Necrophagia was one of the first death metal bands, assembled in 1983.

Early days:

Necrophagia was a popular group in the underground "tape trading" scene of the early-to-mid-1980s. Featuring hard-driving metal and growling vocals, Necrophagia became a pioneer in the fledgling death metal genre. Their first full-length album, Season of the Dead, was recorded and released in 1987.

With Phil Anselmo:

The band then split up due to musical differences, and lay dormant until 1997 when frontman Killjoy reformed the band with then-Pantera frontman Phil Anselmo on guitar, Wayne Fabra on drums and Jared Faulk on bass (later succeeded by Dustin Havnen). This lineup released the album Holocausto de la Morte and the EP Black Blood Vomitorium.

Gorelord mainman Frediablo was then added as second guitarist, and Opal Enthroned (real name: Stephanie Windstein) joined the band on keyboards. This lineup released the Cannibal Holocaust EP before spliting up.

NECROPHAGIA Goblins Be Thine

UMUR
"Goblins Be Thine" is an EP release by US death metal act Necrophagia. The EP was released through Red Stream, Inc. in 2004. It bridges the gap between the band´s third and fourth full-length studio albums "The Divine Art of Torture" (2003) and "Harvest Ritual, Volume 1" (2005). The sextet lineup who recorded "The Divine Art of Torture" (2003) is intact on "Goblins Be Thine". Therefore Necrophagia still make use of the keyboards services of Mirai Kawashima from Sigh...

...I mention this specifically because Kawashima´s involvement on "Goblins Be Thine" is dominant. At times almost to a point where you are in doubt if this is a death metal influenced Sigh release. The italian progressive horror soundtrack rock act Goblin is also a valid reference, and maybe the title of the EP is indeed an ode to them. Necrophagia is of course still the brainchild of lead vocalist/founding- and only remaining original member Killjoy and the core old school brutal thrash/early death metal sound is still intact. So are the horror/gore themed lyrics and imagery, which are only enhanced by horror movie samples and Kawashima´s horror- and classical music themed keyboards and synths ("The Fog" for example builds on John Carpenter's theme from the 1980 movie of the same title). The death metal foundation of the music is pretty simple and mostly slow-to mid-paced, and the band only very rarely speed the music up. This is all about putrid gore/horror atmosphere and raw filthy riffs and rhythms. Killjoy´s growling vocals are quite the treat on this EP, as he gargles, snarls, and croaks his way through the songs. There´s a caustic bite to his performance that not all extreme metal vocalists are able to deliver.

"Goblins Be Thine" features a sound production, which is perfect for the material, and it´s overall an incredibly well sounding release. The balance between sounding filthy and raw, and still being able to hear all details in the mix is hit perfect here. While "Goblins Be Thine" at it´s core is trademark Necrophagia, Kawashima´s dominant influence on the music still makes this EP a standout release in the band´s discography. Some may find the keyboards/synths a bit B-horror movie cheesy/campy, but to my ears they are quite brilliant (I´m a huge fan of the epic classical keyboards/synths on "To Sleep With the Dead". A theme culled from the 1987 horror movie "Nekromantik"). Featuring 6 tracks and a total playing time of 31:54 minutes, "Goblins Be Thine" also features enough quantity to warrant a purchase, and when that quantity is loaded with quality a 4 star (80%) rating is deserved.

NECROPHAGIA Ready For Death

UMUR
"Ready for Death" is an archival album release by US death metal act Necrophagia. The album was recorded in January 1986 but was shelved until Embalming Records got a hold of the master tapes and released an unofficial bootleg version of the album in 1990. The first official release of the material featured on "Ready for Death" was as part of the 2000 "A Legacy of Horror, Gore and Sickness" compilation album (November 2000, Baphomet Records). It was however not until 2020 that "Ready for Death" saw an official individual album release through Dismal Fate Records and a reissue in 2021 through Xtreem Music.

Necrophagia´s official debut full-length studio album "Season of the Dead" from February 1987 is already counted among the seminal death metal releases (although it´s still in many ways a thrash metal release), so the fact that Necrophagia had recorded a death metal album already a year before the release of "Season of the Dead", is quite the revelation.

In terms of death metal credibility I´ll give it to Necrophagia that although some of the riffs on the album are still thrash metal oriented, they do take things in a more brutal and death metallic direction than many of their contemporaries, and "Ready for Death" should arguably be counted among the very first death metal full-length studio albums in history.

When it comes to the quality of the music it´s another story though, as this sounds pretty amaturish and badly produced compared to other early proto-death/early death metal recordings by artists like Possessed, Xecutioner, Morbid Angel, and Death. This sounds like a demo recorded by a bunch of teenagers not really ready to release a full-length studio album yet, and as it is history made sure a release was prevented. A 2.5 star (50%) rating is warranted.

