Subject: 2013 in Metal

This topic is obligatory is it not? And we had one for 2012 in 2012 before this date so it's overdue!
I believe I've been slower in 2013 than I was in 2012 for reviewing new releases, but I hit 20 today. Here is my equally obligatory Rate Your Music list of them: http://rateyourmusic.com/list/adg211288/2013_album_rankings" rel="nofollow - http://rateyourmusic.com/list/adg211288/2013_album_rankings

Well...I havent really begun reviewing many of the 2013 promos I have lying around, so these are the only albums Ive had time to review (not all reviews are posted yet):
1. Helloween - Straight Out of Hell 2. Andy Winter - Incomprehensible 3. Hatchet - Dawn of the End 4. Suffocation - Pinnacle of Bedlam 5. Void of Sleep - Tales Between Reality and Madness
Im not too crazy about the Helloween album, although its certainly decent, but the other releases have been quite a pleasure to review...

I have enjoyed quite a few new releases already.
Enforcer - Death By Fire Darkthrone - The Underground Resistance Manilla Road - Mysterium Rotting Christ - Κατά τον δαίμονα του εαυτού Voivod - Target Earth (worse cover art of the year)
Lots more to come including Ghost & Dream Theater.

I've heard a lot of other great releases that I haven't had the chance to review yet, but I'm hoping to get on those soon. The new Suffocation is something I've really been enjoying lately.

All I've heard in full so far has been the new Tomahawk, Voivod, and Steven Wilson (which is not metal). I've enjoyed them all though.

I thought it was solid but patchy. Some songs stood as some of the best from the Deris era for me but others as some of the worst. I gave it a 4 star range rating in the end but for me its a definite step down from their last couple of releases.

What I have listened to so far:
Darkthrone - The Underground Resistance
Helloween - Straight Out of Hell
Katalepsy - Autopsychosis
Manilla Road - Mysterium
Voivod - Target Earth
I liked 7 Sinners quite a deal more than Straight Out of Hell. That being said, it definitely has it's moments. So far I'd have to say my favourite of 2012 is Voivod's. I find myself going back to it and enjoying it just as much as the listen before. The new Darkthrone and Manilla Road are kickass too. Katalepsy released a pretty awesome album. I'm waiting to get the new Rotting Christ in the mail before I listen to it.
I find this year is pretty slow for me so far, considering I've only listened to 5 albums. There's a couple I need to get around to checking out (Suffocation's newest in particular).

These have been my very favorite this year:
Riverside - Shrine of New Generation Slaves
Portal - Vexovoid
Saille - Ritu
Posted By: Jbird
Date Posted: 09 Mar 2013 at 12:44pm
I really like the new Riverside, though it's probably the least metal of their albums.
The new Stratovarius is pretty decent, not great, but decent. I've liked all 3 albums that have Matias Kupiainen on guitar. I can't say the same about the Tolkki era...
edit: The new Circle II Circle is very good, I'd put it up there with their debut or Burden Of Truth (my personal fav)
I just got the new Steven Wilson in the mail, the plastic wrap is still on it as I type this....

Its not really Metal more along the lines of Power Violence I would say but it is amazing I would say Abandon All Life by Nails is the best I've heard this year so far.
Soilworks new album is pretty good though Melodic Death Metal isn't really my thing, and Suffocation's new album is pretty good, their best album since their reformation in my opinion.

Two albums I desperately waiting for the releases in Brazil:
Voivod - Target Earth (will be released here in the end of April)
Cathedral - The Last Spire (who knows...)

So far the only remarkable 2013 release I've heard was Abandon All Life by Nails. Some brutally ferocious negative hardcore it must be said. But now that I see it seems that I've lost a few...I didn't know the new Suffocation and SFU had come out yet. I also need to invest time in the new Byzantine.

Splice - Mythological Deviance 13. Infernal Poetry - Paraphiliac 14. Long Distance Calling - The Flood Inside
...Id say out of those its the Inter Arma album that has left the most positive impression...but there are quite a few good albums among them.

