RIP

Slayer was the second band, period, I ever heard. I got out of them for a while (when I was a super snobby prog elitist) but in recent years I was able to enjoy much of their work again. Just typing this gives me a nostalgia I can't shake.
Like many, I though Jeff the better of the guitarists and he had some intriguing songwriting.

Christ..... Shocked

I knew he was injured from some kind of spider bite or something, but didn't realize he was doing that poorly.  Thought it only was something that kept him from the guitar/touring/Slayer.

Most shocking bit of music news I've heard in quite some time. Unhappy

The Westboro "Church" should just be ignored. Like trolls, they feed on attention. The best way to kill them off is to not let them provoke us. And, Jeff Hanneman is more important to the world than they are anyway.

Never a truer word said, well done that man!

From the Band ACID REIGN.

The thing about metal is.....

Its an extreme form of music. Not many people get it but those who do it LOVE it. Youll often hear people say that they love music, heavy metal fans dont just love it, they live it. They trek miles to see bands, cross oceans, fly around the world, its more than music its a brotherhood. Metal fans can end up being outcasts and ridiculed for their tastes, that just serves to bring the brotherhood closer together.

So in this extended family bands are the patriarchs, they are the ones responsible for bringing us all together. You grow up with them, you share the best of times and their music helps you through the worst of times. You laugh, you cry, you drink, you head bang, you follow their career and you hope to grow old together.

So when a member of a band dies its like losing a member of that extended family, like losing a part of your childhood because you grew up together and you were still friends. It feels strange to have such strong emotions and a sense of loss for someone you never knew and never met but you feel it all the same. Its potent, it reminds of your own mortality. Things dont feel like theyll ever be the same. You recall the times you shared, the last time you saw them and you meet up with others who feel the same.

Today the brotherhood lost a family member. One of the good guys. Jeff Hanneman. He is survived by his wife Kathy a sister, two brothers and millions of us world wide who will never forget him.

This is sad news.  I listened to Slayer a couple of times back in my more extreme headbanging days but have to say that they were to extreme for my tastes back then.  I will have to pay them a re-visit to see if my opinion has changed it all after exposure to some of the more extreme stuff that has come out since then.
