Just using the words "traditional" and "progressive" together will seem like an oxymoron for some people, but all I mean by that is your standard "Dream Theater/Fates Warning" bands. Not just the rip-offs, but bands who play in that general style of mixing classic prog rock with traditional metal or power metal. A lot of people are probably tired of this, but I'm just now really delving past the obvious bands and hoping to find some more gems. I'll list as many as I can find or think of to get started, including the obvious.

Here's a few more suggestions:
Riverside from Poland. My favourite prog/metal band and one of the best bands from the last 10 years IMO:
Shadow Gallery. One of the more consistent prog/metal bands of the last 10 years:
Pagan's Mind from Norway. Not yet in our archives I noticed. I'll be changing that very quickly. Here's a couple tracks from thier best album Celestial Entrance:
Another great band from Norway, Conception:
Canadian guitar hero Dave Martone. Instrumental prog/metal, jazz fusion. Technical wizardry:
Another Canadian instrumental band with only one album from 2000:
And one more technical instrumental band, Canvas Solaris:

@Certif1ed: LEGEND! Incredible band!! I was really into a whole murky, barbarian, progressive, proto-metal thing recently too, but Manilla Road, Cirith Ungol and Brocas Helm were about as far as I got. Damn, I'm seriously blown away by this.
Nightsun is pretty great too. Kind of a Deep Purple/MC5/Black Sabbath-by-way-of-RIO sound. Really interesting band! @UMUR: Heaven's cry is a really sweet band! I hadn't heard of them. Great suggestions, all! |

Oops, took to long with that last post.
@Colt: Thanks, that's a bunch of bands! @Cannon: I'm liking Pagan's Mind already. Hadn't heard them before either. |

I plugged the band in the search function and nothing came back. Saves me some work.

Yeah its really too bad they are kind of obscure. I really like their sound. Not too accessible, which is something I prefer.

If you dont know Psychotic Waltz yet Id suggest taking a listen to this song. One of my alltime favorites. Psychadelic tinged progressive metal
I guess my review of Into the Everflow speaks for itself: http://www.metalmusicarchives.com/into-the-everflow--review.aspx?id=214268. I am completely madly in love with this album and have been for almost 20 years. Edited by UMUR - 16 Jun 2011 at 4:54am |

Psychotic Waltz is one of those bands I've heard a little, but never quite known what to do with. I probably should spend some time on them.

If you want an easy introduction to Psychotic Waltz Id take a listen to the "Bleeding" album. Its my least favorite album by the band but it probably makes for a good introduction. The most interesting albums by Psychotic Waltz are the two first IMO.

Sonic Pulsar, kind of traditional prog metal I guess, some ambient influence here though. Two songs from each album.

Some suggestions from me (perhaps they've already been mentioned, in which case I apologize - also not all of them fit the "traditional" progressive metal label):
Control Denied Anubis Gate Third Eye Cynic Coheed and Cambria Symphony X James Labrie Mekong Delta Antithesis Vigilante JT Bruce White Walls Shift Sun Caged Communic Thine Anguish Adagio Silent Memorial Firecracker Hunted No Gravity Twinspirits Zero Illusions Exhibition Tunnelvision Royal Hunt Touchstone The Cheeky Girls |
