These two bands started as metal bands (with gothic and doom elements) and always experimented and changed their sound (which I always found interesting to listen to).
So which of them satisfies you more? |

Very tough choice, they've indeed been steadily evolving with every release and both of their 2012 albums made into my top 5 list. In my heart, though, I feel like Anathema earns my vote, while at the same time, I've yet to explore another half of The Gathering's discography.

I prefer the death metal era of Anathema, without being a real fan or anything.
I only really like The Mandylion and Nighttime Birds by the Gathering but I *really* like those and I am in love with Anneke's voice. I could listen to their non-metal albums just for her. Which I have. Not my cup of tea but this thread reminds me to revisit them. Definitely The Gathering. |
