Grunge is realy a genre thats interest me, so many bands that I want to explore futher but I don't know where to start so much good and creative music (in its time).
I saw this documentary (you have proabably seen it), and their was all this bands that I like the sound of, I only have Soundgardens, Superunknown and Badmotorfinger ( I know, i'm slow), but many of the bands have somting interesting, bands like Alice In Chains, Tad, Pearl Jam and Melvins interest me, but their is just something amazing about grunge which I can't understand.... WHAT IS IT.

Grunge.... I've always wondered whether it's really a pseudo-genre. I think that a lot of the bands that are classified as grunge are musically very different, the genre-defining features lying in the image and, perhaps, attitude (and I think maybe that it was, or is, the attitude that appeals to people).
Anyway, I'm not a big fan of grunge (I don't dislike it, though), but being young in the 90s, I was exposed to it quite extensively (especially since the school I went to was this sort of alternative rock kid school where a lot of people were into alt. rock, grunge rock, alt. metal, extreme metal and the like), and I do like Nirvana's "Nevermind", although I don't like their other albums, and the Danish grunge act Boghandle.

well, I think it's sort of a mixture of metal and punk atitude metal guitar riffs and heavyness with punk bussiness and in your face sort of behaviour. and a Subcultur in the outpost of US (mainy Seatle and Washington State) but many of the "grunge" bands actualy were Alternative Metal bands, like Soundgarden whom is said to be he first Alternative Metal, Sludge, and Stoner metal band.

I think it's interesting how it completely took over the rock scene and virtually killed off hair metal overnight. I think that there were more factors at play though, but grunge really changed the rock scene into something more "earthy" but also more "shoegazing".

Yeah, and it also refers to the musicians not moving about on stage very much - but maybe this applies more to Brit pop than grunge.

funny, I just reviewed Dirt a few minutes ago.
I personally am a huge fan of grunge, always have been. If you are interested in the main albums, here they are:
from Alice In Chains:
Dirt
Jar Of Flies
same title
From Nirvana:
Nevermind
In Utero
Bleach
from Pearl Jam:
Ten
Vs.
Vitalogy
No Code
Looks like you're fine with Soundgarden.
from Silverchair:
Frogstomp
Freak Show
From Screaming Trees:
Sweet Oblivion
Dust (even though I don't have it)
also, check the albums by Temple Of The Dog and by Mother Love Bone.
If you're interested in grunge's very first acts, check the bands Green River or Mudhoney

Grunge (and bands I associate with it, like RHCP and RATM and Neil Young ) is part of the reason why I returned to the rock world in the early 90's.
That Grunge movement was refreshing at the time when all there waswere disgusting electronic beat-driven pop (>> I was not into these power metal and Thrash Metal stuff) and 92 a banner music year for me... I had not yet discovered the prog renewal.... and I wonder if I would've at all if I hadn't listened to grunge bands
My fave: early Pearl Jam

I had my hands full exploring metal and finding a way into prog music at the time, so the grunge movement didn't do much to me. I think I was actually more interested in the alt. rock wave that followed the grunge movement (or which, I guess, the grunge movement was just a part of) without ever abandoning metal.
They say that grunge killed metal, but isn't it really the case that people were getting fed up with glam metal, which was the commercially most successful type of metal at the time, so, when an aternative (pun intended) appears, people were naturally drawn in that direction.
There were a bunch of alt. rock Danish bands that surfaced in the 90s who, had they been from Seattle, may have been considered grunge.

ohh, and Black Hole Sun by Soundgarden is so special, a Timeless song the guitar riff in the verse is so adictive. one of the best songs ever made IMO.

I'm OK with grunge, but I think post-grunge is one of the worst subgenres to ever exist. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_post-grunge_bands - Just look at these bands. I would shocked if their combined discographies contained even a single tolerable moment.

I agree with Timesig that grunge is a kind of pseudo genre. For example I dont agree with the fact that many consider Alice in Chains a grunge act. One of my favorites from those times though.

Silverchair
NON-GRUNGE BANDS WHICH YOU MAY LIKE IF YOU LIKE GRUNGE AS THEY HAVE SOME GRUNGY ELEMENTS...
Jane's Addiction (they do have some grungy tendancies)
Rage Against The Machine (angsty and political...can't go wrong there)
Pixies (after all, Kurt did say he wanted to be one of them...)
Radiohead (up till OK Computer they are sufficiently distorted and depressive)
Jeff Buckley (the louder stuff mostly)
Jerry Cantrell (obviously because of AIC)

Tons of bands I dislike on that list, but I'm a fan of both The Presidents of The United States of America and Silverchair. I grew up on the first 2 Presidents albums and the first 3 Silverchair albums.
Young Modern is a cool pop/rock album by Silverchair. There are parts to it that even remind me of mid 70s Genesis.

