Many people on RYM voted up progressive metal on Ayreon's The Dream Sequencer as well, which is intentionally not a metal release (you couldn't even call it heavy rock yet alone metal). This sort of thing is unfortunately quite common.

You want to know the worst one I ever heard? Someone who thought black metal meant metal played by black people.
