Savage Circus was given birth in 2004 by ex-Blind Guardian Drummer Thomen Stauch on drums, Jens Carlsson on vocals and Emil Norberg and Piet Sielck on guitars. This line-up recorded the first album “Dreamland Manor” which was released in September 2005 with tremendous worldwide success.

In 2006 Thomen Stauch had to pass on the drumsticks for the entire year to Mr. Thomas Nack due to health problems. Thomas played all live shows and was also filmed with the band at the Prog Power Festival USA, Atlanta and became part of their first live DVD “Live In Atlanta”.

From the very first show in Japan Yenz Leonhardt played the bassguitar. After returning to the drums in March 2007 for a tour with Circle II Circle Thomen became more and more unstable again which resulted in a lot of last minute live show cancellations. After giving Thomen a whole year to sort out

With Thomen Stauch's past in Blind Guardian, it's no surprise that his power metal project Savage Circus should draw comparisons to the other band. Actually, I find this album a hell of a lot more fun than anything Blind Guardian have done for years. As fun as Blind Guardian's symphonic influences are, sometimes you want your Dungeons & Dragons metal to just keep it simple, and Savage Circus accomplishes that, opting for aggression and intensity over complexity and sophistication. It might be a little dependent on the Blind Guardian sound, but that doesn't mean the album is a pointless imitation of Thomen's old band: rather, you can see it as Thomen and his bandmates taking a chance to explore a musical direction which Blind Guardian themselves opted against. Fun for power metal fans, though if you aren't particularly excited by the Blind Guardian school of the subgenre it might lose its charm quickly.
