So everybody here has probably read dozens of 'Top 50 albums ever,' 'Top 100 records you must hear before you die' sort of lists, in magazines, blogs, sites etc

Are there any albums held up to a mythic status that you just don't get all the fuss about ?

My Choices are:
Napalm Death - Scum.      - I am a gigantic Napalm Death fan, but this record is just not good in my ears. I used to get upset by people who went on about how great scum was and had never even heard of their other albums, it reinforced the undeserving, gimmick based popularity of what I saw as a dreadful album. I've since grown out of that, but the album doesn't ever sound as good in my ears as the likes of Harmony Corruption or Enemy Of The Music Business.

Sepultura - Roots.      - It is just a bit dull, incohesive and missing some special spark, as far as I can hear.

Rush - Moving Pictures.    - Just when compared to the four before it, why is this one supposedly so much better ? This album I actually do like a lot, just don't understand its status.

NIN - The Downward Spiral   - I prefer everything after it.

Kiss - Destroyer - Just a bit weaker and cheesier than the three ones before it and the two after it. Why is this the big one ?

Exodus - Bonded By Blood  - Great title track, but weakish album. Balof charming but not as good a singer as Zetro or Dukes in my opinion.

Carcass - Heartwork (yep this one has never done the trick for me. I always get 2 or 3 tracks into the album and then start getting severely bored by the cold and clinical production and Jeffs tame and monotone sneer. Wheres the passion from Necroticism? An album I personally view as one of the best death metal albums out there). I understand the importance of the album and I wouldnt rate it low, but I dont enjoy it.

Gorguts - Obscura and From Wisdom to Hate.  The fact that Obscura gets almost unanimous praise really annoys me.  I think it's nothing more than technical w**kery with sub-par production.  From Wisdom to Hate is the same situation, better production.

Nargaroth - Geliebte des Regens.  There is a holdout of Nargaroth fans, and a large number of them love this album.  I would do the same if it wasn't so...boring!

Haken - Aquarius.  It's like they took the boring bits from Dream Theater's Scenes From a Memory (a weak album imo) and made tried to make it sound complicated and shit.

Dream Theater - Scenes From a Memory.  I'd actually like this album a bit more if "Through Her Eyes", "One Last Time", and "The Spirit Carries On" didn't exist.  Those songs make up the majority of the boring bits of album.

Pantera - everything after Cowboys From Hell.  It's all boring to me.  Dimebag isn't as great as people are giving him credit for.  Phil Anselmo's lyrics and delivery makes him sound like something of a w**gger (though he could be much worse).  Vinnie Paul is probably the worst of the bunch, but that's mostly due to him destroying what bits of credibility he had left by playing in bands like Damageplan or Hellyeah.

Elvenking - The Scythe (it's had some panning from their fanbase, but it was apparently their best selling album so...)

Dream Theater - Awake (I don't hate it, but I don't get its general high regard).

Sepultura - Roots (one of the worst albums I've ever heard).

Napalm Death - Scum (I appreciate the ambitious and groundbreaking attitude of the release, but I fail to find very many musically redeeming aspects to the album)

Cannibal Corpse - Eaten Back to Life & Butchered at Birth (I'm not too familiar with their whole discography, but both of these albums strike me as just decent; nothing more, nothing less)

One I was thinking about lately, but haven't reviewed yet: Somewhere In Time by Iron Maiden.  I don't exactly hate the album, but I find it rather bland, especially compared to all the albums before it.  The clean, synth-soaked sound is interesting, but I prefer my Maiden a bit more raw sounding.

"Somewhere in Time" is my favorite album of all time. Actually, I'm having a hard time with this exercise... I just can't think of a popular metal album that I don't like (there probably are some, but they don't come to mind).

Yeah I actually found it a bit hard too Kim. It doesnt really make sense to bring up obscure albums no one knows about, and most famous albums are famous for a reason. At least to most people.

Operation Mindcrime I'm not a huge fan of.  I agree it's Queensryche's best, but still not saying a whole lot.

Master of Puppets is also something that I don't think I'll ever appreciate as much as the next metal head.  It's okay.

Nevermind...I'll never understand why it gets so much praise.  Something in the Way is probably the only track I can say I really like off that album.  In Utero is a much better album, and even so, In Utero isn't all that good.

I actually think that the title track is weaker than the rest of the album.

Maybe it's handier to see a top 100 album list or something?

But I think the newer albums of Death are a good example for me. And Opeth. Progressive stuff in general actually haha.

I'm pretty much in the same boat with everyone here. Although I will say that the hardest thing in this thread was go through some of the answers without screaming "WHAT??? BLASPHEMY! KILL HIM WITH FIRE!!!".

But as far as weird tastes go, I'll say I prefer Lethal's Programmed (which has been labelled - a bit too much imo - as a Queensryche clone) higher than any Queensryche album. I also prefer Tom Mallicoat (who was labelled a Tate clone because of this album) over Tate. So there!

Sepultura - Arise. I think it's not that great. Thesame goes for Beneath The Remains and Chaos Ad and Roots.
Schizophrenia is the album where it's at I think.

And there used to be a time where I thought Pantera was cool. I still enjoy it from time to time, but in general... It's too cheesy for my taste.

Cowboys From Hell, by Pantera - very boring to me.
Nevermind, by Nirvana - good... when I were a teenager. Nowadays, for me is trash like all the Nirvana releases.
Empire, by Queenryche - Boring...
Fear of The Dark, by Iron Maiden - I love most of discog of Maiden, but for me Fear of The Dark is overrated. I prefer the prog side of Maiden...Wink
Roots, by Sepultura - Sepultura is excellent, I like most of their discography, including the awesome Dante XXI. But ROOTS???? Die, Nu Metal, DIE!Angry

I haven't listened to the album since around the time it came out, but I wasn't nearly as blown away by that one as most people were.  It was probably still a good album since Devin's work is usually consistently pleasing, so I'll have to revisit that album some day.

It's been years since I've felt the urge to listen to Pantera.

Honestly, the only album by this band that I've found interesting so far is Winter Wake.  I think The Scythe is on the same level as their first two albums.

Yes, for me, Pantera was ever an overrated band...
