphery, The Dillinger Escape Plan and Between the Buried and Me (although to me, BTBAM is 25 per cent metalcore, 25 per cent death metal, 25 per cent prog rock and 25 per cent prog metal, but for the sake of it lets call them metalcore because the band members obviously fit into that aesthetic) are extremely creative bands that have pushed the boundaries and have even gone on to influence the non-core genres of metal

Yeah, it's hard to diss an entire genre, but if I had to choose one, and my life was at stake, it would probably be glam metal, because of its focus on image over music. That being said, there are plenty of songs and albums within the genre that I really like to listen to.

I won't vote anything because I believe there's no such thing called worst genre
any genre should have its best performers and also bad one, no matter what it is, from rock, blues, pop, dance, R&B, jazz, folk, etc

therefore no such thing called a perfect genre that's truly exist,
the one thing that exist is a genre that we like or worship and that's all :)

I probably have the most nasty glam reviews on this site at this point, but I grew up with that music and some of it is really good. If someone can't enjoy putting on the first couple songs of Girls Girls Girls on a summer ride with the top down or at the beach or whatever, well...lighten up.

Metalcore was my choice, because it frustrates me so much. I hate metalcore vocals, but I love the energy and bands like BTBAM are clearly doing some great things. "Feed me Fear" is friggin brilliant stuff but metalcore is like the volume wars to me...the continuous blast beats with the continous harsh vocals are like listening to music with no dynamics...

Enough of that. For the most part there are good and bad bands in every genre.

It was tought choosing between Glam and Alternative/Nu Metal but I went with the former seeing as there's two Alt Metal bands I like (Faith No More and System of a Down) where as I haven't heard a single Glam Metal band I like.

Grindcore for me, it's a combination of all of my least favourite metal sub-genres and is thus insufferable to my troubled and writhing earholes. I'm too traditionalist for a lot of the extreme genres. Thrash is the exception to the rule which I love and enjoy very often. But the majority of death metal and all that followed it, is just too much for an 'old school' denim and pint headbanger like myself. LOL

I was tempted to vote for Glam Metal, which I loathe as a genre - even if that includes some controversial bands, such as Alice Cooper and even Kiss >>> for me Glam metal is an 80's thing, not 70's, but I understand they are included).... but I must that the music is not the un-listenable form of metal (except bon anJovWinki)
Some of these extreme form of metal music are much harder on my eardrums.

I went for either industrial or Grindcore (I already forgot)EmbarrassedLOL

I dislike most Alternative Metal...

I dislike a lot of Glam Metal, but the genre has a few fantastic bands...

And I can't stand most grindcore. Just noisy 30-second songs with no musical value IMO. There are a few exceptions, but I generally dislike this genre.

I voted grindcore.

Glam, but anything 'glam' annoys me to be honest.

I find the whole folk-metal scene very trivial and generic. So I voted for that.
There once was one great folk-metal band Skyclad but everything that's been released in the 00's is a formulaic sznoozefest.

The same goes for Gothic Metal but that genre had more great pioneers (Paradise Lost, Katatonia, Tiamat, ...)

I don't like most of the glam-metal thing neither but that's more a matter of taste. I'm sure there's some great stuff in there.

OK, since this poll is based on personal preference (or lack thereof), I've changed the title from 'worst' (which is an objective statement) to 'least favourite'. Black Kvlt metal, for the reasons posted in my Hello thread.

Metalcore is generally pretty balls though. And Nu Metal I don't really consider metal.

I feel the same. I don't particularly like their music, but I think that they're pretty much an anti-music band anyway, but their lyrics are extermely funny.

^I find both their music and lyrics to be hilarious. Well, the music is hilarious maybe a couple songs through and then the gimmick's over. But then the lyrics never get old.

But seriously, sometimes there's not much better than Pig Destroyer or Cephalic Carnage.

Well I think that Expliting Dysfunction is pretty similar in style to Lucid Interval, but my only beef with it is the horrific production. If you can see past that I think it may be even more experimental than the former. Check this sample out:

Off the same album, presents the style pretty well I think. Personally I love it.

Grindcore gets hate because it's probably the least accessible. That or Avant-garde metal. And grindcore doesn't have the intellectual associations, so that's probably why it's being hated on.

grindcore, eveything else that ends with -core, glam metal, gothic, power, symphonic etc. also all 98,9 % of thrash, trad., prog, industrial, death, black, avant garde and alt. metal.

there are however tremendous bands in genres of wich nearly everything else is shite

Well i don't like the most of Black Metal because of their fake "satanic" lyrics and because of the noise they produce and it's far far far away from the real heavy sound. Second the most of the Metalcore because of their fake "antisocial" lyrics. And third the most of the European Power Metal bands because they have no power  at all (put anyone of those "neoclassical-power-European metallers" next to Armored Saint and you'll HEAR the difference).

