This thread's aim is to tell about your current musical obsessions: what band or album has been in very active rotation lately, and why? Would indeed be great if everyone wrote something about the band or album, not only pasting an album cover or something like that.
Right now I'm obsessed with Verge, been many weeks now. The band managed to create something really captivating on the album "Hatemagic". I posted http://www.metalmusicarchives.com/hatemagic--review.aspx?id=219889 - a review of it, although it's definitely not my best review because it's hard to tell about so good albums. The bad thing is that I still haven't got a real copy of it, although I ordered it in May - a lazy seller...
An example track of its sweetness. Also a great example how to use synths well in black metal - and guitar solos!

Well Ive been into Danish death metal act Panzerchrist a lot in the last couple of months: http://www.metalmusicarchives.com/panzerchrist.aspx?ac=panzerchri - http://www.metalmusicarchives.com/panzerchrist.aspx?ac=panzerchri I wouldnt exactly call it an obsession, but they are a new discovery to me. Ive known about their existence for many years but never gave them a listen. Ive worked my way through their full discography and reviewed all their albums in the process ( some reviews are not posted yet. They are part of my backlog. I try not to spam the frontpage everyday).
Soul Collector ( their third album): http://www.metalmusicarchives.com/panzerchrist--soul-collector.aspx - http://www.metalmusicarchives.com/panzerchrist--soul-collector.aspx is of particular interest to me.
Brutal yet catchy death metal with german war themed lyrics. Its a dark and malicious sounding death metal album. My review will reflect my affection for it. Unfortunately the album is out of print, but youll be able to listen to it if you purchase the Bello compilation album where the full album is included: http://www.metalmusicarchives.com/panzerchrist--bello-room-service-soul-collector%28compilation%29.aspx - http://www.metalmusicarchives.com/panzerchrist--bello-room-service-soul-collector(compilation).aspx

I do have a tendency to get really stuck on one band for a while. For like a month I could not stop listening to Megadeth. Last week or so I have been obsessed with Opeth. Reason being I bought a few of their albums which I have never heard before, so am really getting into it all.

Lately Iron Maiden's been almost all I listen to. When I was on vacation a week ago, I listened to Powerslave, The Number of The Beast, Piece of Mind, and Seventh Son almost nonstop. I was really into them a few years ago, but since I've taken on the challenge of reviewing their entire discography, I've rediscovered how great they are. This is just one of the reasons why I love reviewing.
I've also (no surprise here) been really into Pain of Salvation. For the past 2 years or so Daniel Gildenlw's creation has been on very heavy rotation, something that no other band can claim. They're simply my favorite band in any genre. Lately I've been rediscovering Scarsick. I used to really hate that album when I first heard it, but within the past few months it's grown on me to a point where I can call it a masterpiece.
Lastly, I've been getting into Morbid Angel in the past few months, and I now own all of their studio albums except for Blessed Are the Sick and Formulas Fatal To Flesh. Really great U.S. death metal.
Of more obscure acts, The Last Things' sole album Circles & Butterflies has been in my CD player a lot lately. I absolutely dig their old school prog metal sound, and it's really a shame they only released one album. Oh well...

I don't really have a current band obsession. My obsession has been to listen to all of my albums/CDs/downloads by bands in alphabetical order. I find that it is the only way that I can be certain to listen to everything that I have. It has been a long, long process and I am currently listening to all of my Steve Hackett CDs, which would make for a discussion on PA. Sammy Hagar is on the horizon however, so that is a bit more MMA related.

I've been listening to some Maiden this week as I realized I have a few of their albums that I never ripped to my computer.
Besides this, I've just been jumping around listening to random albums in my collection. I'm trying to listen to stuff I've been neglecting.

I remember the last time I cleaned the bathroom I had Angel Dust playing in the background. I like the 2 albums they did without Jim Martin as well. I'm not to fond of the early FNM sound. Some of it is catchy but I don't like Chuck's vocals.

