First of all being a long time member of Progarchives i was wondering when someone was going to take the excellent format and apply it to other genres (or wait till every band gets included on PA). My question though is where does the "Epic Metal" genre (Manowar ect...) fit into the categories set up? Discuss...

I've never heard the term Epic Metal. Manowar is in Traditional HM and Power Metal, which are both pretty "epic." Any sub-genre of metal can be epic.

I've heard of several different permutations of genre names, but can't recall seeing "epic metal" being used as a genre name. Epic is something I see applying to individual songs. There are power metal epics, death metal epics, black metal epics, etc.

It seems to me that the epic type of metal normally is subsumed by power metal and symphonic metal - at least those are the genres that tend to most towards epic tunes. Of course, if we think in terms of song length, then we find epic metal all across the board.

I'm quite positive I've heard the term somewhere, though I have never seen it used as regularly as the definition 'Power Metal'. Personally, I'd avoid a fragmentation of subgenres, at least for the time being - it is a slippery slope, and has a lot of divisive potential.

Epic metal isn't really a genre. I can see it being used as a genre in the early days of power metal. But now we have power metal, which is a better and more popular term.

Well Epic Metal really doesn't exist. Metal can be epic, but most bands who ever get labelled "Epic Metal" would probably fit under Power Metal, Symphonic Metal, Folk Metal or Heavy Metal.

Epic metal, just an all encompassing term for power and folk metal that one of my mates used.

I think what i meant as "Epic Metal" was the other definitions of epic:
Manowar is all about heros and warriors and how to live your life like one. Virgin Steele is like that as well. They are not Power metal but a separate genre called Epic metal in the sense that their music and lyrics are modeled after the style and content of an epic poem. Most of these bands (strangely) come out of New York and New Jersey. Themes are more Conan the barbarian, Greek or Roman legends and the "warrior" metal brotherhood. Very different than Folk Metal, symphonic metal or Power metal. Ironically the Bio on the band Medieval Steel from MMA calls them: "Medieval Steel are an American epic metal band " Edited by reality - 11 May 2010 at 2:54pm |

it's like asking "where is PIRATE metal" which is nothing more than power metal with lyrics dealing with pirates.