To be honest I never get the 'Grunge style', like you already said before, so many bands in so many different styles and influences putted on the same ground, I mean, it's quite weird.
The good thing is, they really brought some air fresh to 90's music, and to Rock itself. Like punk did back, long time ago with Progressive, for example, kicking some butts and bringing new sounds to the previous rock we all know.
And bands like Alice In Chains, Nirvana, Pearl Jam and Soundgarden (just tomention the really known ones) are classics, like a Black Sabbath or Iron Maiden (I think you can understand me ).
For me the band that really caught my attention's Alice In Chains, profound, sad, heavy, melancholic all together. And thumbs up for Pearl Jam, for keep their music live all through this years, their last 2 albuns are really good Rock albuns (Backspacer and Pearl Jam).
Sorry if I moved out a little bit of the initial purpose

Backspacer was a really nice surprise to me, I wasn't expecting a good record
But I like, for example, Riot Act, an album most don't like, so I shouldn't be so surprised :)

Here's a good discussion I think, what do you guys think about Them Crooked Vultures? I mean, I like the record, but it didn't let that 'I want more' taste. In the end I tried to listen a second time, but didn't get thru the entire album, and I really like Dave Grohl's stuff!

I don't have the album but they literly were cooking live, John Paul Jones was amazing to se live, almost touching finally he gets the spotlight he deservs, Dave Grohl was like a living avalanche on the drums he did not miss one puinch and every litle fill was godsend.
Josh Homme sang realy greate I like hes voice, calm and warm and powerfull. hes guitarplaying is also powerfull.

I guess this is an appropriate spot to ask this.
I'm currently listening to Ten by Pearl Jam. It's the only album I've heard of theirs. I'm not even sure if I can remember hearing a song of theirs not on Ten (probably have though).
What are some other great songs or albums by Pearl Jam?
Posted By: rushfan4

VS is a good album. The first 3 songs are probably the best known: Go, Animal, and Daughter. Dissident and Elderly Woman Behind the Counter are both good songs too. I haven't listened to it in awhile, so there are probably others, but those are the ones that I remember.

Speaking of Pearl Jam, I got to ask something too (sorry, heh!). Svarti Loghin (black metuhhl) is said to use Pearl Jam -like vocals on the newest album, here's a clip:
I'm just interested as a total outsider to grunge / Pearl Jam, that are the Pearl Jam influences how clear? It would be interesting to hear a comment from someone who is not so much into black metal like other people I've seen talking about this album. This is nothing important, just something I'm curious about, heh.

Vitalogy has Spin The Black Circle, Tremor Christ, Nothingman, and Corduroy.
I have most of the rest of their albums and there are some pretty good songs scattered throughout but I haven't listened to them in quite awhile so can't really recommend anything specific. Binaural was pretty good, and actually I really enjoyed Backspacer when it came out. I listened to it a number of times, but not recently. Hmmm.. sounds like my next listen should be Backspacer.

a realy good song I must say, and yes it sounds like a Pearl Jam song and the singer sounds like Eddie Vedder so yes.
I like Black Metal but not all its to gloomy for me and what i have heard lacks a litle neuance, I am more of the kinde who like the more comercial black metal, symphonic and black metal crossed over to death metal,
Dimmu Borgir is rudimentary band and Puritania are on of the greatest metal songs ever.
Vreid is cool, Gorgoroth are okey, nice live, but im not huge fan

The guitar playing resembles Pearl Jam. The clean vocals at the beginning do remind me of Eddie Vedder in early Pearl Jam. The ones at the end reminded me more of Temple of the Dog, which was also a project that Eddie sang on.

I have three Pearl Jam albums: Ten (a masterpiece), Yield (which I also like a lot), and Riot Act (somewhat disappointing). Personally, I think Ten is way better than Nevermind, but I know many people would disagree with me.
Posted By: Pekka

I own Ten, VS, Binaural, Pearl Jam and Backspacer. Ten is quite brilliant, VS great in places but as a whole somewhat unsatisfying (Go and Rearviewmirror are my favourites). I've listened to Binaural only a couple of times and haven't really gotten anything from it, but the self titled is a really good rock album. Strong material with no big downhills or uphills. Backspacer was a massive surprise, and a positive one. Good straight ahead rocking, a couple of really beautiful songs (influenced by Eddie Vedder's soundtrack to the movie Into the Wild, I guess) and some calmer rockers, all in perfect balance on an album of perfect length.
Ranking at the moment:
1. Backspacer
2. Ten
3. Pearl Jam
4. VS
5. Binaural

I have a lot of Pearl Jam albuns, and if you like a list (at least my list), my top5:
1-Vs (1993)
2-Ten (1991)
3-Pearl Jam (2006)
4-Riot Act (2002)
5-Backspacer (2009) [not because is the 'worst' of all 5, but because I'm getting used to it]

Yeah! a Pearl Jam discussion! I have all thier albums so far except for the new extended version of Ten that came out last year. Here's my top five...
1. Ten.
2. Vs.
3. Binaural.
4. Backspacer
5. Riot Act
My least favourite is No Code, the songs on it are amazing but the production quality is absolutely dire, even by grunge standards.