^ I'm looking forward to hearing the new Summoning. The trailer sounds pretty epic.
The new Rotting Christ is a pretty awesome album. That being said my expectations were very high and a small part of me feels underwhelmed. It's definitely still one of the best I have had a chance to hear so far this year. I got the new Krypts in the mail today and holy shit is it crushing. I knew I would like it, but I wasn't so sure if it would wow me. I'm pretty blown away by it.
I got a few other 2012 releases coming. I'll wait until they arrive until I touch up on those.

The new Sacred Mother Tongue............Andy James!!!

I just got the new Serenity, gave it one listen.
It's a good album if you like Serenity / or Kamelot-like power metal, but I don't think it's as good as their albums 'Fallen Sanctuary' or 'Death & Legacy'.
Maybe 3.5 stars at best. But that's on 1 listen...

Man . . .
I am WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaayyyyyyyyy behind .
But . . . I was sent a preview to this album via-my YOUtube account.
Could someone have actually made an "Original" (Prog)Metal album? It could be said that this is a lot like the band "The Ocean", but there is something more atmospheric,
symphonic and surprisingly heavy/experimental-out of left field about this one that will ease you to
sleep, then ATTACK you awake!
A beautiful album .

"Suicidal's back! Suicidal's back!
My name's Cyco Miko and I'm a maniac...
You know you missed me and I guess I missed you too
It's time for us to share that special magic that we do"
Suicidal Tendencies - 13. Holy shit, holy shit.
My heart and brain are all over the floor. Easily goes into the top ten, probably 5 (and we'll see) of the year.
Masterclass level band, insane groove and coolness, addictive Cyco Miko lyrics and finally people to fill the void of Rocky George and Rob Trujillo. As for the drummer... "holy fucking shit".
Musically it goes everywhere in the Suicidal catalogue. Closer stylistically to Suicidal for Life but expanded to include their hardcore skate side, as well as the 90s alternative funk side. But mostly it's about slamming and grooving to those flowing words and performance of Cyco Miko. His heart on a platter on this one.
Literally, the entire album hangs from his vibe, urging everyone who once called himself a Suicyco fan, to give it all. Maybe the cynical mind will call this safe and nostalgia betting. However, the band is so damn on fire that there are no objections from my part whatsoever. I surrendered upon second listen, with the lyrics in front of me. The entire time I was mentally in the pit, singing the lyrics and dancing around like a maniac. Air guitaring to that bridge on Smash It. Slapping da bass on "Life..." Trying to air drum accurately (impossible to get those insane fills, no). And I am already certain I will soon know by heart the lyrics and move around like an idiot trying to mimic Cyco Miko's coolness and uttery fail in the process. Welcome back Suicidal! Please stay!
Best 13 album out there. That's a fucking comeback right here.
Note: I think those who will get it mostly are those who understand how awesome Suicyco Motherfucka is. If that doesn't mean anything to you, you really, really need to listen to the Art of Rebellion and Suicidal for Life. Such awesome albums!

What's everybody think of Hubardo? So fucking good
I listened to the whole album for the first time while running in the forest and I'm telling you, I don't usually jog for 100 minutes. I just realized when it ended that it's already getting dark. That may be one of the most beautiful things I have ever heard in my life.

Let's just say, there is a reason a healthy chunk of long time Kayo Dot fans are calling it their favourite release yet. I'm still not sold on it being better than Choirs, but it's probably solidly tied for 2nd with Coyote. I will have to give it more time.
Marco ("Polo" over on progarchives) is of the opinion that Hubardo puts bands like Deathspell Omega to shame when it comes to extreme metal

Dunno who that Marco (or these "prog archives") is, but there are some
other artists that put Deathspell Omegas to shame in that field, Kayo
Dot being one of them. Anyway, Choirs is a great album, I love it, but
Hubardo is the only magic lantern that lets me see beyond the horizon...
[/awkward&lofty] yep, I recommend it.