^Morningrise was a huge step up from Orchid, which is the only Opeth album I haven't been able to really get into. Still it might be their second weakest despite its greatness, says something about the quality of the band
Stooge wrote:

Yep. I've forgotten to review Introduce Yourself, should do that some day. It's quite much the same sound as The Real Thing, with little less melody and with an at times painful vocal delivery. I've also got We Care a Lot on vinyl, but I just haven't been able to buy myself a player to listen to it with

lately Ive been discovering the Danish death metal band Illdisposed ( http://www.metalmusicarchives.com/illdisposed.aspx?ac=illdis - http://www.metalmusicarchives.com/illdisposed.aspx?ac=illdis ) and written a bunch of reviews ( not posted yet). Its another one of the Danish acts that I never really gave much of a chance back in the nineties. I remember listening to their debut, but its only recently that Ive listened to anything else by them. I wouldnt call it an obsession though, as I find much of their material to be way too standard. Especially their later output where they flirt a bit too much with melodeath, arent to my taste.
I saw them live a couple of months ago and thats where you should see them. They kick ass on stage.

Swallow the Sun is brilliant Four albums, an EP and not one weak track so far. They are a bit stuck in their pattern, but still produce quality stuff. Barren Earth is a recommended band to check out if you enjoy Swallow the Sun, Mikko Kotamki sings/growls for them too.

Mikko Kotamki is also involved in Alghazanth and Verivala (among others) which are my favourite projects of his - black metal, yes, so I won't suggest those bands for everyone, but for those into the genre (Alghazanth being more symphonic and almost progressive, Verivala old school), recommended. :-)

In Flames are one of those bands for which the term "guilty pleasure" was invented. Good or not, the songs (particularly the later ones) are catchy as hell, and they can burrow quite deep in one's mind. I don't say it often, but I like In Flames.

I lost my interest in In Flames after Reroute to Remain came out, but the one time a year that I revisit Colony and Clayman are always enjoyable. I don't think I've heard a single song after Reroute. Should review the albums the next time I listen to them.

The most brilliant musical experiences happen in such environments, IMO - I can't underestimate the feeling when listening to atmospheric, fitting music in the midst of nature. A couple years ago I did that on almost daily basis, no matter if it's -20C (except that I already broke one ipod in that use) or rainy or whatever, heh. Now it's reduced to maybe once every two weeks. Happy to live in the middle of forests and lakes, so to speak.
And Agalloch indeed works very well in such environment. ;-)

A little forest begins from this house's backyard already. Haven't used that place for musical pleasures though, just played a lot there as a child. I tend to go farther from home when listening to music, also a nice exercise since I don't do any jogging, as some of my trips might take a couple of hours. Going to miss the silence here when I move to a bigger city next summer probably.

That's about the same case for me! The most atmospheric thing I'll get in suburban Philadelphia is a highway or townhomes.

Been really into Key recently, the band that has appeared in at least two threads here already, heh... Simple neofolk/pop and most importantly: sloppy, honest playing! These guys can't really sing properly and the acoustic guitar is sometimes terribly out of tune, but that all adds to the charm, not to forget the lo-fi production = perfect for my ears! I don't know if something is wrong with me when I enjoy things that aren't "right" at all. Also, really intricate artwork both in the full-length CD booklet and the handcrafted wooden box indluding three tapes. Magical stuff! My current obsession is ice hockey and NHL 09 for PC, very little space for music there

Call of duty
But in musical terms, I've been listening to a lot of different stuff lately, but not one specific band.

I know the NHL 2K series on XBox allows for custom soundtracks . Too bad EA Sports didn't allow for this, but it is the superior game.

I went through a phase of being completely addicted to NWoBHM - especially the really obscure stuff, where there's tons of hidden gems on the B-sides and in the murky depths of those demo cassettes.
Now I've exhausted my list and added everything I know of to the archives, I'm suddenly struck with an obsession for listening to the really obscure hard rock bands from the late 1960s - early 1970s that pioneered the metal sound - or proto metal.

Gojira. I've been listening to them a lot lately. Their combination of progressive, death and trash metal results in incredibly unique sound. From Mars to Sirius, their 3rd album is amazing. I haven't heard their last one yet though.

My current obsession is folk metal, in particular Skyclad.

I have quite a few Skyclad albums. I havent listened to them in years though. I think I have the first six albums. I especially have fond memories of "Prince of the Poverty Line".
