Now, the topic title is bullshit, post any anime you found good even if it's kawai to the limits.
I'll start with a "metalhead" title though, whatever that means. Claymore, a very good anime about half-demon women fighting full-blown demons and other monstrosities. Gory and full of swordplay, I recommend.

I much prefer reading manga to anime but I do enjoy watching some. My personal favorites are Clannad, Clannad: Afterstory, and Elfen Lied. I starting watching Attack on Titan recently too and that one is a pretty enjoyable action anime.

Nice! I don't like comic books (in general) so manga is not my cup of tea either. But anime is a different story. I've just finished Claymore today, it was good but a bit tiresome at times (you know, "I... I have to... I have to kill... I have to kill..." something like ten times per episode. But it is full of great dark fantasy themes and some emotional touches.
And yeah, Elfen Lied is quite intense, I liked it. As far those a bit more ambitious/untypical titles are concerned, I recommend Steins;Gate. It's considered by many to be the best anime series ever created. And I'm telling you, they may be right. I love it, it's really mindblowing. Starts relatively slow but gets more intense with every episode.
Haven't watched other 3 series you've mentioned, but I've heard Clannad is very good. I'll check it out.

I've watched a bit of Claymore a while back, I enjoyed what I seem but I couldn't get super into it. I'd probably like the manga a lot more haha.
Definitely watch Clannad and Clannad: Afterstory, shit gets emotional man. As for Attack on Titan, it's a pretty solid series that's been getting lots of praise and I agree with it for the most part.
I'll check out Steins Gate when I get the chance, thanks for the rec.

Wolf's Rain is one of my favourite series ! I like mecha in general, but I could never really get into Evangelion for some reason. Watched Code Geass a month or so ago and it was awesome, one of the best mainstream anime for sure. Also Rahxephon and Gargantia on the Verdourous Planet are good mecha series.

I'd recommend Berserk and Gantz....the former is pretty well-grounded in reality w/ good political intrigue and swordplay....though once you get to the last episodes it throws a curve ball at you and things get REALLY f*cked up! 'Quite entertaining I'd say...though if you want to continue after that you'll have to read the manga because they didn't go as far with the anime as they did with the manga...as Gantz, well....I'm not sure how to explain. It's DEFINITELY unique though, basically about a group of people who are teleported some some place and are ordered to kill certain "Aliens" if they want to keep alive(or something like that, idk, my memory's a little shoddy!). In any case it is definitely a worthwhile watch, certainly unique IMO. One other show I like is Gurren Lagann....it's a bit overblown like some of the lighter hearted animes out there but it's definitely unique for what it is though, it's basically a mech anime where people try to fight against a certain tyrannical...you know I can't think anymore, my mind is shot, lol just check' em out, you shan't regret(hopefully)!

The last anime I watched (1 month ago more or less) was Baccano! and it was excellent. It is about immortals and fights between different Mafia families. Perhaps the chronology is a bit confusing at first, but the development of the story is great.

I think that is due to many of them have very good plots. You know, I really don't remember why I started watching anime. I believe I was searching for good series on the Internet, and then 'Death Note' appeared in a recommendation list. I watched it and I loved it.
However, there are several things I don't like about anime such as generic personalities, girls with huge eyes or boobs, stupid and non-sense stories That's why I choose very carefully which anime to watch. I don't enjoy wasting my time...
Btw, 'Monster' is an awesome anime too.

I think there's a lot of anime fans just like you (me included). I don't really watch that much anyway but I still think anime "industry" is much healthier in general than western live-action movie/tv industry. Even though there's a lot of crappy anime, there's also a lot of very ambitious and intriguing ones, produced every year. I think Japanese people are bolder when it comes to controversial/philosophical themes and they somehow succeed at combining them with accessibility (the most recent example for me is Attack on Titan, hyped as hell all around the globe). Something that Hollywood doesn't even try to do anymore with their brainless blockbusters (except maybe movies like Inception, both extremely popular and ambitious).
I agree on the problems you mentioned, but again, there's a significant number of animes that managed to avoid or at least reduce their presence (Steins;Gate and Code Geass are good examples of character driven anime)
Also, the reason I watch anime is that... it's animated. I generally don't like live-action movies that much because you can literally turn off your imagination - you have everything on the screen: real people, real places. With anime, however, your imagination still has to process what you see and to me it's amazing.
I'm not an expert on anime but based on my limited experience I can recommend:

