Here we go with my first negative thread
but these are always fun
Post what you consider to be the 3 worst metal album covers in history.
Mine are as follows:
I likek what Booboo from PA said if I may quote:
James: Hey guys, I'd like you to meet Andres Serrano, the creator of such masterpieces as "Piss Christ", he's designing our album cover.
Lars: So what is it going to be?
Andres: Well, I'm gonna take some bovine blood...
Lars: Blood? Awesome. That's totally metal. Go on.
Andres: Then I'm gonna mix it with my own semen, and then squish the liquids between two plates of glass and take a picture of it.
Lars: ...
James: BRILLIANT!
No seriously, that's exactly what it is. Why do you think they called it Load?
Hilarious
another
So dark I cant figure it out
Next:
I love th band but this is atrocious!
your turn now

Here's a notoriously bad one: Iron Maiden - Dance Of Death. There's too much going on, and it looks like a first draft. The album title font doesn't look right either. Actually nothing looks right aside from Eddie.

Cover art
The http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Computer_generated_imagery - computer-generated cover art for the album was provided by David Patchett, but he asked to be removed from the credits because he was not satisfied with the result. The version used was actually a prototype provided by Patchett, but the band decided to use it in its incomplete form. Upon close inspection, one can note several of errors: The character on the far right looking out of the picture appears to have a broken neck. The white dog is standing on the snake underneath it. The baby's foot is cutting into the dog and appears more to be suspended in mid-air than sitting on a wolf. The small child character at the front on the left is standing on the other characters foot. The character doing a back-flip on the left of Eddie has a dislocated shoulder, his left hand is also against his right arm instead of on the floor and the back-flipping character's right leg is dislocated. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dance_of_Death_%28album%29#cite_note-0 - [1]

Hehe, yes and guess who started it (and I'm a bit disturbed by the statement "My 1st negitive thread", as
I see PA turning into a "Slam Pit", dont let it happen here).
AtomicCrimsonRush . . . take a bow .
By the way, I disagree with alot of folks there about some of their choices for "Bad" covers
(maybe because I'm a Freelance Artist and studied Art History on my own) .
But here so-far, yup . . . these are pretty bad . There are plenty of "Gore Metal" album covers
that will make your worst nightmares and the movies "Hostel", "The Audition" and "Dead Alive"
seem like episodes of Mister Rogers Neigborhood! The Art "might" be well executed but it will
be totally in Bad Taste (more than the Uriah Heep Cover for "Fallen Angel" at PA, by one of my
fave Fantasy Artists ).
Atomic . . . you should start a "Christian Metal Appreciation Thread", Deliverance is a great Thrash
Band from the old days! (But you may want to stop "casting the 1st stones" ).

As long as I am part of the Admin team, this will NOT happen. I fought long and hard against the spread of negative threads on PA, but after a while I got tired of talking to the wall, so to speak. If people think that the only way to discuss music is by bashing what they don't like, then I'd rather not discuss it altogether. For the time being, the negative threads have been kept to a minimum, and no one has turned sour yet. However, if this becomes a trend, I and the others will try our best to put an end to it

I'm glad Raff
I stepped into another " I HATE DREAM THEATER" thread at PA, and the few poor
guys that just "mentioned" they liked them, they end up getting beat-up
by the peanut gallery (AND I get equally mad at the DT "Holier than Thou" Fans as well) .
I just HOPE that "this" thread is in Fun, and will not get bashed if I said (or anyone) "But I LIKE that cover".
But Raff, how "Explicit" can we get with Album Covers? Metal/"Gore Metal" can be EXTREMELY gross
and shocking, I for one wont put them up, because I think it'll have a dominoe effect (for good or bad).
But a Bad cover is a Bad cover (in taste and/or execution), but its "In the Eye of the Beholder".
. . . i think .

Well, this is a metal site, and we all know how awful some of those covers can be. They are available elsewhere on the site, so it would sound a bit hypocritical on our part (I mean we Admins) to ban their posting here. I believe that it should be up to each individual member's sense of what is appropriate to decide whether it is a good idea to post something that might shock others.

This was not created to slam metal but to have fun withthe silliness of metal and like every genre there are some downright stupid ideas in the music esp the album covers. I like it so far the way pple ave responded but of course this is only a bit of fun and hopefully will remain that way - if not just get rid of the thread - its that easy tho its an eye opener to se some of these albums esp that warrior one - what were they thinking
on the other hand I hate threads that slam bands like Dream Theater - thats just offensive. I noticed a thread here called I hate Slayer and I refuse to post in it at all.

I have to "defend" the Slayer thread though,
At 1st it was just to tell "why" he didnt like them, and it would start a "Discussion"
because they are VERY popular. I like a few albums but their are
alot of bands of that era (imho) that were better musicians, but . . .
Slayer has a sound that I like sometimes. Its that sound-why they are popular.
But the thread got heated, instead of "opinions" it got into a
Bash. Folks have to remember that what they write is "their own
opinion" and NOT "My way or the highway" .

Yes please. No censorship in that regard. Its important that we document and not judge. If the question was about how far youre supposed to go in a thread like this, I say the same, but as Raff suggests the voice of reason might come in handy too . But then again why shouldnt I post a covers like the meat collages by Carcass if I felt they were they ugliest covers in the world? As long as its part of the thread intention I dont see it as a problem. Im going through the death metal sub at the moment ( and probably a few years from now ) and Ive seen my fair share of bestial and quite frankly tasteless cover artwork. Thats also what this site is about though. We represent every genre in metal, also the ones we might not enjoy much ourselves. For instance I found a white supremacy act the other day. That kind of got me bothered but not for a second do I consider censorship. That would more or less ruin the credibility of MMA IMO.