NECROPHAGIA Cannibal Holocaust

UMUR
"Cannibal Holocaust" is an EP release by US death metal act Necrophagia. The EP was released through Season of Mist in October 2001. It´s the successor to the "Black Blood Vomitorium" from 2000 and it´s the last Necrophagia recording to feature Phil Anselmo (working under the Anton Crowley pseudonym). For this specific recording Anselmo hired his then wife Opal Enthroned (real name: Stephanie Opal Weinstein) on keyboards. The remaining members from the last EP (other than Anselmo) are band founder/lead vocalist Killjoy and drummer Wayne "Doobie" Fabra. New in the lineup (other than Opal Enthroned) are guitarist Frediablo and bassist Jared Faulk.

The introduction of keyboards to Necrophagia´s music does not have the impact that it would have when Mirai Kawashima joined on synths/keyboards in 2002. This still sounds like the last couple of Necrophagia releases with Anselmo in the lineup. So this is decent quality old school death metal with horror themed lyrics but nothing more. The quality of the recordings is even a bit up an down as both "Burning Moon Sickness" and "It Lives in the Woods" appear here in what sounds like demo sound quality (unpolished performances and all), which is a bit odd as the opening title track is clearly a professional studio recording. It´s especially odd to include "It Lives in the Woods" here in demo quality as it had already appeared on the "Black Blood Vomitorium" EP in studio sound quality. But when that is said these raw demo recordings are actually pretty great.

The last two tracks on the EP is the eerie atmospheric drone/noise track "Baphomet Rise" and a raw and savage cover of "Chainsaw Lust" by Mayhem, which Necrophagia recorded in 1999 as a tribute to Euronymous. None of those tracks are particularly interesting or worth the price of admission. So upon conclusion "Cannibal Holocaust" isn´t the greatest EP release by Necrophagia and if you´re interested in purchasing one of their EPs I´d much rather recommend "Black Blood Vomitorium" or even better "Goblins Be Thine". The latter which features the 2002-2005 incarnation of Necrophagia, who recorded some of the band´s best recordings. A 2.5 - 3 star (55%) rating is warranted.

NECROPHAGIA Black Blood Vomitorium

UMUR
"Black Blood Vomitorium" is an EP release by US death metal act Necrophagia. The EP was released through Red Stream Inc. in February 2000. It´s the follow-up release to Necrophagia´s 1998 comeback "Holocausto de la morte" album and it features the same quartet lineup who recorded the preceding album release. This is however the last release by this incarnation of Necrophagia (which among others included Phil Anselmo on guitars, (working under the Anton Crowley pseudonym). A slightly different lineup would record the "Cannibal Holocaust" EP in 2001.

Stylistically the 4 tracks on the 15:49 minutes long EP are not surprisingly pretty similar in style to the material found on "Holocausto de la morte". It´s old school death metal which is primal, savage, and pretty simple and easy to follow. It´s horror themed and there´s a campy quality to the atmosphere, which I´m sure is what the band were aiming for.

While "Black Blood Vomitorium" feature a raw and relatively well sounding production job, the performances are decent, and the songwriting alright, the EP is quality wise a run-of-the-mill type old school death metal release. The next incarnation of Necrophagia would release much more interesting music. A 3 star (60%) rating is warranted.

NECROPHAGIA Slit Wrists and Casket Rot

UMUR
"Slit Wrists and Casket Rot" is a live album by US death metal act Necrophagia. The album was released through Red Stream, Inc. in June 2006. It´s a limited edition live album recorded on the "Harvesting the Dead" tour supporting Necrophagia´s April 2005 "Harvest Ritual (Volume I)" album. The original version of the live album also included a bonus CD-rom clip for "Blood Freak". "Slit Wrists and Casket Rot" is the culmination of the 2002-2005 lineup, which slowly disintegrated after the departure of guitarist Frediablo in September 2005.

A fitting end to one of the most stabile lineups in Necrophagia´s history. A lineup who recorded two full-length studio albums, one EP, and released this live album. The tracklist, maybe a bit surprisingly only features tracks from Necrophagia´s 1998 comeback album "Holocausto de la morte" onwards and not a single track from their legendary 1987 "Season of the Dead" debut album, but of course Mirai Kawashima´s horror themed synths/keyboards are also better utilized on the contemporary material. It´s definitely a conscious choice as the band probably knew that questions would be asked when leaving out material from "Season of the Dead".

I´m not sure about this but it sounds like the album was recorded at one show. You don´t really hear the audience but lead vocalist Killjoy talks to them a few times during the show. The musicianship is tight and the performances are on a high level (both the instrumental and the vocal performances). The sound quality is decent, although it´s a bit thin and lacks some heavy bottom. It´s not a lo-fi recording though, just a bit rough around the edges. A 3 star (60%) rating is warranted.