I've watched only 2 episodes so far but this anime was really hyped and I know more or less what are the key elements of it. An over the top, absurd and intense ride it is, but it also turns out to be an interesting social commentary. It's basically about a girl on a quest to find the one responsible for her father's death. She's travelling with a half of giant red scissors. She ends up in an academy where students status is determined by the class of their uniform. The uniforms give them superhuman abilities... Okay, I give up, I can't describe it, just watch an episode, you may like it... for more than one reason

Yeah, they're mecha animes. When I was a kid I'd watch a lot of Robotech... I mean it's jet fighters that can transform into giant robots and they were battling giant aliens with all sorts of colorful hair; things couldn't be more awesome than that.

I've finished Kill la Kill a couple of days ago. It's been getting better with every episode and I ended up loving it. Great and unique series and a clever, tongue-in cheek cultural commentary too. As far as I know it was the second most hyped anime of 2013, along with Attack on Titan. I feel tempted to say I liked KLK better, but they're very different so it wouldn't make sense.

An unnamed soul who has passed on is given a "second chance" at life in the body of a 14 year old boy who has recently committed suicide. It's kind of a drama but, obviously with some supernatural elements. While the subtext is dark, the tone is surprisingly light, or, rather, bittersweet. Based on a Japanese novel of the same name.

I guess the anime must be quite different from the manga, given the fact it was published in 1989 or something like that. Still, you can easily tell that the plot differs from the contemporary trends - more focused on character development and less on cheap tricks playing on viewer's emotions. [MILD SPOILER] The final twist with Tamiya Ryouko was my favorite part so far. Very classy.[/MILD SPOILER]

So, I've finished the show and I must say I'm not completely sold on it. On one hand it has a good premise and classy plot, on the other hand, it's tad too moralizing (a trait many anime hold). Still I liked the unexpected outcomes of some of the protagonist's dilemmas and the more seinen than shounen approach to storytelling. Generally a very good show with some problems.
I'm not sure what to watch next. I usually get tired of anime quite fast and need several months before I start watching again. Oh alright, I still haven't finished Texhnolyze.

It started off rocky, but now I'm getting into it. The art is obviously amazing. But it was distracting at first and didn't seem to be trying to create any sort of mood or unified aesthetic. The dialogue seemed contrived at first, too. But once the pacing started to slow down, everything fell into place. It should have started with a better exposition of the characters. But I think the creators didn't want you to grow tired of them. Still, it's taken some time for me to grow any sort of attachment to them, because they didn't develop them that well in the first two arcs. Really, it seems like the entire show tries very hard not to be boring, maybe in order to compensate for the long dialogue sequences.
I don't know about the theme music for every new arc. I'd have rather the electrifying intro to the first episode be the main one. It would have set the mood better. But I guess this has its own charm too.

Well, it's amazing how first impressions differ and I'm glad you're willing to look past some things that do not necessarily work for you For my part, the exposition was elliptical but therefore intriguing - the fact that we got to know the characters only by the way they engaged into social interactions, made me curious about the cause of their idiosyncrasies.
To me, the structure of this anime is very postmodern in a way many writers (like Murakami) structure their books. Not just formally, though, but also in the way its magical-realism story is handled.
Posted By: Polymorphia
Date Posted: 27 Dec 2015 at 6:35pm
I'd agree, but, at least from my experience, Murakami actually provides a ton of character exposition before progressing too far into the plot. That said, he does write in novel form. It's interesting to see that kind of form adapted to anime. I can't say I wasn't intrigued from the beginning, either. Just mostly from an intellectual standpoint and not from an aesthetic one, at first.
I definitely haven't seen anything like it. It does remind me a little bit of Tatami Galaxy (the dense dialogue, the magical realism, and the sexy minimalist visuals, though Tatami is much less serious) and Mushishi (the reliance on Japanese mythology and a protag with hair covering one of his eyes solving problems related to spirits of some sort).

