Who is the better metal musician, Dave Mustaine or Chuck Schuldiner? Both are vocalists and take a rhythm/lead guitar role and are the sole composers for a large chunk of their respective bands songs. Both also carved their own niche in their genres of metal, Mustaine in thrash metal and Schuldiner in death metal/progressive metal.

My snap response would have been to say Dave. But, thats not right.
While I really never cared for Death or Chuck's singing, I cannot deny his impact on an entire genre of music. Countless metal bands and whole discographies of music would not exist without his influence. And that is too big to ignore easily. Dave gets knocked for his singing, too. I get that. His nasal snarl is unique (and to some, a deal-breaker) but I will give him credit for actually improving a little as a singer over the years. Something even Hetfield can't stick a feather in his cap for. I give props to Mustaine for being more talented as a guitarist than Chuck, but not by a whole bunch. Dave has also been influential, but possibly not to the fevered degree as Chuck, and has obviously, for not being dead, a larger body of work to judge. I know its kind of a cop-out, but it really feels pretty even. I voted it a tie.

Without a clear cut winner as far as talent goes, I had to fault Chuck for his weaker songwriting abilities. Almost every single Death song follows the same formula:
Intro riffs Short verse Pre-chorus that is, for some reason always longer than the verse Chorus Solo Another short verse Repeat Pre-chorus Repeat Chorus The thing that irks me the most is that the amount of lyrical content leads me to believe that Chuck also lacked lyric writing abilities. Almost all Death songs have verses that are way too short and pre-choruses that are way too long. The only two songs I can think of that don't follow the formula are "Crystal Mountain" and "Perennial Quest"; incidentally, these are the best songs by them. Not even in Megadeth's most well known songs have I seen that kind of formula. Dave wins.

A good case and I agree. The formulaic song structure of Deaths songs also irk me at times.

Chuck Schuldiner. Though, I'm getting tired of hearing his name how important he was for death metal etc etc. But that's how it goes when someone dies I suppose.
Chuck Schuldiner has been more influential I think in his genre.

I don't know Chuck enough to say. The only Death albums I've heard are Scream Bloody Gore, Sound Of Perseverance and Symbolic.
Have never been in the mood to get into them properly either, I know they're very good... but I can't be bothered. |

Interesting analysis of the Death songwriting above, maybe that's why I get bored halfway into each Death album. Sure Dave for me. |

But Dave loves Jesus and believes in voodoo. Some of his interviews are hillarious. Edited by Woutjinho - 14 Nov 2011 at 5:53am |

Holy hell...this is borderline impossible for me.
Guess I need to say I love both, they are 2 of my absolute favorite guitarists and both are immensely skilled and great songwriters. I can't even compare vocal styles since they are just too different. Chuck's was obvious fitting for his music, and Dave was obviously not very good at all but again, wouldn't really fly in death metal. I'm also disregarding lyrics since I do not give a flying fuck about them, (though I'd have to give the nod to Dave) Wow, I'm giving my vote to Dave by just a hair. It's his composition skills that gives him the nod. Even there it's just a hair difference and I must say Chuck improved vastly over time. Though still, can't disagree with willytank...a tad formulaic and that's why I give Dave the nod. Even Dave had some patterns though: verse, small solo, verse, small solo, verse, different verse, epic back and forth soloing. It's very evident on "Kill Em All" the Metllica album with most Dave influence and quite different from their rest... |

All I can say is this....
(I looked at the tabs once, the real wild riff...considering the speed it's played at I almost fainted) |
