oh thats also why I put this thread here in the metal lounge, instead of in the genre appreciation section, cause i don't see it as a subgenre.

I would only consider them to be Islamic/Buddhist/Shinto/Confucian/Communist Metal if they had overt Islamic/Buddhist/Shinto/Confucsion/Communist lyrics and imagery present in their music. And calling a band "Christian Metal" or "Islamic Metal", etc aren't actually legitimate musical genres, they are just used as descriptions more or less.

I mean, theres Christian bands within black metal, death metal, metalcore, deathcore, hard rock, heavy metal, glam metal, and on and on.

Yeah, I agree. I just wonder why people need to call them Christian bands then. Just seems superfluous or discriminatory in a way--and let me say I don't think you were doing that at all, obviously.

With Christian Rock, the reason people seek out those bands is for their lyrics, and that creates a distinction for a large number of bands, which to me means a genre in this case.

Moar amazing stuff. Enter Mortification.

I think they were the first Christian Death metal band, formed in the late 80's, and released their first album in 90 or 91.

Yeah Theocracy are pretty great. Like if Dream Theater were a Power Metal band, which can only be a good thing in my book.

I'm quite a fan of Seventh Angel, who mixed thrash and doom metal to create a nice individual sound. A couple of tunes here from their second album, "Lament for the Weary":

A bit of a lost gem of the British thrash scene.

Mystic  http://www.metalmusicarchives.com/mystic.aspx, an experimental metal band were recently added here. If you check the websites etc the music is overtly Christianity inspired. No preaching though.

I guess my view on the Christian Metal tag is that it's a useful collective for those seeking specific Christian themes or praise music. It's not useful as a musical sub-genre, and neither should it be applied to bands of Christians, as opposed to Christian bands. It's all in the lyrics  guess (unless the band is an instrumental one of course!). A good example of this might be a little obscure outfit called Black Sabbath were the lyrics are supernaturalist, at least half of the band members (first two incarnations at least) are practicing Christians, but you wouldn't call the Sabs a Christian metal band (even with a track like After Forever and all of those crucifixes).

Divinefire's another, I think. Then there's Rob Rock's solo stuff.