I had several, several problems with it.
I didn't know this going in, but I'm pretty sure it's the writer's take on a fan service anime. It isn't just that there is lots of fan service; it's that there are entire episodes devoted to fan service with nothing regarding the plot whatsoever. The long dialogue sequences are used for humor and fan service instead of mystery and character development. The dialogue was clever enough that I didn't get bored while watching it, but the aimlessness was frustrating. The two episodes in each arc that actually had anything to do with the plot I liked, but elsewhere it felt like the series was just a long filler episode.
Secondly, there are several things in the series that are just morally not okay. Araragi's character is lecherous, pedophilic, and incestuous. He routinely fondles Hachikuji, almost has sex with his sister after arousing her by brushing her teeth (which, along with its setup, takes up an entire episode), kisses his other sister and grabs her breasts. Then complains that their complaining about it could be heard and "taken the wrong way." There is no character development to make sense of this and seems to be utterly for the sake of cheap thrills.
I could see how the writer, as the writer of a "smart" show, was going for kind of a Tarantino-esque parody/celebration of a "low brow" style. But, in my opinion, not only was it badly executed, it just wasn't a good move to attach that concept onto a pre-existing story. It only managed to be a very skip-worthy series. You could watch the last couple of episodes in each arc and get the gist of the plot. Otherwise, it feels more like an OVA Special than an actual installment of the series.
I watched the prequel Nekomonogatari (Black) as well. There were still some bothersome remnants of Nisemonogatari's style, but it was better. There were some writing issues I had, namely that the dramatic dialogue sequences made little sense and the way they solved the problem was a bit contrived. It was mostly information relayed more effectively in Bakemonogatari anyway, but its worth watching, I suppose. There are some scenes that are very good, though its not as good as Bake. It felt like what they were trying to do with this was accomplished in the first part of Monogatari Series Second Season, Nekomonogatari (White).
Neko White was absolutely fantastic. They really stepped up their game on this one. They finally really pulled off Hanekawa's character (though the last arc of Bake did a decent job of it) and the visuals are better than ever. It's %100 worth watching. Solid character development, foreshadowing, not oversimplified yet logically coherent dialogue.

Woah, your argumentation is very solid. Having read this, I'm actually glad I didn't watch Nisemonogatari. I'll give MSSS a go some time, though, sounds very promising.
Posted By: Polymorphia
Date Posted: 12 Jan 2016 at 12:42pm
I liked MSSS a whole lot. It does build on the characters introduced in Nisemonogatari quite well, so I might watch the last two or three episodes in each arc on that one, just to become familiar with the characters. The ending movie is quite an experience too. It takes the style of the show way further and is beautifully directed, though I'd like for the ending to have been longer so that the drama could really reach its peak. But all and all, I loved this second season, and am eager to get into the next three series.

I recently watched Lupin III: The Castle of Cagliostro from 1979. I really enjoyed it, and it's very different from your typical Hayao Miyazaki movie. Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed a great deal of his films when I was young, but they more or less had a similar style to them. This early film from him however is much more fast-paced and humorous. It certainly has a slap-stick sense of humor, and I always seem to like anti-hero characters like Lupin.
I found that there was an anime series of Lupin III that aired in the late 70's/80's directed by Miyazaki. I'm thinking of giving it a try, has anyone here seen it and if so know if it's any good?

^I haven't seen the series, but I do like the movie. Some of Miyazaki's stronger, better paced, more consistent writing, if not as visionary as his later films.

Recently finished the first season of Mob Psycho 100, I loved it and already can't wait for the second season. It has great characters, great and quite often humorous animation, and a gripping plot. It's by the same guy who made One Punch Man, which I've only seen the first episode. I'm planning on working through the first season of One Punch Man next.

It's been a long time since I watched anime series, but I plan on watching 'Kokkoku', 'Ito Junji: Collection' and 'Steins;Gate 0' this month.
