Without thinking too hard, it would look something like this. If I thought a little harder it could look quite different.
Drudkh - Forgotten Legend & Autumn Aurora Paysage d'Hiver - His whole discography Mortuary Drape - Secret Sudaria Trist - Hin-Fort S.V.E.S.T. - Urfaust Burzum - Filosofem Belenos - Notre Amour Eternal Darksapce - Their whole discography Emperor - In the Nightside Eclipse Master's Hammer - Ritual Summoning - Let Mortal Heroes Sing Your Fame Ulver - Bergtatt ..... Nahvalr - Nahvalr
I can write of few more words on any of those if your interested.
Also some recent stuff I've been really enjoying, but have not had enough listening time to have gained status of 'favourites'
Gnaw Their Tongues (numerous albums) & most of the side projects. & Aeternus - Beyond the Wandering Moon

I guess my favorite black metal album, if it even counts as black metal, is Celtic Frost's "Morbid Tales" (incl. "Emperor's Return"). I'd also recommend Immortal's "Battle In the North" and Emperor's "In the Nightside Eclipse", mainly because they're classics and pivotal releases in the Norwegian black metal movement.
I must admit that I've never thought Burzum's stuff was anything special, but I have it from some black metal afficionado friends of mine that "Filosofem" is not that bad (according to them, that's the only good Burzum album).

Ddheimsgard - 666 International and Supervillain Outcast.
I second the Gnaw Their Tongues and related projects recommendation. Really eerie music.
Enslaved ( mostly their latest progressive stuff, but it depends on your choice of poison)
Shining - Halmstad
Drottnar - Welterwerk ( great technical/ progressive black metal)
Deathspell Omega ( from http://www.metalmusicarchives.com/deathspell-omega--si-monvmentvm-reqvires-circvmspice.aspx - Si Monvmentvm Reqvires, Circvmspice onwards)
Funeral Mist ( and the related last couple of albums by Marduk)
Aborym - Generator
Abigor - http://www.metalmusicarchives.com/abigor--time-is-the-sulphur-in-the-veins-of-the-saint.aspx - Time Is the Sulphur in the Veins of the Saint...

So your interested in the ambient/atmospheric side of the equation?
Burzum really is your touch stone guy if your even remotely interested in the Atmospheric/Ambient side of BM, he's someone you should give a shot, at least for historical sake. Tho' I think he is much more than that. His albums Hvis lyset tar oss & Filosofem are my favourites. I'd be inclined to recommend the latter. It's raw, but it is his most fully fledged ambient infused effort. I'd stay away from his recent releases, despite his latest release receiving positive reviews from fans, it's little more than a mediocre effort in light of his earlier works.
Had a quick look at your review to gain a better gauge of your tastes. You might try working backwards with In the Woods... if you've not do so already. HEart of the Ages is an interesting progression in their sound. At this time they were still more BM than the progressive/avant-metal found on their later albums. But their newer sounds is definitely shinning through.
I'll continue further when I have the time...

Good to see another CoF fan - most people seem to simply associate the band with the audience, and disassociate themselves from the audience - which is a very poor reason for dissing a band IMHO.

You can't get an awful lot more old school or rough than Sodom (except Venom, of course). Their early demos are awesome, if you're not one of those who demands superlative production and performance instead of gut feel. I posted some vidz from these demos today; http://www.metalmusicarchives.com/sodom.aspx - http://www.metalmusicarchives.com/sodom.aspx

Of their classic stuff I've only heard Deathcrush and De Mysteriis, and then Ordo Ad Chaos, but somehow nothing of it has ever really impressed me. Pretty much same thing for e.g. Immortal, though I do like one of their albums, but I mostly grew up on Burzum, Darkthrone and Emperor when it comes to these influential 90s bands.
I still haven't given my list of top albums to this topic because it's a pretty hard question. No idea where I would start, except mentioning the obvious ones ("Filosofem", "Transilvanian Hunger", "Hvis Lyset Tar Oss"...)

God, someone remind me never to make lists, I always cringe looking back on them.
7997 you've made me dig up Goatmoon's Death before dishonour. Is this a good thing? Yes. Some brazen shit right here.
Is Ash Pool the guy from Prurient? Cannot remember his name.
Been meaning to check out Branikald for a while now, loved Forest's first album.
cheers

Ash Pool = Prurient = Roman Cross = Devil's Dung = Vegas Martyrs = Cold Cave = whatnot... = Dominick Fernow. Prurient and Roman Cross being my personal favourites from his projects.
Big Branikald, as well as Forest, lover here. The first 7 or so releases (including demos) are top notch at least. Not so familiar with the later releases.
delegger is pure Ildjarn worship but I really like it, I recently got hold of "The End of Tides" and been enjoying it.
Prevalent Resistance has possibly my favourite "musician" (also known from Circle of Ouroborus, Rahu, Vordr, Verivala, Key, Karmic Void etc. = all brilliant!) in it, so that already tells that I revere Prevalent Resistance too.

I'm not a big black metal fan, but i enjoy it at times.
Some of my favorites are Immortal's At The Heart of Winter, I, Ansur's Warring Factions and the latter Enslaved phase.
Immortal's latest isn't half bad also.

Immortal is either worshipped or hated like crazy but they arent as bad or as great as some people say. The lastest album was alright though. Been loving really raw black metal latley and the punkish black metal. Theres quite a bit of nsbm bands ive been into a lot latley but that can really just be mixed in with the raw black metal.

Hate to be this guy..but I personally make a distinction.
Black Metal, to me, is a fairly narrow genre of music. Basically it is the "pure" stuff. While the progressive/folky black metal I label as, well progressive or folk metal.
I really don't like true black metal at all...in fact there are only 2 albums I actually like.
De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas by Mayhem, and Hvis Lyset Tar Oss by Burzum. The latter being my favorite.
That's pretty much it. In terms of "other" black metal I love Bergtatt, Vintersorg's early stuff (and latest), Drudkh and OM by Negura Bunget which is a brilliant album! That's the folky stuff! As for the more progressive BM there's always Enslaved (later of course) and Deathspell Omega.

Folk and Progressive Black Metal isn't as good as the raw bm. Bands like Azhubham Haani, Bilirubin, Ildjarn, Goatmoon, Ives, Vlad Tepes, Karmic Void, Ash Borer, Fell Voices, Roman Cross, Iskra, and Beherit are so much better then Vintersorg, Drudkh, and Negura Bunget.

There are so many more that could be interchangeable with the last two. But at this moment in time, they'd be the last two I'd go with.

A Riitiir fan... I love that one too. Great album that was actually chosen as album of the year 2012 by our collabs here on MMA: http://www.metalmusicarchives.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=5840" rel="nofollow - http://www.metalmusicarchives.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=5840

More importantly, you're a fan of Paysage d'Hiver, Darkspace, and Blut Aus Nord. Best three bands on that list I'd say.

Black metal is probably my favorite genre at the moment, but I'm still relatively new to it since it was the last metal subgenre I learned to appreciate. Would love to have any recs based on my above tastes.

Came across this old topic while browsing so I thought I'd post an update.
Of these from my old post, I'd still rank those Immortal ones pretty highly, in fact most of these I still highly regard. A couple of been knocked down slightly in ratings though. Others that would definitely feature in a list of my favourite black metal releases are:
