I was looking for Savatage for a review I'm planning on writing but, when I didn't see them under Progressive Metal, I checked Thrash Metal, and having seen no trace of them there either, proceded to look them up in the alphabetical S section. They are listed in Power Metal, which I think is very inaccurate.

I think they should be traditional heavy metal or progressive metal. Definitely not thrash, and probably not power metal.
Great, highly underrated band. Streets: A Rock Opera is one of my all time favorite albums! |

That's true. But keep in mind, many of the listings are changed from PA on MMA. I think that it would be a bit of a stretch to call Savatage full-blown prog metal, but they would fit much better there than in power metal. I would only consider a few Savatage albums as progressive metal, but all of their albums fit in the heavy metal label. -Jeff |

I guess you're the expert when it comes to Progressive Metal, so I'll leave the decision up to you.
In any case, they're not Power Metal.
My favorite album of their's is either Hall of the Mountain King or Gutter Ballet, can't decide. Edited by NJCat_11 - 28 Mar 2010 at 12:34pm |

Well I always thought of Savatage as a US power metal/ heavy metal act so I actually think they fit very well in the power metal sub. As I understand the idea for MMA ( look at this thread: http://www.metalmusicarchives.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=122) is that each album will be tagged. Which means that some Savatage albums will be tagged both progressive metal, Traditional Heavy Metal and Power metal while some might not have the progressive metal tag. Pretty interesting and quite different from the way PA works.

Being biased, I'd only identify "Fight For The Rock" as power metal

I really hope this tagging system is going to be more organized than Last.FM

I have heard only two of their albums, which I have reviewed. Those are Hail of the Mountain King and Edge of Thorns. Both regarded as prog-metal by some people.
As I say in my reviews, only power metal to me. Not that being prog-metal is better than being power metal. But definitely, it's not prog-metal at all. For me.

either Trad Heavy Metal or Prog Metal should be fine, but maybe judging by their later release, Prog Metal should be more appropriate :)

This one of the borderline bands between Prog, Power and Trad metal for me. One or another category is good, for me.

Is it possible that some of their early stuff is Trad. HM and later PROG METAL & POWER METAL ?

^Exactly. The first two albums are traditional heavy metal IMO, Im not too sure where I would put Fight for the Rock ( maybe traditional too) but both Mountain King and Gutter Ballet are usually called US power metal. I havent heard Streets but its sometimes refered to as progressive metal? I would tag both Edge of Thorns and Handful of Rain as US Power metal while Dead Winter Dead should probably be tagged progressive metal. Im not familiar with The Wake and Poets and Madmen.
Savatage is not usually labelled progressive metal in metal communities and if you ask me they should probably be in prog-related more than in the full progressive metal catagory on PA ( hence some of the confusion here Im sure). So I say most of their albums shouldnt be tagged progressive metal here on MMA. Just my opinion

Let's use the UMUR suggestions here and start with that.
Further discussions/reviews will help re-tag (if necessary) Ok for you The T 666 ? Need help doing that ? ![]() |

I think having them included in both traditional heavy metal, power metal and progressive metal ( which will happen if we tag them as suggested above) is valid and more importantly gives them exposure to fans of all three kinds of music.