There are quite a few such acts included in the database, and - when I first saw them and their names - I was rather shocked as well. Unfortunately, they exist, and dealing with them is a classic case of 'damned if you do, damned if you don't'. When you have a database which aspires to being as complete as possible, it is almost a duty to include every metal band, even those whose beliefs are abhorrent. I would, however, draw the line to any kind of glorification of the aforementioned beliefs, and I don't think I have to explain why.

Seriously? A shirtless man with an armadillo's head? In front of a stone wall? With a band logo that looks so 90s that you wonder what it ties into this thing on the cover? At least Trilogy by Malmsteen looks epic in a way.

No . . .
its THAT Bad . . .
it reminds me of a few of these:
In my top "5" fave Prog Metal Bands, "Fates Warning" are one of the Fathers of the Genre, but I still
remember a quote in the credits of "No Exit" where it said in the "No Thanks" area :
"For the 1st Album Cover Disaster"
The 1st version:
Yikes! what terrible Fonts/Lettering too!
Then the 2nd:
Uh . . . the woman/witch doesnt looked too phased about being burned at the stake...
After these 2 versions, they yet again, released a version with just a Moon photo and
the FW Logo used for the next 2 albums
Then went back to the original for the Re-Master and created a new Logo (Used on "The Spectre Within"
Re-Master as well). It be interesting to get it and see what they wrote reflecting back on the "Cover" .
Age of Rebellion (AOR).
Heres a really talented Prog Metal Band from Germany, these guys looked like they were right out
of High School but their musicianship was really Professional:
Excellent Album, BAD cover .
Apparantly they have 2 other albums I did not know about! They were somewhere between Dream Theater
and Dali's Dilemma, instead of what you'd think they'd sound like (German -i.e. Vandan Plas or Dreamscape).
And by the way,
These -including The Jordan K. Rush album DO look like a "Talented" 4th Grader or High School Kid drew
them . . .
Because back in Highschool (and 4th Grade) "I" drew like that!
. . . YUCK! what an embarrassing memory .

Well (imo) I think from "Awaken the Guardian" on, they have been very thought provoking .
Hehe, the Annihilator Black Widow album is pretty silly indeed . Have never listened to that album
though.
The "Best Of" album is something that was done (As a Lay-out) for a few Metal Bands, kind of like what
Sony and Elektra do for their Classic Bands.

And the Music is even better .
. . . Have you heard about the Project with Matheos and Arch!? Basically its an album after the release of
the next FW album, its like having "2" FW albums!!! (Same band line-up sans Alder called "Arch/Matheos"
I believe).
Heres some details:
(Via Progulus.com Forum: http://www.progulus.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=568&start=75&sid=79f616e61e83feb995b3fa3ea60c419c" rel="nofollow - http://www.progulus.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=568&start=75&sid=79f616e61e83feb995b3fa3ea60c419c )
new project called Arch/Matheos in the works
joining the two masters: Joey Vera, Bobby Jarzombek amd Frank Aresti!
this is almost as exciting news as the Psychotic Waltz reunion was!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Quote:
1/19/11 - ARCH / MATHEOS Currently Tracking in the Studio
Jim Matheos and John Arch are currently working together on a new
full-length album that will be released in late spring/early summer via
Metal Blade Records. The band, called ARCH / MATHEOS, began tracking
the drums on January 12 and will continue to record through mid
February with both John Arch and Jim Matheos producing the album.
ARCH / MATHEOS features an all-star lineup including the talents of
Joey Vera on bass (Armored Saint, Anthrax, Fates Warning, Seven
Witches), Bobby Jarzombek on drums (Halford, Fates Warning, Sebastian
Bach, Riot), and Frank Aresti on additional lead guitar (Fates
Warning).
More details will be released over the coming months so be sure to stay tuned here at FatesWarning.com and at MetalBlade.com
(from the Fates website)
Forgive everyone! I should have put this in another thread

Someone beat me to Trilogy, so...
This one isn't really THAT strange for the era (And it's actually very good), but I still can't get used to it
This one made me laugh the most, however

Seriously? A shirtless man with an armadillo's head? In front of a stone wall? With a band logo that looks so 90s that you wonder what it ties into this thing on the cover? At least Trilogy by Malmsteen looks epic in a way. |
yes, the cover art is crappy, but the album is quite good, their best work in my opinion.

Number 3: Fallen by Burzum. I'm sorry, Varg, but this doesn't fit your style at all. Especially when put next to your older art.
Number 2: Dissident Alliance by Jag Panzer. I'm not totally sure what's going on in this one.
Number 1: Shitfun by Autopsy. Ewwww!

That list was crap. Not only they failed to mention some monumental classics but they managed to list some awesome album covers in there as well. Bolt Thrower, really? Leprosy? Tankard? FAIL.
Here is a favourite atrocious cover of mine:
More atrocities:
From the top of my head... Also Riot had some terrible covers in their day, early Pantera... ..and I second the Dance of Death cover. Not that X-Factor, Virtual XI or indeed their last one are any masterpieces...

Considering they have a very accomplished artist in the band (Away), that is a rather laughable effort. It's a compilation/rarities album, so I'm not sure they wanted to release it to begin with nevermind with that cover.

Leprous Bilateral is a great album just has a bad album cover
and Black Sabbath's Technical Ecstasy, stupid innuendos
Metallica - Lulu (Need I say why?)
I know this isn't metal, but King Crimson's 'In the court of the crimson king' is probably the worst album cover I've ever seen

--------
Ps: I read that cited the cover of Metallica's Load. The cover of "Load" (Metallica) is a composite photo of bovine blood and semen, entitled "Semen and Blood III", 1990, the artist Andres Serrano. Already the cover of "Reload", created by the same artist, is made up of blood and urine.