List as of 05.10.2013:
1. Kayo Dot - Hubardo Guys,
seriously, even if you didn't like any previous album from Kayo Dot or
motW, CHECK THIS OUT, it's very different! A gigantic concept album that
bends the rules of space-time continuum (It feels like a 30 minutes of a
breakneck ride through a surreal dream, while in fact it's a 99 minute
long album).
2. Kvelertak - Meir Eclectic, passionate and kicks ass.
3. Cult of Luna - Vertikal Sludge/post-metal with great concept as the main inspiration both lyrics and music-wise.
4. Riverside - Shrine of New Generation Slaves Great and accessible modern prog, as emotional as ever. 5. Fen - Dustwalker Very good stuff, and going without keyboards was an admirable move.
Other albums: Grayceon - Pearl & The End of Days Ov Hollowness - The World Ends Intronaut Habitual Levitations Immolation - Kingdom Of Conspiracy Suffocation - Pinnacle Of Bedlam Kylesa - Ultraviolet Meshuggah - Pitch Black Cloudkicker - Subsume
Waiting for: Oranssi Pazuzu - Valonielu Vaura - The Missing

I've been listening to a few 2013 metal albums this year.
Wrekmeister Harmonies - You've Always Meant So Much To Me
Yodok - Yodok #2 (arguably drone doom done with Tubas)
Lesbian - Forestelevision
Sabazius - The Descent of Man (not that often though...)
Onde Sphrique - Curriculum Mortis
The best thing I've heard this year isn't even metal in the slightest though, it's Dennis Johnson's November, a five hour minimalist piano composition from 1962 in a similar vein to La Monte Young's The Well Tuned Piano. Wonderful stuff.

I havent been too enthalled by what Ive heard so far in 2013, but the last couple of releases that Ive listened to have changed my somewhat lurk warm feelings about 2013.
New Satyricon is a great album
New Carcass is a great album
New Gorguts is a masterpiece to my ears.
All three are almost sure to end up in my top 10 for 2013.
I hope the new Fates Warning will knock my socks off too.

I finally picked up the new Black Sabbath. It's pretty decent, Iommi's riffs are in fine form, and Ozzy's voice doesn't annoy me like it has on the past couple of Ozzy albums.
I have the DGM - Momentum album on the way too. Sounds very good in a Dream Theater/Symphony X kinda way from the couple of videos they have up on youtube.

Well, my list includes Suicidal Tendencies, Carcass, Satan, Sodom, Gama Bomb, Leprous, Warbringer, Hell, Voivod, Alice in Chains, Fates Warning, Violator and Trallery. Also some other stuff that I should best not mention like Volbeat, Steven Wilson, Soilwork, Polkadot Cadaver, Avatarium, Protest the Hero and Mattias IA Eklundh's Freak Guitar.
edit: well, I wrote this first at a pure thrash metal forum. Now, it may make more sense! ;)
Last place in the list (#20) is Trallery. I'd like to say a few words. They got there after one listen, amidst the frenzy of compiling my year-of-the-list inside the deadline. My first impressions were, "wow, this is a mess, style-wise, vocal-wise, all over the place..." But with some damn FINE passages. Like, best of the year stuff. So, I just stuck them at the end. Now, today, after many repeats, that album (Catalepsy, 2013) is among my favorite of the year. Normally it should appeal to any metalhead who loves both thrash and power (ballsy, German speed/power or King Diamond power...) and can handle his Coroner. Look out for three things:
1. The vocals. Many styles. Some jump at you when you least expect it. At some styles he sounds magnificently awesome. At others he sounds like he is struggling, borderline awkward. At all times he has this marvellous, 80s sensibility of going for it, no matter what - a thoroughly convincing metal attitude. Absolutely Spanish accent, blended with mimicking early german thrashers, the result is a delight to my ears. Scored a lot of points for me with each listen.
2. The riffs. Shit, listen to the whole album because there is a wealth of amazing passages throughout the adventurous songwriting. The latter is the point of contention for me. I think they have elements of over-indulgence, unecessary bridges perhaps or whatever. But I really appreciate the freedom of going where the song takes them, it usually works out REALLY well. This is their debut. They are a trio from Spain that started out as a Metallica tribute band. This is a fucking awesome first effort.
3. Odd moments: These include a song which is a power metal "ballad" with hard rock roots - and the obligatory metal bridge; a Coroner tech-thrash fest which worships Grin, switches to Mental Vortex and somewhere in there throws a (very convincing) swedothrash/death passage; the two small instrumentals. Riff-fests, like small overtures of a bag of themes, enough material for three songs; the final epic closer. That epic closer. Reminded me of my first days of falling in love with metal, some VERY exciting stuff happening there. Along with the awkward ones.
Very much recommended.