^.. yeah.. I don't get into the more 'extreme' metal. Most of it I suppose is juvenile posturing .. if they were good looking they'd be hair metal and get lots of women.. so if they aint'... just be angry and pissed at the world since the only people that would meet them backstage are similar loser boys and that can't be much fun hahah.

and that which isn't...  run very ...very far away.  Those people are scary..

Ministry started as an electro-industrial band but very soon became a brilliant industrial-metal with massive riffs and cut-to-the-bone lyrics real heavy band. And of course Psalm 69 is a metal monument.

I really don't like glam that much. You can tell there's a lot of people from PA ,since no one voted for prog metal astheir least favorite. LOL

Come on boys! Why glam? You don't like women? Personally I love the most of all these party hard rock/metal bands!
And by the way the members of these band many times are much better musicians than many "extreme" and "heavy" guys...

Sure it depends the band but at the most of the cases I think I'm right. And yes many extreme bands have great musical skills and many of them by the years improve themselfs as mucisians. For example Voi Vod. When this band started they didn't know how to move their own hands and look at them now! But now you can't call them extreme band...

Whitedragon, I sincerely hope you are joking about glam rock musicians being "better" than extreme metal musicians. Confused

I'm not saying I necessarily disagree with you, but that post is fairly ignorant and you haven't clarified what you mean by "better musicians". Do you mean in terms of technicality? Emotion? Image/Attitude?

J-Man, a lot of the fastest shredders around came from glam bands.  That doesn't mean they're better musicians, just that they w**k more

My least favourite must be metalcore

I'm not saying that extreme metal musicians or glam metal musicians are superior... the only intent was to point out that white dragon's post was a bit unfair. Saying that "glam musicians are better than extreme metal musicians" is a pretty ignorant response. It's a case-by-case basis. Smile

My friend J-Man when I'm talking about "exteme" and "heavy" guys I'm talking about all these low technic bands who produse noise because of the low level of their technical skills. Never had a dillema between technique and emotion because if you really want to "take out" what's inside your mind you MUST have a good level of technical skills. In simple words you must know how to play your instrument. And yes many times I'm very tired of all these "extreme' bands with the three chord songs who finally put some acoustic parts at their fourth album and call it "music progress". I'm not a mucisian - my brother is - but I heard a lot of "guitarists" who don't like the "cold with out feeling" kind of playing of Malmsteen or Randy Rhoads and - guess what my friend - most of them they didn't know how to play properly a simple version of "Smoke On The Water" a three chord song... Anyway I think that some people at the sub-genre of Glam Metal they found the "easy target' to burry some very good Hard Rock bands including my self when I was many years younger. It's very easy to critisize the "light" sound of Faster Pussycat for example and the "girl like" look they have but what about fake blood at Slayer's photos from their first album? Who is the "poser"? Notice that personally I like both of these two bands...

Dave Lombardo is the man though. He rips on the skins, and Kerry King is an amazing and inventive guitarist..... while Faster Pussycat... doesn't have that skill. at all.

Honestly I don't care to get involved in an argument about whether or not glam metal musicians are more talented than extreme metal musicians. My intention was actually the contrary. I wanted to point out that this: "And by the way the members of these band many times are much better musicians than many "extreme" and "heavy" guys..." isn't a fair response. Neither are your constant stereotypes in your most recent reply.

It's a case-by-case basis. The definition of a "better musician" varies from person to person, and saying that most glam bands have better musicians than extreme metal musicians is just plain ignorant. Keep in mind that in many cases I agree with you. Wink

J-Man all I wanted to say was this: Some people NOT ALL when they talking about Glam Metal mysteriously focusing at the image ONLY. But anyone can understand this: At the end of day the only thing that matters is how many good songs you're left behind. And the Glam Metal bands have a lot of good songs. And I insist that Glam Metal is the "easy target" for many people. Talking tomorrow because in Greece is 5.20 AM and I need some sleep! I will explain my opinion much better tomorrow.

OK - that makes more sense. Smile

Your argument changed a bit here... originally you said that most glam bands have better musicians than extreme metal bands (which is, like I said earlier, a bit benighted). Your new point is pretty unarguable (at least for me). Glam bands are an easy target for many people due to their "popstar" imagery and lyrics.

Then again, who can deny similarities like this:

LOL

Black Metal, Sludge/Post-Metal.

Really not my cup of tea. I like a handful of grindcore, gothic and symphonic metal bands but I'm not crazy about those either...

I'm going to check out what avant-garde metal is, I have an instinctive disliking for the label :P

I've gotta say I kind of regret voting Metalcore because I absolutely love at least one band (Converge), whereas something like Glam or Grindcore I just don't touch

edit: on second thought, I see Converge were moved to the relatively new "hardcore and crust" genre so I'm free to hate Metalcore all I want LOL
