I haven't had a chance to review as much yet, but I already reviewed several albums at over 8.5/10 on my site, which is the minimum to get a 4.5* on MMA's system.
I have to say though that of the few albums I came into this year hyped about, a couple, though still exceptional works, didn't make the 5* zone that the group's in question's last couple of releases made (I'm talking about Pharaoh and Epica here, though in Epica's case I would have reviewed higher had the production not sounded like it were recorded in a tin can or something). Hysterica's album met all expectations for me, though I've disappointed by some of the negative reaction I've seen it get in some corners of the internet. Debating with Arjen Lucassen's album is ultimately a 4.5 or a 5.0 though. First disc would be 5.0 without hesitation, second may drag my score down a tier though. Probably wasn't the best idea releasing leftovers and covers as part of the main album. Right now, I'm most hyped about Huntress' debut which is out in just over a week. I don't usually buy albums without sampling most of it these days, but the two tracks I've been able to hear from this so far were enough for me to pre-order it. I'm expecting at least a 4.5 from it. So far Xandria remains at the top of my still small 2012 list. 17 albums reviewed so far:

Today, I checked out the debut album by an Austrian black metal act Locus Neminis. Pretty awesome. They sound like a mix between Darkspace, Lunar Aurora, and Immortal. Just misses a top tier ranking.
This is the best song: |

Borknagar's new album completely blew me away: excellent songwriting, great performances by all of the musicians, especially for ICS Vortex. Also, this band really shook me as extremely innovating.

I posted about it in the death metal kill zone, maybe you haven't checked that lately? I heard a track from it today anyway. Vocals sound a little different but the track was really good IMO.

No, actually, I haven't. I must have skipped over it or something. Regardless, I'm really psyched to listen to that album. I didn't think that they'd come out with another one so soon. |

Based on the track I've heard (which you can find under the videos bit of their MMA page) it's going to be just as good if not better than Inundate.
In other DM related news, I'm also quite hyped for the new Nile album. Edited by adg211288 - 23 May 2012 at 2:44pm |

Whoa!
Never heard of those guys but now I have and will be looking into their albums, REALLY killer stuff! Heres the new release . . . Thanks guys! Also, a Band from Italy that I have be-friended on Face Book and had them send their stuff to Progulus.com, some Math Metal w/a bit of Meshuggah sprinkled with Watchtower for good measure called Memento Waltz with their debut EP "Antithesis of Time" one of my faves so-far for 2012: Edited by MAVIIIVAM - 23 May 2012 at 6:52pm |

So far, I haven't found any 4.5 or 5 star albums yet this year, but it's not even halfway done yet, so I'll see what this year brings me.

So has the Isis ft. Chino Moreno project announced anything yet? That would definitely be on my radar for this year, unless it gets pushed into 2013.

Phantom Anitchrist leaked, I gave it a listen last night, I was surprised at how good it was. The 4,5 of 2012 for me.

I've been really behind on hearing new releases, but I did hear this gem:
Ne Obliviscaris - Portal of I Lyrics are kind of cheesy, but how the vocals and instruments sound are amazing, along with the compositions.

Their demo was promising and since all three tracks from the demo are also included on this debut album its no wonder the quality is high. Overall this is not really music I would put on unless I hadnt received a promo (which I have), but its mostly because of the clean vocals which I dont appreciate. I had hoped he had either stopped singing or tried a different style, but I guess that was not to be.

The Asphyx album is pretty good and, yeah, "Utilitarian", too, of course!

^Yeah both are great albums. My favorite so far from the above is the new Meshuggah followed by Utilitarian and Pneuma by Hail Spirit Noir. The Agruss album also made quite an impression.
