"Mythological Deviance" is the debut full-length studio album by French death metal act Splice. The album was self-released in March 2013 and made digitally available as a "Name Your Price" download option. Splice were known under the Syphilis monicker in the years between 2009 and 2011 before changing their name and released one album under that monicker, so "Mythological Deviance" is as such not their first album.
...and I think that´s audible, because these guys (and girl. The drummer is a girl) deliver their death metal with conviction, skill and passion. Their take on the genre is actually pretty interesting as they manage to combine brutal blasting death metal with both more melodic tinged sections and a couple of atmospheric ones too. The vocals are pretty one-dimensionally growling and compared to how intriguing the rest of the music is, they are pretty standard for the genre. When lead vocalist Fuch tries his hand at some shouting type chanting vocals in "Uku Pacha Rising" it´s a nice variation and I hope Fuch will continue experimenting more with the vocals, because the outcome in this particular case is to my ears rather successful.
The sound production is powerful and suits the music well. I especially enjoy the drum sound, which has a nice organic quality to it. Splice has overall created quite an interesting and powerful death metal release in "Mythological Deviance". It´s not like they are wildly original, but on the other hand I can´t mention a direct reference and that´s always a sign that an artist has found a sound, that´s at least a bit different from the norm and that´s always admirable. I hear lots of potential here, and I´d definitely be interested to hear where the band take their music in the future. A 3.5 - 4 star (75%) rating is deserved.
