If you are looking for some nice bands, it is hard to go past maudlin of the Well, Kayo Dot, Diablo Swing Orchestra, Mr. Bungle, Sleepytime Gorilla Museum. All very unique.
Personally, I'd suggest Kayo Dot's Choirs of the Eye, and Diablo Swing Orchestra's The Butchers Ballroom. Also, maudlin of the Well's latest album, Part the Second can be legally downloaded for free from the band's website. It's not really metal, but a good album nonetheless.

^Yup, Kayo Dot's first two for avant-metal and their second two for pure avant. Also try to check out any motW, all amazing albums.
Here's a link to the free download of The Butcher's Ballroom as well - http://www.jamendo.com/en/album/49216 - http://www.jamendo.com/en/album/49216

EBONYLAKE : The music proposed is an original mixture of technical black-metal and avant-garde classical (with influences drawn from great contemporary classical composers like Penderecki or Prokofiev, as well as horror movie soundtracks).

There music is fantastic, but them vocals! You REALLY have to be in the mood .
There were alot of folks that would request these songs on my fave Prog Internet station and
everyone would laugh on the chat-board and do their best oooooooOOOOOHHH EEEEEE
EEEEEEAAAAAAHHHHHHHHOOOOOooooooohhhhh!!!!
And then i'd quietly write:
"atrox is short for atroxious" They sound really tamer now without the Female vocalist.
<---"Atrox" Smilie from station!

Giant Squid was a good recommendation, whoever made that one.
I will back up the motW claims. IMO, the best avant-garde band ever, and much better than Toby's latest project, Kayo Dot.
For some reason, avant-garde tendencies are found in a lot of black metal bands. Negura Bunget, Arcturus, Whirling, etc.
Also try some folk-metal acts like Agalloch and Senmuth. They have their avant-garde tendencies.

"To Mega Therion" and "Into the Pandemonium" by Celtic Frost. It's old and not as "weird" as a lot of modern avant metal, but there are still a lot of interesting things on these two albums.

Seconded on "Into the Pandemonium". It's a landmark avant-garde metal album.
Another quick recommendation: Tiamat's "Wildhoney".

^Yeah that Wildhoney album really is something special. I saw Tiamat twice on the tour supporting that album ( and once on the Clouds tour too). Tiamat were at the top of their game in those years. Personally I wouldnt label Wildhoney avant garde though. Its kind of a doom/ death metal album with lots of progressive ideas to my ears.
I know its probably getting trivial but I will recommend 666 International by Ddheimsgard again: http://www.metalmusicarchives.com/ddheimsgard--666-international.aspx - http://www.metalmusicarchives.com/ddheimsgard--666-international.aspx . Now thats a pretty avant garde black metal album for you there.

Yeah, you really should listen to ZU! A great Avant-Garde band, but very underrated.
